I woke up Saturday morning to a flat tire........ :C:

Seems a nail was in it....My bad luck is the nail was on the bottom when I parked so as thew air let out the nail was forced through the sidewall........GRRRRRRRRRRR :C:

THe tire was unrepairable....as the nail was in the middle of the sidewall and the GOODYEAR man said his company does not repair sidewall punctures.....I agreed...

SO off to pick out a new tire.....(EVERYONE by now realizes their spare is a 16" wheel with more profile to make the same OD tire).......Well guess what they do not have cheapos for 17" wheelssssss.............. :C:

Well after calling around driving around and shopping etc etc etc...I go back to Goodyear and get me the Forteze tire......I picked this because this is the tire I was gonna put on when the OEM wore out......

I had about 30K miles and half the tread gone.....so I figure in a 10K miles I will buy another tire so I have matching on rear......then at aroun 50K I will replace the fronts OEM tires....

All I know this flat stinks as it has messed up my tire replacement plan......

Popint of thread...watch for nails!!!! :C:

PS any one have a Z66/Z71 rim they wanna sell? If I had this I would put a matching Forteze on it and then use one on truck as spare and use my existing 16" spare as a flower planter or boat anchor >:D

Ygmn, I just replaced my 17" Z66 wheels and tires for a set of 20s". A couple of DFW people have expressed interest in original wheels and tires. If that doesn't pan out I'll certainly keep you in mind. The tires have about 11k miles on them.

I know how you feel. I got a nail on one of my tires. Lucky me I have the stock 16" tires so I just bought a used tire and moved the spare tire to where I had the flat and put the used tire on as a spare. I have 34K miles on my stock and I think I can get another 10-15K miles more.

I know how you feel - times 3! Yup, I've had nails in 3 out 4 of my tires. Two of them have the plugs in them, and the third one I noticed one day, and said to myself - "Self, next time you're at the shop, get it plugged." Well, the next time I was at the shop, the nail was missing - I guess it worked it's way out, or perhaps it was only the head. I did find the hole that it was occupying, though.

Thanks.....send me PM about tire and wheel .......I would be interested.....it would allow me to buy another Fortera tire to match what I have now.....

PS nails stink!! :8:

I had nails in 3 of 4 tire on my 2002 and only one of them was repair-able. Not sure if this a trend on these particular Goodyears, but I think this was equal to all my previous 24 years of vehicles combined.

Guess I'm a little lucky - no nails, but did get a screw in one tire. Had it plugged - has held up for 13 months.

not in my av, but in my 93 GMC with the same tires,Yokahama Geolander MT's. i noticed a click as i was driveing. looking at the tires thinking i had a rock stuck in the tread, but what i find is a 3/4 in bolt sticking out of my tire!! :7:....it didnt seem to be leaking, so i decided to try an twist it out, thinking i was lucky an got a short one. turns out it was 3 inches long, and when it went in it hit the steel belts and the bolt was accualy bent over in the tire!!! it didnt even leak at all!! ;D

i'll stick with any tire that can do that

I had 2 tires punctured by nails or screwes within the first 6 months of ownership.....luckily I was close enough to a service station and was able to get them patched...sheesh...and I thought I had bad luck..... :B:

well I finally bought the other 3 tires to complete the set.....see http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=14;action=display;threadid=3645;view=all

for more info....

I carry tire plugs with me.... never had a problem with them in the 6 years or so I have been using them...

Cost... 2 bucks or less for a pack of 5.

cost to have tire pro done... 19 bucks

once I took a self pluged tire in to get them to fix it right, they told me that it looks as good as anything they would have done....

As a matter of procedure, I check to see if the local anti-SUV vigilantes have propped any nails or screws up against the treads, before starting up (especially after being parked in a public place). It kept happening to a friend of mine. I found one, just one time, but not on my Av.

I carry plugs with me too after the one time I had to use them. But, they threw my balance off snd I had to get it fixed right. I won't ever again be without them and fix-a-flat. (y)

plugs and fix a flat do not work on sidewall damage................

I Was mad at that one a while ago...............all is better now though

Right after I bought mine, I had a flat on the drivers front. It was a piece of heavy wire, not a nail. I had it patched and it is okay so far. Same week I received two windshield chips, due to rocks. Luckily, nothing else since then.

I think a simple cure would be just to ban screws and nails ...

(Ok ok, but it makes as much sense as banning guns... LOL)

Doh... Hope I didn't start anything with that comment ... Hehe >:D >:D

I woke up this morning to find the rear tire flat... Put the 16" spare on..... Found the nail... Will take it to get patched tomorrow.... Going to a TIRE SHOP, not the dealer..... only 8000 KMS on the tire.... So well!!!!

First month of ownership, had a nail. Took it to the Goodyear dealer, and bought the road hazard insurance on all tires. In the event that I get one through the sidewall, they will replace the tire. With the normal wear offset.

I had a nail in my tire and had it patched yesterday. Previously when I got a nail in the tire I always asked for a plug. But the Goodyear dealer said they no longer install plugs because they found that moisture can get in and actually cause the steel belts to rust. They are now using what looks like a plug and a patch combination. They repair from the inside of the tire. It was only $18 so no biggie. I will say that on all the tires I have had plugged not one gave me any problem, but ya never know. Anyone else heard that before?

Yeah I was always used to having a plug put in for like $8. But htis new contraption must be more costly or something, who knows as long as it holds air.

Takes more labor to do the patch repairs.

With a plug they simply find and remove the nail, or dip the tire in water to find the hole if the nail is not visible, and shove a plug into it. Re-dip in water to verify that it is not leaking. Some shops use soapy water sprayed onto the tire to find the leak. I worked for Firestone many years ago and did lots of flat repairs.

With these patches they have to remove the tire from the rim, patch it, replace tire on rim, then balance the tire. Much more labor intensive.

I'm glad someone started this thread--I tried looking for info on my tires--My question is does "Do the current factory tires carry road hazard protection of any type? In other words if I get a nail on the sidewall do I have to eat the cost of a new tire.

I live in Richardson, Tx and just about every house in my block or city itself has had a new roof installed due to hail damage. As a result there are nails all over the roads. I've had 2 flats on my truck and 1 tire replaced on my wife's auto.

I prefer patch as it seals the tire better and not likely to fly out like a plug could........

I think next step is self sealing tires like 007.....James Bond.....

I hate construction sites..........grrrrrrrrrrrr

I got a nail in the sidewall of my tire when the Av was only about a month old. Cost me $165 to replace the tire - no road hazard on the stock tires.
