I have been looking into the Avalanvhe ever since they came out and since then I have heard nothing but great things. I went to a local dealership and test drove the smaller engine and they wanted $32,000. It was a 2003 that was loaded with 12K miles. I have also found a 2003 with 33K miles (the larger engine) with the same options for only $24,000. The dealer said the price difference was due to the fact that the larger engines are less desireable because the burn oil as much as they burn gas. Please give me some direction on which path to take!!!

There are other differences....

The 8.1L is the 2500 series

More towing different suspension, tires etc etc
there are some posts in the problem section under engine
The 5.3L is the 1500 series

I suggest checking our resource section and chevy website to get more info on differences

Sure sounds like he is a typical dealer. :(

My 8.1 uses NO oil between changes. ;D but it does use it's share of gas :6:

I would go with the 8.1 Liter. I love having the 2500. Mine does burn oil, but still within safe range by oil change time. I would buy another (y)

I have a 03' 2500, and oil comsumption is about 1 pint per 3000 miles...no problem. You would get a lot more for your money with the 2500 series; better towing, better transmission, better feeling...knowing that you have something that everyone else on the road doesn't have!
As far as price; a 03' for 32K seems high. Our local dealer is offering 04's for 10K off the sticker price; so why buy a used one for the same price?
