My '02 2wd 1500 AV has 40k+ and it is relegated to some city and highway driving (in other words-no off road).

I have gotten as low as 13 mpg and as high as 18 mpg using 87 octane.

I am considering some mods since this is my everyday driver and I need better gas mileage.

I am pretty well satisified with stock performance. What's the best mod to keep performance the same or better and improve mpg?

I think the investment cost in MPG type mods will outway the potential savings........IMO

JudgeRusty,

I would be inclined to agree with Ygmn. I don't think buying a HyperTech or Superchips programmer would realize that much mpg for you, since the computer module is set for 87 octane anyway.

What you might try is disconnecting the + battery cable overnight, then letting the puter "re-learn" your driving patterns. Doesn't cost anything and can't hurt.

You might see some small gain that way and maybe not.
I seem to be stuck at 15.9 average no matter how I drive the truck. :-[

Anyway, just my $.02

Seems no matter what anyone does, mileage does not improve. To get better performance is going to cost more fuel, so more fuel, less mileage. Just a Hypertech at todays fuel prices is a two year driving experience to break even on cost, although you can get other benifits from these programmers.

How about the Direct Hits Ignition System? They claim 3 mpg difference.

They claimed it on the AVY?

As you can see from my signature, I've tried a lot of different "things" that should, in theory, improve your gas mileage. I've got the 4.10's, which probably hurts any potential "improvement". I was looking more for improved performance but if I got better gas mileage, great!

I average 15-15.5 mpg in everyday driving, worst has been 14.4 running into strong headwind at 80 mph, best has been 17.3 all interstate at 75 mph.

If I was looking at mods strictly for better mpg, I would consider 1) electric fans and 2) underdrive pulleys. These two items will remove significant sources of drag on the engine.

Just my 2 cents' worth!
