I considering an Avalanche to replace my 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. I would like to carry long fishing rods (up to 7 feet) in locked storage WITHOUT giving up all rear seating. I frequently take 2 guys with me. Here's my idea...

Cut a hole in the midgate on one side and install some type of hatch/cover like those used on boats... something like this...

http://www.tempress.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=12_68

then I could fold down only one side of the rear seat, and open the midgate  hatch located on that same side. Then I can pass my long fishing rods through the hatch from the rear and still have seating for the 3rd passenger.

Will this work? Has this already been done?

just split the midgate.? its been done before.

Blazer..first  :welcome: second..I do not know of this MOD being done before..I would say that it is doable...I care fishing poles....I useually just take the last panel off and let them hang over the tailgate or bed them to stay inside....I like your idea

Might be able to cut it to fit where the small seat folds and leave the big seat for your passenger.  There is a latch on each sides of the back panel so it should still hold up both sides when seats are upright or one side up when the other is down. I would think.  Little splash panel that drops down behind, doesn't look hard to split.  Might have to put new carpet in there where you split the  back window holding panel.
Might get someone else's opinion on what I said.
let me know how or if you do it.

I seem to recall someone putting a hatch in there, can't remember who though? :E:
a few with the snugtops have added a hatch on the inside since the ability to open the side compartment is lost.  not sure about the midgate though.
