Sean, I think the others have pretty much said it - keep the underside rinsed out as best as possible, keep a good coat of wax on it (we do have days in Dec-Jan-Feb where it occasionally gets up into the 50's and 60's so this is possible) and wash it when possible. I will take my soap bucket and fill it with hot water from inside the house, this helps keep my hands from freezing. Using this method of washing it's possible to do an outside hand wash even when it's in the 40's, as long as it's sunny out and not too windy. My biggest problem then is getting any remnant ice out of the hose when I start. Using this method I can usually get the cars washed once a month by hand, which lets me get underneath and hose out real well. I have a nozzle sprayer with about a 3-ft reach that I use, I bought it at Wal-Mart - it is designed for watering plants but works great for reaching underneath the Av and fenders without getting your hands all wet from dripping water. Other times of the months, when it just gets so grimy I can't stand it I take it to a soft cloth wash that I trust (Gary's on Radial Hwy just north of Saddle Creek).
My son's truck sits out all the time, and we really don't have any problems with starting it as long as the battery is good - no block heater in it. And we don't change to a thinner oil, either. 5w-30 should be good enough on that. Sure, it cranks a bit slow when it's really cold but it does fire over, and it's an '88. Newer vehicles should fire up even easier than this one does (5.7l w/throttle-body injection).
As to a GTG, I now understand about the 30th (did you see the story in the paper recently about the guy who had his car broken into and everything taken but the Husker tickets? - true story!). What about the 29th, Friday? Would that work for everybody?
Also, Sean, I was thinking that maybe one of those blocky, angular multi-tone grey camoflauge schemes might look good on an Av, like they used to put on ships. A pewter Av would be a great start for this.....but I digress....you could get one of those propeller inserts for the hitch Hey, you could even try to get an appointment as an Admiral in Nebraska's Navy! Then you'd have something to hang on the office wall. Sorry, just havin' some fun! (but the NE Navy deal is real).
