Well I did search before I wrote and I did not find an answer, soooo here we go
I like the stock 17" rims on my 03 Z71 AV and want a wider tire, Mich Pilot LTX, what is the max width tire I can use without rubbing, ???changing rims or lifting my AV?????

I'm wondering the same question. First, we have to worry about rim width. The factory 17s are 7.5". That will hold up to a 285/70/17 and some, not many, but some 33x12.50s. Look at some sites with the specs for the tires (Tirerack.com, Goodyear, etc.) and they show the needed rim widths, section width, and o.d.

From what I hear 285/70/17 should fit, especially with the torsion bars cranked up some, using the stock keys. I lifted my front end that way 1 1/8 in.

If you are looking for a mud tire, GY make the Wrangler MT in a 275/70/17. That will fit.

Does anyone else have any idea about the 285/70/17s?
