2004 Chevrolet Colorado
Bigger, tougher, more refined, and more powerful, the Colorado will push the compact S-10 pickup into retirement when it goes on sale late next fall. The Colorado will be offered in nine model configurations, with three cab styles (standard, extended, and crew) and three suspension packages. The powertrain belongs to the Atlas engine family, first introduced with the inline six found in the TrailBlazer. The Colorado will offer an engine choice of 2.8-liter/175-horsepower inline four and 3.5-liter/220-horsepower inline five. The rugged-looking pickup will be offered in two- and four-wheel drive, with a shift-on-the-fly system. Upscale offerings will include roof rail side airbags, heated seats, OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, and standard anti-lock brakes.

Chevrolet Cheyenne
Even as GM prepares to roll out its new midsize pickups, Chevrolet unveiled a four-door pickup concept exploring a potential direction for full-size pickups. The smooth-skinned truck employs an independent rear suspension and Quadrasteer-derived rear-steering system, and it pushes its 22-inch wheels, shod with 35-inch tires, far out to the corners. Like the exterior, the cabin strives for a functional elegance, pushing the boundaries for truck interiors. Under the short, sloped hood is a mighty 6.0-liter/500-horsepower V-8 producing 580 lb-ft of torque. Like many engines in GM's 2003 concept vehicles, the Cheyenne powerplant boasts the Displacement on Demand (DOD) technology that effectively turns off unneeded cylinders for fuel economy.

2004 GMC Canyon
GMC continues its tradition of professional-grade trucks by introducing the all-new Canyon midsize pickup to the lineup. Destined for production by year-end, Canyon offers a choice of two Vortec engines, the standard 2.8-liter/175-hp Vortec inline four-cylinder or an optional 3.5-liter/220-hp inline five-cylinder powerplant, linked to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Space and function options are many, as the truck is available with two- or four-wheel-drive; regular, extended, or crew cab configurations; and with a choice of heavy-duty or offroad suspension. Canyon's 6-foot cargo box (5-foot cargo box on crew cabs) also features two-tier loading and a locking tailgate.

Chevy Trailblazer SS
When it emerged at the recent SEMA show, the Trailblazer was among the first products to showcase Chevy's new family of SS vehicles. Rounding out a full Super Sport collection, the Trailblazer offers muscle truck performance in a sporty package. Lower ride height, 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear rubber, four-piston brake calipers add handling to the power offered by its 6-liter/245-hp Vortec V-8 engine and heavy-duty transmission. The SS package is completed by special badging, new front and rear fascias, and tinted crystal-look taillamps outside, and leather interior with SS-specific instrument panel and drilled aluminum pedals inside.

General Motors announced to its Hummer dealers at the National Automotive Dealers Association conference that it will add a second bodystyle to the Hummer H2 lineup, the sport/utility truck (SUT) in 2004.

Like its brother the H2 SUV, the SUT will draw inspiration from its military heritage and mechanicals from the full-size GM SUV platform. Derived from the H2 SUV, the SUT will be functional, versatile and reconfigurable, adapting its own version of the midgate that defines the Chevrolet Avalanche.

"We first introduced the H2 SUT as a concept vehicle in Times Square with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Rudy Giuliani during the 2001 New York Auto Show," said Mike DiGiovanni, Hummer general manager. "Exceptional off-road capability and versatility in the SUT allows Hummer owners the ultimate opportunity for adventure."

The SUT will blend the superior off-road capability Hummer is known for and a versatile rear cargo bed with an adjustable bulkhead and no-nonsense interior. A distinctive feature will be its folding bulkhead at the rear of the passenger compartment that allows customers to have the flexibility to reconfigure this area for carrying people or cargo.

The H2 SUT will be built at AM General in Mishawaka, Indiana by the United Auto Workers Local 5, the oldest UAW local union in the country. The H2 SUT is expected to go on sale in the second quarter of 2004.

Chevrolet's full-size trucks and sport/utilities are among General Motors' best products. Take the relatively low-volume Corvette and the high-profit-but undriveable-DirecTV subsidiary out of the equation, and this argument becomes even more persuasive. Chevy knows what it's got and is busy beefing up its truck line with appealing tuner toys and lust-inducing concepts. Three such vehicles stood out at the SEMA show in Las Vegas: the Silverado SS, the Avalanche Base Camp, and yet another Tahoe Z71 concept. The Base Camp and Z71 take the active-lifestyle image to extremes, while the Silverado SS says muscle truck all the way.

The Base Camp has sleeping bags and a Coleman propane stove with cooking utensils, so you can convince your neighbors that you really take your Avalanche off-road.

Even though the Silverado SS hints at what the production version will look like when Chevrolet finally gets its Ford SVT F-150 Lightning-challenger on the street, many components are strictly conceptual: Its bed (shortened 16.5 in. and integrated into the body), four-wheel independent suspension with adjustable rear air springs, and Corvette-sourced rear-mounted six-speed manual transaxle are all unlikely to make the showroom-bound version.

That six-speed orchestrates another Corvette-sourced performance component: an LS1 aluminum-block 5.7L V-8 bored to 6.6L for SS-concept duty. Chevy threw in a competition roller cam to help it crank out 480 horses and 475 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the short-cab F-150 Lightning, the SS concept is an extended cab, with two rear doors and seating for four.

You can easily see the new Suburban-based Avalanche under the SEMA-fied Base Camp concept. It's gussied-up with GM Accessories and aftermarket manufacturer goodies, including a luggage basket, brush guard, tubular side steps, hot/cold beverage console, and DVD player with four screens. It also has a prototype tent that fits over the truck bed, Coleman propane stove, two-way radios, a lantern, coffee maker, air mattress pump, heater and camp utensils, with sleeping bags, back packs, and duffel bags supplied by The North Face. What makes the Base Camp so special is that it's a tasteful example (despite so many add-ons) of how to outfit a sport/utility for a serious getaway.

The Tahoe Z71 concept is even more subdued, although its big chrome brush guard and power winch assembly is a bit much. But we like the burnt-orange paint, nylon seats, and interior trim, again by The North Face. The Z71's cargo area is surfaced in rugged black rubber, making it useful for stowing muddy mountain bikes. More important, the tie-in with The North Face signals that Chevrolet may have found a marketing partner with which to compete against Ford's popular Eddie Bauer models.

To borrow some lingo from another thread:

Colorado: HOT!
Cheyenne: NOT! who wants a chop-top?
Canyon: WARM; little change to me
TrailblazerSS: NOT: bling-bling; why must everything have 20s?
Hummer: HOT! can never go wrong with another hummer
SilveradoSS: NOT: S=bling? see TrailblazerSS
BaseCamp: HOT: really? for real this time?

TrailblazerSS: Comes with a 245 HP V-8 instead of a 270 HP inline 6??? You'd think an SS would up the HP a bit...

If the Trailblazer SS was available with 3rd row seat and if the Hummer SUT is available in Victory Red.....

Emptyin my driveway

well I was at the dealership the about a month ago and I saw the V8 logo on the side of the SUV and I asked the sales person about it. He said they are sticking the 5.3L V8 in them now. If I remember right the 5.3 puts out 285 pony's.
