Hey all,

Well i'm starting to look for a new avy. I've had mine for a little over a year and i have 45k on her already. I'm going to be trading it in at the end of my warranty at 75k.

I'm looking to upgrade to the 4.10's so that i can purchase the boat that i want and get a little more acceleration performance for the few times i do tip in it.

Ok here is the real question. What can i expect for MPG normal driving?

On my way to work, the normal speed of traffic is 75-83 mph, what can i expect in that speed range? Also, what RPMs will i be traveling at?

Any other things i should look at with the 4.10's compaired to 3.73's?

Thanks, Matt.

My tach reads 2600 rpms at 70 mph, 2750 at 75 and 2900 at 80 mph, expect 13 mpg at 70 mph 11mpg at 80 mph. This is a 2500, has different tranny than 1500's. Top gear ratio in 2500 trans is not as tall as top gear ratio in 1500 tranny. I've had 1500's with both 3.73's and 4:10's, definetely go with 4:10's in 1500 and 3:73's in 2500 unless you're gonna put bigger tires on 2500, go with 4:10's. :B:

I get 18ish mpg with my 1500 w/4.10s on the hwy (70-75)....dont recall the rpm's I'll try to remember the next time I drive for ya.

Mine always reads 14.7. In the winter if I use 4 wheel drive it may dip to 14.5 for a week or 2 then go back to 14.7

Thanks alot guys, great replys. Very interesting that you guys are getting close to the same gas mileage i'm gettin now.

I think most of that has to do with me leaving the toll boths though, i do like the trottle.

You 1500 guys can you try to respond with RPM's round 80, i'll prob slow it down a little to 77 ish, but just want to know for knowing sake, i'm going out today or tomorrow to test drive one anyway, but always good to hear real world experience from other people.

Thanks again guys.

Matt.

Just got back from a 1,000 mile trip, 80 MPH with the 4.10s is right around 2,500 RPM. Pulled two race bikes down to VIR and back about 2,000 lbs (trailer + bikes) and another 300-400 lbs of stuff in the bed.

Speed was a constant 80 with a few hard pushes on the pedal for passes and stuff, got 14.9 average there and back - 66 gallons of fuel or so.

I do not think the 4.10s are that big of an impact on gas mileage, normally I get between 14-15 driving around town and to work but this is being really nice with the right foot.

I recently checked mine on a 200 mile interstate run. Cruise was set at 85 mph, outside air temp was 93 degrees and I was bucking a 10-12mph cross-wind. Came out to 17.9 mpg on regular gas.

Just my opinion rab, unless you are totally in love your current AV, I think I would consider getting a new or differant one if you want the 4:10's. Gears for a Z 71 means you need to work the rear end, the transfer case for another set of gears, and then you have to rechip the speedo too so that all your rpm and wheel speed sensors are correct. Sounds expensive. Just my opinion though, maybe a good excust to get a new AV ???

A re-gear would entail just the front and rear differentials, not the transfer case. This would cost anywhere from $1200-2000 depanding on the shop and quality of the chosen gears. The speedo, transmission and ABS computer could be recalibrated by a programmer or the dealership. Guys do it all the time with lifts and bigger tires. Not too cosmic or expensive.

 2000, not expensive????

LOL

I do love my AV, but I can guarantee you that if I started talking new one, the wife would be talking something else not an AV.....Sounds like it wouldn't balance out for me anyway.....

My mistake, The front differential is not within the transfer case? My picture memory from my 02 Z-71 must be failing me. Getting old sucks.
$2000 seems like a cheap estimate too, obvioulsy with aftermarket parts. Myself personally, I prefer the 3:73's even for towing only IF you do not tow more than 10% of the mileage driven. Unless you are drag racing while towing a trailer. If what you are towing is that heavy, start off a bit slower when towing and leave it in D instead of OD when you get up to highway speed and suffer the mpg only when towing. I was a bit suprised and happy to see that the 4.10ers are getting almost the same mileage as the 3.73ers. I still believe an engine only has so many RPMs before you wear it out, therefore the 4.10ers may be replacing an engine before the 3.73ers. Then again, the 4.10 will less strain on all of the drivetrain. Must just be a personal preferance thing. If it were a 2500 I would want 4.10's, for a 1500 I prefer 3.73's.

Wow, thanks for all the great replys. I guar-on-tee that i would replace the ave before i needed another engine, long before, i buy an extended warranty and then it's gone.

Keep em coming if u can guys, thanks alot

Drive safe

Matt.

I have 4.10s and i get 16.4 miles to a gallon and i can usually get about 390 miles to a tank. We've got a 26 foot whaler and when we tow that in my dads 04 av with 3.73 gears it gets about 10mpg.

I just put 1500 miles on my '04 with 4.10's (two people, the dog, and the bed loaded.

Generally set the cruise control at 70-75. Averaged 17.3 MPG which isn't too bad for this size truck.
