New Here. Couple Questions TIRE SIZE

Hey guys hows it goin...im not going to try and sound cocky or rude on here, but i im just coming in here guessing that im probably the youngest person to own a Chevy Avalanche as of late. Picked up a fully loaded 2003 model about 5 months ago, just decided to get on here because i had some questions about some of the stuff i can do with it.

As of now the Avalanche is bone stock. Except for all the fully loaded options minus the DVD player.

I had a question on Tire Sizes however. Was wondering what the biggest tire size at stock height for the truck was. I want to give it the kind of popped out tire look a little without getting too popped out. Im not one of those that is into 22" rims. A truck is a truck. I thought the 285/60's where the biggest i could go at stock height without lifting. Anyone know for sure? Thnx for your help.

I think 285s are the biggest you can go without rub, you can try the search button on the top of the forum and see what you can find, try 'tire size' or 'wheel size'.

How old are you claiming to be the youngest, I'm 23 in October and I know I'm not the youngest here.

Welcome to the club, you'll find no one cares about how old you are, just that you enjoy your truck (and have money to mod) :p

I'm probably one of the older members here. I don't care how old someone is, only the content of the posts that always help me out. ;D

WELCOME...............

many threads are on here about your questions...I suggest a search or a stroll through this section to see what has been written already about your ?? and then respond in one of those threads...as we like things nice and tidy....

THANKS and good luck

You can't possibly say you're the youngest when you don't even say how old you are.

I was 20 when I got my AV, I was 20 when I joined the club. Now 21. There are several young 20s here. Are you younger than that?

Welcome and enjoy!

I just turned 19 august 5th, bought car 6 months ago at 18...for your answer about age....

Sorry about the search tool, wasnt even thinking. :)

See :) I figured i was...only reason i said anything is because some other guys i met that had some kind of Avalanche Club stickers where being complete asses to me about the truck, Telling me to take it back home to daddy and such. Quite frankly ive worked hard to get to where i am and it just kinda pissed me off. So i kinda let everyone know, as so that they dont think i just leak off parents. Im a Network Admin at a base.

Some info...there is a 16 year old from COLORADO who has one .....

AGE does not matter and should not be brought up so enjoy...........

If you're looking at 60 series I'm guessing you have a base model with 16" wheels (no Z-71 or Z-66). If it's a 2500 be very careful that the load rating on the tires you get match stock. You should be able to fit 285-305 width tires depending on the manufacturer and "actual" section width. As said above, look to the search button for your answer and welcome to the club.

PS. What kind of Avalanche club sticker did the guys you mentioned have on their vehicle?

It just had a sticker that said AVALANCHE and then under it said Colorado Club, i have the Z-71. Its a fully loaded Avalanche, ticket price was 42k, if that helps...but i only looked at the 60's model of tires because thats what Discount Tire was stating the highest size was. But i read in 1 of the other posts that 305/60's would fit. So im gonna try and fit those on.

Running 285/60/18"s on my '03 Z71 without a problem at all probably could run 305's, but it might be close ???

Ok, so unless the truck already had aftermarket wheels you've got 17"s on there. So you'll be looking for 305/60R17. I'll be really interested to see how those fit. I would have thought the 60 series were the ones people were running ont he 16" stock tires. Most people putting tires on 17"s are running 70s. DEFINATELY take pictures and drop us the results. :)

Will do take pictures and let you guys know, even with a little rub i might just go in and start chopping away a little at the splash guard plastic that its rubbing on, but it looks like from the 285 pictures they will do nicely. Will let you guys know. And they are 17" indefinately.

Hello and welcome,

I've got 285/75/16 on mine and they fit great. No rubbing at all. These were the tires off my '99 silverado. Once the tread on these are gone, I will be looking at going with something bigger and a lift.

Oops, just realized that I had the numbers backwards. The 60 series are SHORTER than 70 series of the same width. Not the other way around.

Here's a comparison of rough dimensions compared to my tires. Keep in mind though that all manufacturers are slightly different on their actual sizes.

Tire Size ------ Width ------ Sidewall ---- Diameter
285/70R17 --- 11.22" ------- 7.85" -------- 32.71"
305/60R17 --- 12.01" ------- 7.20" -------- 31.41"

Off the cuff I'd say those tires should fit just fine with no rubbing. You're picking up about 3/4" in width, but losing about 1-1/4" in diameter. If someone makes a 305/65R17 it would be almost exactly the same Sidewall height and Diameter as my 285s, but I think that size is probably pretty rare.

Any pics of 285's on a Z-71?? Im thinking about them for my 04. Also, any noise or handling issues? Thanks!

Just an FYI...

I have Goodyear GTII 285/50/20s on my AV and have noticed MINIMAL rubbing with the back tires...nothing big and doesn't hurt either, just happened to see it while cleaning my rims.

:) Hey JobeHonda

I have a base model 1500 and have test fitted nearly every size available. Almost all tires larger than 31.5" in OD will rub somewhere at some point in the normal motions of the suspension. I tried a set of 315/60R18 Nittos when they first came out, and although they looked awesome, they were just tooo darn big for a stock truck. I currently have a 305/50R20 on my truck and they rub very slightly at about 3/4 lock when turning left. For a stock 17" rim try the 285/65R17. These fit perfect, no rubbing at all.

Overall, it really depends on what kind of tire you want. Most street tires will fit without much modification. Larger all terrain tires might require some trimming of the fender liner. I've already replaced both front fender liners after bottoming out the suspension off road with 315/70R16 Goodyears and ripping them both out!! In the rear I simply removed most of the small plastic liner from between the tire and the upper shock mount. With my current setup, you cant even tell it has been touched. Good luck and be sure to send some pics.

Here's a pic of 285/70R17 GoodYear Wrangler MT/R on my '03 Z-71. There is no rubbing at all on the stock rims. There is a little road noise, but less than I expected with the very aggressive tread. Handling is good, though the taller the sidewall the more "squish" and "tailwhip" you'll feel in my experience. The MT/Rs have a VERY stiff sidewall so it helps work against that somewhat. To the contrary, the low profile large rim tires (20, 22, etc.) handle better laterally but you feel more bumps and bounces. That's the trade off you make when you start adding or taking away sidewall.

Sorry, the light in the first picture isn't the best. You can compare it to the "before" picture below it and get a better idea though.

Just guessing, but I bet those 20" rims are 10" wide or so. That has a lot to do with rubbing too.

I mentioned in another thread that I thought 285/65R17s would be a great fit but didn't know if anyone made that size. Can you rattle off a few companies/tires that come in that size Tiregod?

I just got my tires n rims yesterday.
285/75/16 n they do rub some but they look sweet.

Just ignore that the truck is filthy.

Oh, no lift kit was needed, but they did have to torque up the springs a couple inches.
