i just bought my av 6 days ago. we finally got our first snow in Alaska yesterday. Not only is my 7000 lbs AV squirly, the transfercase whines badly in 4hi, is this normal? I bought my AV used with 8900 miles, is this something i should be concerned about? :cautious:

I haven't had the chance to play with mine in snow yet, but I have been offroading in it in 4Hi, no whine. Also in mud it was squirrely UNTIL I put in in 4WD. As soon as it went in 4Hi it was very stable.

I'd be having it checked.

Hey Artic,
The whine you describe, what speeds do you hear it, and does it sound like a slight oscillation type whine, like aharmonic sound or gears turning? Or is it more like a bearing grind or squeal?

Snow here in Maine last year-none yet this year, but my Z71 Av was rock-solid in 4-wheel high, and no whinning sound that I can recall. Four-wheel auto was/is my most-used winter setting.

Dryish asphalt, At 80mph, It will Whine. Shouldn't really hear it. I get a lock and load, ready for action, HUM. Mine is also rock steady. No problems last winter at all. Studded meats help >:D

Welcome to the club. Where is home? I live in wasilla. Id figure Fairbanks or Homerish if you had snow. According to Jackie the weather wench :2:

Welcome to the club. I live in Colorado and I drive a lot from Denver and Colorado Springs on I-25 and the speed limit is about 75MPH on that drive. I had mine in 4HI driving to Colorado Springs last year and no whining. I unsual drive about 5MPH over the speed limit too. I know what you guys are going to say about drivng that fast in the snow is crazy, but i was in a hurry and we had a huge Network outage at work and had customers down. I don't normaly drive that fast in the snow.

Thanks for all the input. ;D ALASKA AV I live in Kenai.
I took the av to my local dealer and had the service manger drive it and he said it was totally normal for the transfer case to sound like that. I guess i was making mountians outta molehills. but darnit i love my new truck >:D

Have the service manager show you a new one off the line, that makes the same noise.
I'd love to take a test drive through the service center. Nope this one don't make noise. Get another one, drive it through the service center, Nope this one don't make any noise.....Hay let's go for 3 .....Make noise till they drag your butt off the property >:D

No, I never go overboard with people that bum me out. ;D

Hey man are you related to me? that sounds like something I would do. But, for them to get me off the property they are going to have to call the police cause I'm a Big Boy. >:D

AtomTaz. No not related, but a box of donuts might lure me near the curb. >:D At 6'3" they'd need a couple of the local finest 4 me

Artic-AK-AV, I hope your AV is well. gota luv the AV

Watch for the sasquatch driving an AV, waving. It might be me >:D

Well, here is what my dealer said.
The gears in the transfer case are straight cut, and the whine I hear is nothing to worry about and is normal. I tend to agree, as I stated in earlier posts, it is not very loud, and only happens under a no load condition, ie coasting or on a level road maintaining a steady speed.

Welcome to the club! ?I live in Kenai too! ?I like the idea of testdriving the new Avalanche down at Hutchings. ?Did you buy it from them or a private party. ?I would be concerned I do not recall noise when I am in 4 wheel high. ?Small world it is!

;D Hello Gluggo... I bought my AV used from Great Bear in Soldotna .... I try my best to avoid Hutchings altogether :9: The beast had 8900 miles on it when I got it. On my next day off i am going to go and test drive a new one and compare the sounds in 4hi. But heck the way the weather is here, who needs 4 wheel drive. So when you see the Pewter 2500 AV in town gimme a wave :)

i took my AV in for a whining noise i heared from the rear. they told me that it seemed to be normal since other AV's were doing it to.
that's okay. as long as i have the complaint documented. should i have a problem in the future i should be okay.

The only whinning here is from too much asphalt. Tis the season for more work and less play. I can't wait to get back out in the woods. :C: oh, did you mean a different kind of whinning? Now that you mention it. Every once in a while when starting out it does sound like the front is engaged - even though the lights say we are in 2hi. I ussually pull to the side and switch through the 2hi ==> 4hi ==> 4lo ==> 2hi. This seems to get it back to sounding like normal again.

I will keep an eye out for your AV. ?I have the same color with blue marker lights. ?At least for now till the law catches me. ?Keep us posted on your outcome with the test drive. ?I took my truck into Hutchings they did a good job on repairing the grill they broke. ?I am told the mechanics at Glacier are better. ?You will be able to hear my truck if it is next to yours you might even turn your head!

Just got my 2500 back from the dealer. Had the entire front differential replaced. Dealership said I had a slow leak and finally the gears just seized up. The funny part is, I had it in for a diff service on Tuesday, it grenaded on me on Sat. after a 3 hour trip. Im thinking they forgot to refill the thing. Check that differential fluid level!!!
