Odor After New Muffler Install?

I had my Magnaflow 12589 installed yesterday - love the sound! After driving home from the muffler shop, when I parked I noticed a "burning clutch" sort of smell that hadn't been present before. Is there some sort of coating on or in new mufflers that needs to burn off? Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks,

- Oliver

Someone with magnaflow experience will be by soon enough, but in the meantime...

I have only had one aftermarket muffler installed - a flowmaster on an S-10. It smelled exactly as you describe and went away after a few days. I'd say it's normal and don't worry about it.

HERE COMES MAGNAFLOW EXPERIENCE ;D I noticed after the install of my muffler and dual exhaust the same weird smell for a couple of days. I also noticed it when TNAV03 had his duals put on (same magnaflow setup). It is nothing, and will go away after a couple of days. It just has to burn the NEW (if you will) out of it. I think it is mostly the welding that smells, as it cures, but goes away after a day or two. Not to worry all is good ;D Tell the misses that you have to drive it around a while to burn it off ;) That will get you some cruise time.

new mufflers are coated with a waxy oily crapthat stinks when it gets hot.......

The tubing has an oil coating to help prohibit rust and it takes a couple of good long runs to burn it off ...and you know how pain smells until it's cured.

Give it a couple of days but keep a close watch. You may be close to some undercoating. That could potentially cause a bit of a problem.

It's normal... Mufflers with "packing" tend to do this a little longer than say a chambered Flowmaster ... If it does it for more than a hundred or so miles, then crawl under there and check your clearances; maybe you'll feel better checking the clearances now ... But the smell you describe is spot on to what I'm inferring ... (y)
