O.K., Now I Need A Muffler Re-cap!

Man, this is gettin' cornfusing. Looks like I still need more edumacating. I just left the muffler shop with nuthin. I've got K&N to bring more air in, now I want more out. Bearing in mind that I'm an old, short, fat, bald guy with kids in college I wouldn't mind a little more rumble but 40 series Flowmaster ain't the plan. I'm extremely annoyed by interior resonance and do a lot of towing at 75 in 3rd which makes this even harder to eliminate. I was thinking 70 series Flowmaster. Is this the plan? Do you lose so much performance between a 40 and a 70 that it's almost not worth messing with? Does a 70 series really not have the interior resonance? Does the DeltaFlow series really work better to reduce interior noise? Was anybody besides me (never looked under there) aggrevated to learn that because of our strange 1 in 2 out you've got to spend more money to replace the tailpipe? Is there a definitive proven better choice for what I want? Muffler guy said if I wanted to move a lot more air than stock but keep it quiet I should try a Corvette muffler???

Life was easier when I just drove to the lake and spent all my time worrying about ProMax mods to pick up another mph on the Bullet. I really don't want to be addicted on water AND land.

Thanks for all your help here and on previous questions. You guys are a great group.

There's no diff in performance with Flowmasters. The only diff is the amount of baffels they have to cancel sound. I'll agree 40's are loud, I have one, but don't mind it. I had a 50 on my silverado and it is quieter. Your best results would be go to the web site and compare their sounds. 70 series should be pretty quiet.

Just make sure that the muffler is placed as far back as possible and the tips are not left under the truck, as this can cause interior noise also. Point them away from the truck.

I have Flowmaster 40 Series as well. What makes it louder is the tip. I have a 12" by 3 1/4" chrome tip which really resonates the sound.

I had a similar set up with my 2000 Silverado.

Well here's my 2 cents...I also have a flowmaster....if noise is a concern than you can pretty much cancel this one out.....loud and beastly.....40 series that is.....

I would go with the 70 series......like chevylover said the only difference is in the baffels...performance wise you would expect to achieve the same results....the only difference is most folks would here Chevylover, Roarin, and myself coming 1 block away....

Also consider the magnaflow mufflers, they are also highly regarded and may not be as loud as the flowmaster muffler.....

I have just put the smaller (noisier) Magnaflow stainless on and outside the vehicle it sounds great. Quiet at idle and cruise (mostly) and deep when you stuff your foot to the floorboards. However, under partial or light loads, between 1600 and 2000 rpm there is a substantial in cab resonance. If you were accelerating slowly or going up a slight grade you hear a loud drone. With my 3.73 gears it occurs between 65 to 75 mph. I drive a many long days to go fishing (Seattle to Missoula, 7 hours non-stop ) and I am afraid that it will drive me nuts. I am going to the muffler shop this week to see if the larger (quieter) muffler would cure this. I hate giving up the great tone of the muffler. I suppose I could turn the radio way up!

Well, I went and changed to the larger, quieter Magnaflow to lessen the resonance I was getting between 1600-2000 rpm. The droning has lessened, but so has the wonderful exhaust note. It is not anemic like the stock muffler was but lacks the authority of its louder sibling. I am told by the shop that flow is still very good, its just quieter due to the larger size. I guess you cant' have everything!

You can't really have the best of both world's. You have to give up one to get another. I concentrated on the note my 40 series puts out coming home from work last night. Cruising across the Bay bridge at 65 and then on to home at 70 I must have grown used to it because it doesn't bother me at all. :B:

Here's what I would like: a solenoid-operated exhaust valve. With the switch in the "family" mode, it would be using the stock muffler. But when switched to the "bad@ss" mode, the solenoid would move the valve's gate to dump the air out through a 40 series. We had valves like this on aircraft to handle the bleed-air used for air conditioning in flight.

You can do that with electrically controlled "cutouts" >:D
