As most of you know, our esteemed member ChevyThunder will be heading to San Diego and on out to sea (unfortunately being in the Navy does that to ya), leaving Omaha in November  :6:.  With that in mind, we will be having a cruise / GTG on October 22 October 29?? as a farewell party :needhug:

 Note:  See ChevyThunder's posting from 10/20 regarding needing to change the date!  Sorry to say, it looks like the 29th probably isn't going to work out

Here's the plans:

Date:  Saturday, October 22, 2005  new tentative date:  Oct. 29th

Meet Location & Time:  1:00pm, Western Historic Trails Center[/b]
Council Bluffs, IA at the 24th Street Exit off I-80.  Head south one block to the entrance and turn right.  It's a long, one-way one-lane driveway (about 1/4 mile) to the west to the parking lot of the trails center.  Early arrivals can tour the Trails Center and its exhibits; we'll meet up in the modest-sized parking lot.

(Note to Chris and other out-of-towners - the gas stations at the 24th St. exit typically have about the cheapest gas in the Omaha metro area)

Cruise To:  DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge
We'll enjoy the fall colors as we cruise up SR-183 toward Missouri Valley, following along the edge of the famous Loess Hills.  A couple of surprise stops enroute will allow for photo opportunities.  If time permits, we may loop up US-30 to Logan, then across SR-127 toward Mondamin and then back south on SR-183 before heading west to DeSoto Bend Wildlife Refuge.  At the refuge, they have an interesting museum exhibit on the recovered contents of the 1800's steamboat Bertrand that sank on the Missouri River at DeSoto Bend (http://www.fws.gov/refuges/generalInterest/steamBoatBertrand.html).  Admission to the refuge is $3 per car, I'm told.

Dinner:  Gurney's in Missouri Valley
After our time at the wildlife refuge, we'll drive back to Gurney's restaurant in Missouri Valley for dinner.

Total cruise mileage estimated at either 50 or 75 miles, depending on whether we include the loop via Logan.

If you have an FRS radio, bring that along.  Chris, do you still have your flag holder?

Attendees:

ChevyThunder (whew, glad he could make it!)

Myself and Mrs. omahajim and the little one will probably be in, depending on the status of an upcoming business trip.  The northern Douglas County area around us up here in Ponca Hills is nice in the fall.  And there is Alpine Inn for chicken or Surfside Club for seafood if you are so inclined.  Mrs. oj also tells me the Pink Poodle in Crescent (across the Mormon Bridge a little ways east of 680) is nice.

CT Please be careful out there..  You will be missed by all..
Hurry back..

:(

Sorry Chevy Thunder, I will be in Columia, MO that weekend with my company watching the Huskers pound on Missouri.  I won't be able to say good bye, this will have to do.  In your line of work, you understand that time causes change, but what is most important is the footsteps that you left behind.

Thanks for guiding the ship for a while, you won't be forgotten.

IM out.

I should be able to make it on the 22nd. A few ideas for places to go:
Highway 183 from Council Bluffs to Missouri Valley along the bottom of the bluff.
Desoto Bend Wildlife Refuge $3 admission charge (per vehicle)
Highway 31 south of I 80- past Schram Park down to Louisville along the Platte River
230th Street from Waterloo to Elk City up into Washington County.
Ponca Hills to Fort Calhoun along the river bottom and back along the bluff is also a nice drive.
Any or all of the above would be a nice ride.
Just thought I would throw out a few ideas.

I've been a bit busy lately but have also been giving some thought to possible cruise routes and eateries.? Here's some thoughts that have come to mind, no decision yet so I won't update the first post header yet:

Meet point:? Western Historic Trails Center in Council Bluffs is right off I-80 at the 24th Street Exit.? It's an easy place to meet and offers some attraction for anybody that gets there early.?

Cruise:? The Hwy 183 / DeSoto Bend combination sounds appealing to me.? If we met at say 1pm, it'd be more like 1:30 or 2 before we actually left.? With a couple of other quick photo-op type stops enroute (I've got a couple of things in mind here), we could easily kill 1-1/2 or 2 hours just driving up to DeSoto Bend.? Touring the Steamboat Bertrand exhibit, driving around the wildlife preserve in itself is probably another 1-1/2 hrs.? That takes us up to about 5 or 5:30 and dinner time.....

Dinner:? The idea of Surfside Club also ran past me, but I'd probably say no just based on the fact that you have to travel down an extremely dusty white gravel road.? I doubt that ChevyThunder would want to remember us by having to do a serious truck cleaning the next day :beating:.? A friend who specializes in knowing out-of-the-way eateries (and also drives tour busses part-time) has suggested Gurney's in Missouri Valley.? I've never personally eaten there but every time I go by there the place is crowded, usually a good sign.? Rls475 or anybody else, have you eaten there or are familiar with it?? Another alternative would be The Office in Hooper, NE.? I have been there, the food is good, there's the old-town atmosphere with angled parking, etc. but you'd better be there early as the place fills up.? If we wanted to go there we'd need to plan our cruise time accordingly since that's a bit farther away.? Any other ideas on eateries in and around Blair / Ft.Calhoun / Ponca Hills / Mo Valley?

Additional feedback appreciated! :help:

Gurneys is good, about like Farmer Browns. In Blair ther is Fernando's for Mexican food. Or as omahajim mentioned Pink Poodle in Crescent used to be good, but last time I went there (about 10 years ago) they had gone downhill. I don't know what the place is like now. I haven't been to the Alpine for a long time.

These are all good ideas. I would just ask that we keep mind that Chris may be coming down from KC, and we don't want to take him to far North, but then again it's entirely up to him. I think Gurney's would actually take him home a little ways.

Hmmmm?

Sail safe, Chief!

Where are you going?

I guess I could find out, if I tried...  NPC has some "PROS" (and cons...)

My son is deployed on the JPJ.

Hey gang, just trying to wrap up some final details here so we at least know where and when to meet.  Just wondering, is there interest in meeting somewhere to watch the NE/MO football game first (it starts at 11:30), then maybe a shorter afternoon cruise?

I'm not a huge football fan but if others are I certainly don't mind getting together to watch it.

If there's not any major interest, we can still plan our 1-1:30ish meet time......

I have no problem with that. Depending on where we watch it, we could do lunch there, and then cruise or..just hook up afterwards. Not that it means anything but the weather is calling for high 60's and sunny. We all know that could change, but it looks like it will be a good day. A beautfiul day for pictures!!!

I'll watch any football...as long as I'm not paying $30 first.
Give it a day or so for people to chime in and then we'll see what happens.
I have a new mod to finish before this weekend...  >:D >:D

Not that my preference is gonna matter much to the group at large... however... the Mrs and I don't care for football, we'd rather be out doing something with our daughter.  That said, we would attend a cruise/lunch that was in the 1pm to 4pm range.  We have family activities that night at 5pm so that limits our availability for this specific GTG.

But, hey, hope a lot of people come get together regardless, we'll be looking for the final announcement and will try to make whatever happens, at least for a little while.  Lately I have been traveling for work a couple times a month, and weekends are my home time so I make the best I can of it.

Cheers
omahajim

I like the Huskers, but I'd rather watch the Busch race. My day is open so I can do whatever you decide.

Well, it sounds like there's more consensus for just getting outside with the Av's.  So with that in mind, we'll go ahead with the basic original idea - meet in Council Bluffs, cruise to DeSoto Bend, then dinner, likely at Gurney's.

I'll mod the first post to reflect these plans!

Omahajim, come for what you can, you can easily cut out of the cruise when you need to.  I'd guess you could likely make it up to DeSoto Bend with us, and could choose to go into the refuge or not based on time.

See ya Saturday!

ATTENTION EVERYONE!!!!

I cannot do this Saturday. As of today I have to make a trip to Tulsa to drop my dogs off. It was supposed to be Sunday, but plans have changed.

I do however have the following weekend open 29, 30 Oct.

Sorry for the late notice.

Sean

I think I can still be available, and that probably works better for my wife as well.? I'll have to do a massive cleanup job? :p because I know I'm going to be out of town on the 28th with lots of bugs, dust and maybe mud.....

I'll update the header messages to reflect a potential change......

Attendees, let me know of your revised plans......

It looks like I may be going to the Husker game Saturday, & I have plans for Sunday, so this weekend is probably out for me.

Hi Mark.

I really appreciate all of you efforts on this. It's obviously poor timing for everyone but unfortunately this will be my last weekend here, and I have a ton of house stuff to do. I can of course get away for lunch or something, but please don't feel obligated. I know you have family etc to keep you occupied. It's hard for me to keep track of things these days only using the computer at work. My home PC was packed up on Tuesday. I'll send you my number and if we hook up, great...if not, I understand. Once again, thanks for trying.

Sean

Sean,

I hope you get to see this before Saturday mid-day.  I well understand the part of being busy around the house.  I'm not trying to move and there's still plenty to be done.

I guess you're probably right, the timing just didn't work out.  I wish we could have had a better send-off (instead of none :() but I know that happens in life.

Stay in touch, and get that Av stored properly!  Best wishes and Godspeed in your next assignment.  Let us know how things are going.  We'll be praying for you.

Mark & Sue
