I had new exhaust put on my avalanche Friday. I went with no mufflers. After the cat there is a y pipe with a pipe to each corner of the bed. The sound is very aggressive. But it is not to loud on the inside. My dad drove it and said he could barely hear it on the inside of the cab. But on the out side the exhaust screams. I did not notice any loss in power. my gas mileage went up 1 mpg to. I love this truck now.

I need to hear this......Any sound clips?

How does that work when you take it in for the State inspection?
Wouldn't a lack of muffler be a "fail"?

Rob
The new high performance Dodge Neon (SRT I think it's called) comes from the factory without any muffler, just the cat.

stepsidez71, you must be running a 5.3, as you would NOT get away with that on an 8.1, why would there be a "Y" pipe there are 2 cats...why weren't the pipes just run off of them. And as to the power/torque loss. I'm sure you have lost some of it... BUT THE TONE OUT OF IT IS "WORTH IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Prince_FuFu, inspection should NOT be effected, as the cats are still on.

I take it you haven't taken a long trip yet.....heh

No noise ordinance where you come from?

Oh, and the bottom end? I hope you don't tow......

Any sound clips that can be made? When I did that mod my head hurt after all the noise I got and vibration. Any secrets you can share how this was done, like duals, crossfeed, or any other information you can share. I am still figuring on the gas mileage gain as it would appear that since a lot of back pressure had been eleminated, then the cylinders could not burn the fuel proper, nothing to hold it back. Did you change the cats? Really curious about this one. What size pipe did you use from the front to the back, and what size and type. Real curious minds want to know. Did you have any check engine lights come on as mine did? ???

Chev04,

You had your check engine light come on after the 70 install, or the 80? What was the code number. This shouldn't happen based on what you did (well, with the 70 anyway).

I think this guy left the converters on, and the "y" it sounds like.

Muff,
Just for the record, and so that I don't have to dig thru hundreds of posts, what is your recommended set up for the 5.3?
I want a nice growl at throttle, but kinda tame on idle.
No resonance at any speed either.
Give me exact specs. (1 in 2 out, 21/2" in 3" out).
Don't need to get too technical, just need the basics.
How's is the Flow 50 in your opinion?

Thanks

Rob

Sure Prince, here is what I have posted when met with the criteria you have given me:

Big Block 70 series Flowmaster part number for your vehicle is, #530722. This muffler utilizes a 3 inch center inlet, and two 2 1/4 inch outlets.

Use 2 1/4 inch tailpipes for optimal scavaging. Make sure you have the work done at an experienced custom exhaust facility (this means not Midas or Meineke, usually). The drivers side tailpipe is very tricky, but can easily be bent by an experienced custom bender. Behind the rear tires is the route to take.

You will definately achieve more bottom, and top end power even without headers, however, with a good set of headers you can really boost not only the bottom end, but the torque. Excellent for towing.

A system with the Big Block Flowmaster and two 2 1/4 inch aluminized tailpipes would cost you (in my region):

Flowmaster Big Block Muffler: $150.56 (list price)

Pass side tailpipe: $65.00
Drive side tailpipe: $85.00

Labor: anywhere from $35.00 to $55.00

To enlarge the front connector pipe in front of the muffler fron 2 3/4-inch to 3.0-inch the price should be around $30.00.

If you want the 50 (you will get more "growl", but also resonation), use part #9430602. If you want something that is a little between the 50 and 70, use the 50 SUV muffler, part #530552. Lots of people like this muffler, it just depends if you are willing to tolerate the resonation, to get more sound. Use the same pipe size as with the 70.

Don't forget to reset the computer after the exhaust install.

Also remember the exhaust mod only gets better when coupled with a good cold air intake setup.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I will try to answer....

Hi muffman,

I did have my engine light come on when I tried a straight through run of pipe off the flange from where the two cats meet. No muffler in-line. I am curious if this gentleman got the same result.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be mean or cruel or insensitive here...
But your dad must wear hearing aids!!! That has got to be the LOUDEST THING ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH!!!
Well almost anyway...I just can't stop laughing at the thought of how LOUD it must really be...I love it as much as you do and I havn't even heard it yet!!!

P.S. I guess only in Boonville In., and a few select other places in the U.S.A. are you allowed to be so evil (translate=good)

About 100 yrs ago, when I was selling used trucks, we had one (a reg. cab long bed with 5.7) on the lot that had the muffler removed and just the cat on it. It was louder than I would have liked, but on the outside I'd say about like 40 series FM. Didn't sound too bad really. But I certainly wouldn't want that on anything with a "sound chamber" to ride in.

i can't believe your AV is not loud without a muffler on it. i had two trucks modified at a local muffler shop sometime ago. all this yielded was a bunch of resonance in the cab at highway speeds. i did not like that too much when i think about it. it was cool when i was driving in the city i guess.
as far as power goes i think some was lost. with no muffler you lost back pressure which plays a part in the overall power producing process. but, if your happy that's all that counts. keep on moddin'.

WOW... 100 years ago.....
Wasn't that back when they had those huge cats? They were the size of a kitchen table and weighed a godzillion pounds?
Wish I could say it was before my time, but it wasn't.

Seems like 100, really only 10.

I've got an electric cutout just after the "y" pipe. I could get away with driving that way if I don't give it any gas. As soon as I give it some gas it sounds like a green flag at Daytona. My 5.3 is highly modified, but still.....
