Mechanic Says The AV Gives Him Fits

I didn't witness him say this myself because I was at school but a mechanic told my dad that he loves the Avalanche and if he could afford one, he would buy one. He says that the problem for him from a mechanic's prospective is that making repairs for the AV are a lot of work and they cost a lot of money under warranty. I guess he's had some real bad maintenance stories with the AV to say that. He says that any significant damage to the side compartments costs $1000 to repair .

You may recall that we have had trouble getting our tailgate shut. That problem seems to have an end in the near future. They parked an '03 AV next to ours and swapped panel 3's to test it. With the '03 panel on our AV, it shut very nicely.

We now have another panel 3 on order which adds emphasis to this subject. My dad says that it will cost them $700 invoice to order it so he jumped on it, one because we have scratches on the current one, two, he doesn't want to run into problems after 36K miles.

I am not sure what color this panel will be. It surely wouldn't be color-coordinated if it was for an '03 . It will be delivered in 7-10 days.

So I guess the AV is more expensive than we think it is, even though my dad and I don't believe this mechanic entirely. This mechanic must deal with his fair share of Avalanches that need costly repairs. I hope nothing gets too expensive in the long run. I am confident that our AV will hold together quite well over the years though (y).

Don't let one mechanic's remarks get you down. These trucks are the best on the road. Take a look at Big-Red Z71 after he rolled it. The truck held together like you can't believe.......

He was probably motivating your dad to say "Heck...I'm going to sell this thing before it's gets expensive"...so he could turn around and make him an offer himself.. ;D

I can't imagine the Av..would be anymore expensive in the repair dept. than any other vehicle its size.....Suburban...maybe....

:B: :B:
At $65-$85 per hour labor charges ANY repair on any vehicle is expensive. Who remembers when plugging a flat tire was $3.00? You have to go with the state of the economy and reality. If the Av came out in 1970 it would have raised eyebrows at $8000.............

As a Technician I can say they are not really any more expensive than any other vehicle of their type (like there is one) i.e. Suburbans, Escalades and Tahoes. While our shop rate is 85 per hour - expensive is relative. I make a good living but I am not getting rich. By the way plugging a tire is not an acceptable repair anymore and to patch a tire and rebalance we charge 17.00 total - still a bargain with the cost of a new tire these days. ;) JMHO ;D

The man is right in many regards....since I've had my Av I've gotten 2 flat tires on the goodyear's.....2 different tires...when I took it to the local Goodyear...they were very adement..about how they don't plug anymore...so be it... :B:

With 2L miles on my Av, I got a flat and had to replace the entire tire at $160 - OUCH!

I'm thinking the 2002 Av may cost a little more to repair right now because it is a first year model and has a lot more moveable features such as midgate, panels, side storage compartments, etc.

When I had to get a new tire put on my AV, it was the TECHS that worried me.

First they come out and ask where the tire iron and stuff is so they can change it out, and I politely replied "It's in the right side of the bed in the storage bin, you'll have to unlock it with the key I gave ya'll".

10 minutes later he comes back out and says "Ma'am, we can't find the storage bin, can you come show us?"

I'll tell ya what, I got nervous when he said "Man, I've never worked on one of these before"..........my first thought was "Get AWAY from my truck!"

But they got it fixed and haven't had any problems with it. (y)

Funny thing is ...I had the same problem not with the tire irons etc...but with the jack....I couldn't find it at first...but then realized it was secured into the rear seats on the passenger sides....very stealth...very nice.... (y) :B:
