Okay I have been tracking my miles per gallon since I bought my truck 11/24/03. I have been getting about
14 m.p.g. pretty regularly. I installed a K&N drop in air filter and disconnected and reconnected the mass air flow sensor, per directions, within the first month of ownership, but I have seen no improvement in the m.p.g. From reading on this site I see that almost everyone is getting better gas mileage than me and I can't figure out why. I do mostly highway driving (100 miles per day @ 80 m.p.h.) The in town driving is minimal (maybe 25 miles per week). I do not consider myself a lead foot but I do get on it every now and then just because I CAN! >:D:B: Anybody got any ideas what might be going on? Or what else I can do to improve the m.p.g. (without spending a ton of money, spent too much on recent mods as it is :-X)

You do your highway driving at 80 MPH. I checked my DIC when doing 80 I was getting around 16 MPG tops, drop it down to about 68 and it ws about 22 mpg. I think that 80 mph is your problem.

68 Huh, but 65 is the speed limit what fun is that? ;D ;D ;D
But seriously thanks for the info. I don't have the DIC so I only have the miles driven divided by gallons used to figure out the gas mileage. I thought maybe the truck wasn't tuned right. But it sounds like my foot needs to be put on a weight loss program. :D

I do 72 to 75 and get around 20. Slow down just a little for a week or so and see if it picks up. Also, how many miles are on your AV? Mine seemed to pick up some after I had around 10K on it.

I run about 75mph on the highway about 3/4 of my tank is highway the rest is city. I get 17-18mpg pretty regularly.

gobot, I ain't callin' you a liar, but I'm still having a hard time believing anyone is getting 20-22 in a Z-71. Maybe you got a special one ;)

9,330 after this morning's drive to work. I should hit 10,000 by next Friday or the following Monday. Maybe things will improve by then. I will also try the slowing down thing :E: although that may not be so easy. ;D

I do get 22 with my 04 z66 if I fuel up and get straight on the intersate and do 68 with the cruise control all day, but if I get off the interstate or go faster, the avg mpg will drop back. I can fill up and get 22 avg if it all interstate without a stop between fill ups. My truck is about 3 months old with 7k on it and I average 18.2 for all types of driving. When I look down and am doing 90 (lead foot) it does eat the gas! haha

I recently made a trip from Pensacola, Fl to Phoenix, Az. I set the cruise at 77 and consistently got 600 miles out of a tank. With a 31 gallon tank, that comes out to just above 19 MPG. Being able to get 600 miles a tank was worth it's weight in gold. I left Pensacola at 8:30 AM and needed to be in Phoenix by early the next day. I made it all the way to the west side of Texas before I had to get some sleep. I made it to Phoenix by about noon the next day. I can honestly say, if I was driving my Jeep, I would have never made it that far, being that I only get about 300-325 miles per tank in the Jeep. So, I don't complain about the MPG anymore. Now, if I only had a 51.679 gallon tank, I could go 1000 miles before stopping. That would be awesome. I suppose if I could figure out how to put another 31 gallon tank on the AV I'd get almost 1200 miles before stopping. NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!

ROTFLMOA.... ;D

Thanks Rich,

I've only been able to duplicate that three times...I was going down South to Hollywood (342 miles) and I measured both times at between 20 and 22mpg....I was cruising at 70 (cruise control) late at night, no stops and never had to hit the brake.....That's the only way it will do it. (y)

Try it

I am stuck on 16-20 mpg..........A little better when I stay out of it and just cruise down the HWY..

12.5 on average for me. Every once in a while an angel blesses me with a 14 mpg but rarely is it over 13. I do 70% highway between 72-80mph.

Most important factors:

1) 2wd vs. 4wd
2) 1500 vs. 2500
3) SPEED
4) Highway definition- (On long Island this means being able to hit 80 on a piece of pavement BEFORE locking up the brakes to stop for traffic).

Just remember when you think you have it bad someone has it worse... :7: :7:LOL
Yeah but you can pull a friggin' house out of the ground with that monster! >:D

I'm travel milage was showing 18.6 driving @ 69-70 MPH.
Traveling out on a recent trip and maintaining 65 as best as possible/Cruise set.. I averaged 19.4. (230 Mi to the Laughlin GTG) Very little city driving at that point.
The truck is stock, configured as shown below..

If I reset the trip comp & drive @ 60 (snore), it's about 20.5 on my shorter trips.

'No complaints here!! :B:

I do recall getting around 22mpg on a tank which was 99% highway @ an average of roughly 60-65mph. Now, that would be "Imperial Gallons", and a bunch of metric conversions from litre to gallon and km to miles ;D

Sure would like to see mine improve a bit after 10,000 miles :B:

I got 14.2 mpg on my last (but first) fill of my 2004 1500 Z66 wbh, with all city stop & go. I need to do a trip to find my freeway mpg. I'd like to find ways to increase... am I out of luck?

I average around 13-14 around the city. Just went on a long highway trip and reset the DIC and it showed 18 on the highway using cruise control going about 65-75..... the fuel consuption reported by the dic was fairly accurate, said I used more on the first fillup, and said I used less on the second, which balanced out for an error of about .1 gallon for the trip.
My burb that I had, got a rock solid 13.5 mpg around town and 15.5 on the highway. I am pretty pleased with the highway mpg with this truck.

In my 03 Z-71 4X4 with 12,000 the MPG is what I think to be poor when I compare it to the 01 1500HD with 6.0 that I had before which is close to the same truck. I get 11.5 around town (we have a winter additive in CT that may be part of the problem) and on the hwy I get 14.5 to 15.5 at 65 to 70 MPH if I am going down hill with a tailwind. I did 1 MPG better when it was new.

I talked to one of our members and he suggested that I try a fuel additive called Adonijah Blends Fuel Conditioner. A 16 oz jug is $12 and is used at a rate of 1 oz per tank. They make a number of claims but we will see. www.adonijahblends.com

On 3/5/04 I will be going from CT to Orange Beach, AL and back which will be 3000 to 4000 miles and will let you know if it works. If anyone has any info on this additive please let me know.

I'm two weeks and two tanks into a Z66 1500. I'm babying the truck still, for another few hundred miles at least.

With a featherfoot in stop and go city traffic, I'm doing 11.5 to 12.5.

If I watch the DIC as I am floating down an unobstructed stretch with green lights, easy footed at 45mph, the DIC will show 17 mpg.

Haven't done enough highway to gauge that side of it yet but I'm not expecting it to be pretty. When I get on the road to travel, I am typically at 80+. With the 3.73 in the rear end, that mileage is going to be horrible.

I can live with the city mileage if it stays there. My luxo sedan isn't any better.

I've only seen 20 mpg once. My long trips are Austin to Ft. Worth and back on I35. Traffic is such that it's hard to hold a steady speed for very long but I'm usually in mid 19's. Weekly driving (City/Highway mix) avg. mid 15's. This is about 1 mpg less than same trips with my Sierra which had 3.42 gears. I'm satisfied. (y)

My 03 1500 4x4 with 23k miles:

50/50 city/hwy

Best highway 19 mpg
3 season average 15 - 16 mpg
Winter average 13-14 mpg

This winter blend in Chicaco area accounts fo about -2 mpg....... What's wrong with this picture? 10% more expensive and 10% lower mileage!!!
