Around here, we were straining to find other Avs driving around for the past two years. ?They're there alright. ?You just had to look for them. ?And there's certainly a lot more of them now than in the fall of 01. ?

However, in the past several months, it seems like there's been a mass proliferation of H2s around here. ?I'm starting to feel in the minority. ?These are not a cheap set of wheels. ?You're looking at some serious coin to get into an H2. ?I can't imagine either. why there has been a stronger turnout for them here, than for the Av, it seems. ? ???

Yeah, but be aware that GM is going to introduce an H2 with a midgate. H2s are trying to become Avs, which is far better than making Avs look like an oversized refrigerator on wheels. I like the H2 as a concept, but think that it's attempt to look military, rugged or intimidating is lost in a lack of effective styling. Under it's skin it's still the same as a Tahoe/Suburban/Avalanche/Escalade/etc. People say we've spent too much on our Avs (just look at the complaints/comparisons on the ST board) but this is taking the conspicious consumption to a whole new level! The day of the BMW as a status symbol is past and was replaced with the Escalade. Now after a few years of that the H2 has become the status symbol du jour. Check out the SUV magazines and there are examples of what every basketball and football player and/or rapper is piloting - and the pages are full of H2s! Personally the ones I've seen and been in aren't that impressive for the price. Given the choice I'd pick an Escalade for both style and function. But in any case I can sit in my Av and look an H2 driver in the eye - size rules and we're up there with the best of 'em!

There are quite a few Hummers around here - but we are also the AV capitol of the USA ;) I also see a great many EXT's as of late ??? Wonder what kinda promotion the local Caddy dealers are using? All I know I love to see AV's around and love to see my area Chapter increase in members ;) :) :D ;D The AV is one of a kind - I find the H2s too boxy and other than a status symbol because of price not desirable. JMHO :)

I went to the Portland Auto Show all hot to buy an H2. That desire cooled off quickly.

Three reasons. First, you can't see out of the damned thing. Second, it uses the underpowered 6.0 liter engine, when GM could easily have used the 8.1 or the Duramax. Thirdly, the inside has about as much space as a bloody Tahoe (maybe less).

Gimme an Avalanche 2500 with a Snugtop or or a 2500 Suburban with an 8.1 litre engine anytime!!!

Steve

I can give you two more reasons why I wouldn't buy an H2:

10 MPG City
13 MPG Highway

I know my Av isn't great on gas, but come on now - I don't want to have to tow a gas tank behind me.

I've been told more than once (by owners, dealers) that a lot of business owners buy the H2 and write a substantial part of it off on their taxes...I think it has something to do with it's GVWR. Not exactly honest for most, IMHO as I doubt many are actually used for business, but that might explain why so many are being sold. I wouldn't expect to see so many of them given the price either.

FWIW, I'd drive one.

You are correct; I understand that business owners can deduct about $38,000 from their taxes the first year as there is a loop hole in the tax code that has to do with the vehicle weight. The break was originally written for farm vehicles, but is now being exploited. (Hey, I'm not knocking it; wish I could afford one, but for now, I'm happy with the AV.)

I looked at the original Hummer years ago and it was probably the worst ergonomically designed vehicle I had ever been in. Visibility was horrible! Good thing our troops rely heavily on electronics imaging, IR, satellite, UAVs, etc. to spot the enemy, because they sure as h=ll won't see them trying to look out of one of these.

Sorry, I have to disagree here. Being a Hummer owner (The REAL one not the watered down H2 thing) as well as an Avalanche owner I have to say the Real Hummer's visibility is surprisingly good. The vertical windshield takes a bit to get used to, but for rock climbing you can't beat it! Rearward visibility is pretty much poor to non-existant, but I can't see Avalanche owners really complaining about this since we all know how well we all can see out the back of our Avalanches!

As a former Hummer owner (the real one, not H2, and believe it or not, I won it in a $100/ ticket raffle) I'd still opt for the Av. We only kept the '98 Hummer for a month, then sold it for a number of reasons... terrible mileage (about 7 mpg with a 15 gallon fuel tank) too wide to fit in garage, interior wasn't that great, my son kept driving up a steep hill in front of our house instead of using the street. If you had to cross a river and mountain range to get to work every day, the Hummer would be practical. For me, it wasn't.
I'm happy with my Av.

That mpg is about the same on the AV 8.1 - with 37 gallons on board you don't need to tow much.

However, with the $20,000 savings between a H2 and AV 8.1, it is good for at least 10,000 gallons of gas or 100,000+ miles of driving.

only the 2500 would qualify, right? (just speculating...I have no idea really)

Have you looked at an H2 closely? There is no room to put anything behind the rear seat except the spare tire! Escalades are a little too pretty to be a working truck so I guess that the AV is the right pick...at least for me. I could have afforded the H2 but I didn"t want to invest in a trailer for it in case I had to haul anything.

some of you are complaining about the price and gas. this thing is made for people who do not have to complain about the money spent on either.

I guess it varies on your location.

Around here, I typically see three or four other Avs a day. So far, I think I have only ever seen three or four H2s in total.

At least here, the Avs far outnumber the H2s (and certainly the H1s.)

LOL - very true - good point

what is funny is there are more problems with H2's then on Avalanche's ;D ;D ;D

I am seeing about equal amounts AV and H2. the only thing, is all the H2's are pimped out... I swear they are running 30" rims (of course I am exagerating) on these things around here.... all gold trim, and of course stereo systems that will make you deaf. The AV still has the aura of Work Truck, and that's what I like about it.

Hey, you can deduct any vehicle cost on your taxes if you use it for business; and then only the percent you use it for business. ?The weight thing has to do with how soon you can write off the total cost. ?If the vehicle has a GVW of over 6000 lbs. the write off can be as soon as the first year of ownership. ?If it is less than 6000 lbs. and costs more than about $14,000 it is considered a luxury vehicle, and you have limits on the $ amount you can write off/ deduct in any one year.

If you don't use the vehicle for business (no matter what it is) you can't deduct it on your tax return.
