What seemed to have started out as a great thread and as joke between two mbrs has me very frustrated and has me thinking about the aim of this forum and the moderators job.
I have been a mbr ever since I purchased my Ave in 2001 and have greatly enjoyed reading many posts about all kinds of issues and topics. There have many threads that I enjoyed and some were even not Ave related, some were the bantering back and forth of a couple of mbrs even.
I never posted very much thinking I did not have much to contribute. Recently a local Aver joined the club and I started visiting the site more and actually contributing more with my experiences and opinions. This led to the thread "No fair -- Bryker". It was never intended to offend anyone, it was intended in good fun and in a light banter between me and another mbr, just like other threads have been in the past. I perhaps got carried away, but never deserved what I got. I got ridiculed by the Moderator, who claims to have gotten many complaints about the thread. It is funny reading over it again and seeing on how many mbr comented positively its hard to understand.
There was nothing rud obnoxious or vulgar about this thread, and the last time I checked we still had freedom of speech.
The comment about getting lots of emails stating that there is new post in a certain threads, well you dont want to get those dont monitor a thread. i monitor a few of them and sometimes I get 40-60 posts in a few hours, and they are only for a couple of the threads.
I thought I would post the email I sent BOR RAL after he closed the thread, shich btw was almost 24 hours after the last time I posted, and his response, which took several days from him.

Boar-Ral,
I am a bit disturbed by the way you handled the thread "no fair bryker". If there was something I was doing wrong you should have emialed me and not ridiculed me in the forum. I do take exception teh way you handled this one.
It was a fun thing and yes we got carried away. It happens. I have this and similar things seen in other threads, were a lot of people post one liners or abreviated vulgarity. I think you as a moderater should be a bit more diplomatic in your approach. as I said we got carried away, and when you posted your msg I had not posted for almost 24 hours. That should have been an indication that it was totally unecessary to close the thread without "warning" me via email.

I received multiple messages from other members expressing complete distaste in the direction the thread was proceeding. Coupled with the fact that many members have joked about whether or not I even frequent the forums or do not care what occurs in the forums, I felt the action taken quite appropriate. Judging from the number of messages I have since received thanking me for closing the thread, most Canadian members already thought what I expressed in the forum. I am sorry that you disagree.

I am not posting this for sympathy, just to vent at this Moderators actions, that were totally unecessary.

I do not remember seeing that thread?

I have had the same thing happen to me and yes it sucks but this is not a democracy this site is a dictatorship. Moderators are the law and thats it!

Most are fair and pretty easy to get along with!

Like I stated I'm not sure which thread this was butt! If it was locked because of complaints the Moderator was only doing their job your best bet it to take it up with the Chief!

I agree to certain degree..
I think that moderators here can go on complete power trips, and sometimes it apperars their only reason is to frustrate us.
Having said that I firmly think that Boar-Ral has done things far differently and respectfully on a whole. When I first started the Canadian part of CAFCNA Boar-ral was the first to step up and offer help in locating other Canadian members to participate in our forums and GTG's.
Sometimes a thread has to go, when it contributes nothing not even in the way of ranting.. Here is an example of why I believe that; Last week I had a windshield put in my truck, the guy at 911 drove one of the most tastefully modded trucks I have seen in a while, of course we talked AV's.. I told him about Niagara with great anticipation, I thought for sure I just found a great local sponsor that would be highly benificial to our local members, his shop is directly across the road from our last GTG in Brantford.. His shop is loaded with accessories, rims, all the works.. I gave him my verbal tag and went home. Later that night I came on line to see if he signed up only to see a thread of single words leading nowhere.. It was a bit of a mess.. It was far from the golden horizon I promised him when I gave him our URL.. At all.
I was one of the people that requested that thread be shut down, not because I think it was a mindless waste of time, but because I still use this site as an avenue to persue sponsors and new members.
Again, I am not disputing your rant Bryker, I understand what you are saying, but at some point those threads just have to go, much like my Avatar thread..
Boar-Ral is not the bad guy here, all things considered he is doing an outstanding job maintaining our section of CAFCNA, as a matter of fact he is the reason we have this at all. If you read the rules about the GTG section I think you may understand a bit more as to what he actually does for us..
Cheers!

Okie.. Okie.. I didi it.. I'm the one who complained !! hehe j/k

Actually, I'm the new addition that Bryker mentions. I started the thread to bring a different dimension to the Canadian element of the club.

Bryker and I... as well as many of the members shared in the laughter and positive feedback we received during the topic's active life. Nowhere on this thread was there any vulgarity or insinuations that would be offensive to the faintest of heart.

I also agree that we went overboard and even made reference to this in the thread... Yes we were abusing the number of posts .. but only because it had to do with competition on the number of posts we had.

Notwhistanding that... there are threads on this forum (and I am not complaining about it.. nor is this in any way a suggestion to shut them down)... but some of these threads are purely for fun... have nothing to do with the theme of the site ... but are FUN !!

I actively participate in those threads... WHY. ?? Because they are fun and they allow me to get to know the people who frequent this forum. It allows me to gauge (dare I use the word.. unless it has to do with dash parts... ) people's level of humour.

If it wasn't for people like Yakmar.. members who spice up the forum... this place would fade away into nothingness.. It is this camaraderie which glues us together and keeps us coming back !

I don't envy a moderator's job..
(vote for me... vote for me) ... subliminal message over...

I don't envy a moderator's job and I certainly respect the work involved as well any initiaitve which may have contributed in the development of this club ...

but .....

Let's not go overboard and start reprimanding members who are simply having a little fun .. pushing the enveloppe ... but nonetheless recognize where the line is... and dare to step over it.. in a very tiny fashion. That thread was not abusive at all... it was simple rivalry aimed at drawing people closer.

Another point I'm concerned about is the following:

Coupled with the fact that many members have joked about whether or not I even frequent the forums or do not care what occurs in the forums, I felt the action taken quite appropriate.

Please Boar-Ral, I'm hoping that this should never be a reason to bring down the hammer on someone. Let's judge content ... not perception. And please don't quote me the corporate line that "perception is reality", I'm too old to accept that. I am not attacking you .. I am simply stating my opinion, and I have been around corporations too long ... so I am pre-empting that line. Not that you would ever use it... but I'm too use to having it shoved in my face... this is what time does to an old soul.

All in all... I must also agree that with these few exceptions (in my honest opinion).. you have provided us with sufficient rope to hang ourselves.. and at time we may have misbehaved.. You have been flexible and it is appreciated.

In my opinion, PM goes a lot further than a public ultimatum.... and it will beget a lot more respect. There is always room for discussion and most people will openly respect and accept one's values. As I post this line... a few people will look at it and say... "Wait a minute... shouldn't that be in a PM?".. Well.. the cat is out of the box... already.. so does it make a difference ?

I do respect your position and recognize your responsibility to keep a healthy distance.

On the subject of mature content ....

Maybe what this place needs.. is a "Restricted" area.. where kiddie-inappropriate content (and I don't mean softporn or sexually permiscuous speech).. but something of mature content.. And then the "sensitive" members can simply "choose" not to open those areas... (if possible .. it could even be username/password protected) ...

More work for the brass here... >:D

Just my .02

Respectfully,
CK

1) I think your thread would have survived if it had been posted in the "Bar and Grill" section of this site and not in the Canadain GTG section.

2) This site was around long before Yak was ever here and it was still very informative and fun to visit.

Is this a joke I am missing??? I am kind of slow sometimes. I have been a supporting member, and do not know of this if it is true. Please help a simpleton. :p :2:

since it was "just between 2 members" - u could just have taken it offline

That would not have been contributing posts .. which was the whole idea behind the thread.

I guess so... and herein lies the inconsistency of policy !

hmmm.. I said people like Yak, not Yak specifically. I was simply using an example. All I am saying is there has to be some humour in someone's life (this forum included) otherwise you might as well work 24 hours a day.. and forget about enjoying life.

This next phrase is not directed at you AV42Medics.. but it is suitable to describe this particular issue.

Some people can't see the forest for the trees !

No, can't see it. I have been a supporting member since it was offered again, but have seen no proof of it yet. I contacted YGMN, and SH. Thanks

I couldn't provide the link if it didn't exist.....
your message is you are not allowed in this section....not that it doesn't exist......

where's an SM that will verify?

I was just messing with ya ;D I sent them both a note...maybe just the original supporting members are allowed. They don't seem to have a handle on the new supporting members. I tried to join back during "the difficulties" and it would never accept my payment, so maybe I am just out of luck :(

The thread and the forum are there, sure enough. Not much action in there these days, though

another reason someone needs to get on the ball, paid my supporting member dues, finally got my mug and decal, but still don't have tag by my name, or access to the supporting member section, by the time I do, I'll probably have to pay up again

Speaking of being/getting on the ball, did you happen to mention your CAFCNA screen name in the message portion of your PayPal payment? It makes it a lot easier to put SM tags up when we know everyones screen name! :2:

When I read this, I mentioned it to the administrators and they reported that the people without a tag by their name or access to the membership forum are first-generation members and they are upgrading the web site software in order to bring them up to speed and grant them access and the flag by their name. It was discussed in the Supporting Member FAQ but is taking longer to implement than expected. I did bring it up though and they are working as quickly as they can to get you your access.

And to be Totally Clear Chief Started The Original http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=3407. When it got to be large and I was still a Mod for the SM Forum, I started the second thread and posted that Picture of Lindsey Voulo. And yes the pictures you pay to see are quite Excellent!!!
