Midgate Split

I searched and only found a few hits on a 60/40 split midgate mod...but no "real" action on it. Has anyone taken this to a fruitful stage? Recently there were 3 of us on-board, and we needed to get a 6' x 25" curio cabinet in out of the rain to make the trip back home - 180 miles - & I wasn't going to play the "tarp" game. Had to go back the following weekend for the damned thing instead. A 60/40 midgate is really the only thing I've found lacking in virtually the best vehicle I've ever owned! (The Vette is fun, but once ya get past the toothbrush...well, let's just say the AV 's a tuff act ta follow!) Thanx!

I've only seen folks talking about buying a midgate on Ebay. I don't think anyone has done it either

most of the threads are in the future forum as I WISH THE AVY HAD A SPLIT MIDGATE.....

And most seem to think sealing for leaks would be a heck of a problem......I do not know of anyone who is trying....

HTH good luck

Another member (MSDINSP)was bidding on a midgate off of EBay. He indicated that he was going to attempt a mid-gate split. I was a gentleman and decided not to bid against him, even though I had free shipping (via Conway to the Savannah GTG). The gate went to him for $61.
I was going to do the mid-gate pass-thru mod that I have been planning, but I didn't want to spoil a fellow club members modding fun.
I'll try to get the next one that comes up.
Thanks

Rob

I was thinking about this mod also as far as a sealing problem it would seal just like a stock midgate on the outsides and you would just have to put a rubber gasket down the split my only design hangup right now is a locking mechanism on the 40 split do to the fact that the lock would still be factory on the 60 side. have the midgate siting in my yard.

still awaiting delivery of midgate from ebay, thanks a bunch, prince, for not bidding against me. I'll be sure to take lots of pics while trying this, but if I change my mind, you get first dibs

I could use a split midgate...for some reason I always goto Home Depot to buy 2x4x8's and plywood. Whenever I go usually I go with 2 of my buddies and we always have to go 3 up front...and I have the bucket seats. Luckily I only live about 5 miles away.
Good luck with your mod.

msdinsp,
Hope it works out for ya.
Lots of pictures.
2 questions:
1. What is your plan for the "window-bar"?
When the gate is down, and the window is in, that bar helps to hold the window in. If yo remove the window, that "bar" folds down with the rest of the gate. I'm curious.
2. How are you going to seal the split?

Good luck.

Rob

waiting til I get it to really decide on approach, thought about having it only split when window is in, leaving bar intact, then I would have somewhere to store window when out, with some modification to existing storage parts

midgate came today, looks like it would be pretty tough to split the bar that holds the window, splitting 60-40 should leave a factory hinge and latch on each side. will have to do more than just make a cut though, might have to remove an inch or more, so that it won't rub the seat back, not sure yet how to seal it. only minor problems with the gate, hinges are bent slightly, and it is a darker color than what's in mine now. here's a picture of what I received.
