I have a 2003 with OnStar. I just had the Bose head unit replaced with an Alpine unit. Now they installed an OnStar modual but it works with a new small speaker that was installed and this is how I think I have read that it has to be. Now the question is, of course the sound of the OnStar phone is not as good as it used to be when going through the stereo speakers. Is there any way to have it go back to the stereo speakers?

In my research on this and I could be misinformed.... You need to put the HU back in... The HU controls pretty much every piece of electronics on the truck :8:From OnStar to the door chime to the turn signal sound... It sucks that you can't replace the HU with something better without having to install tons of modules to make things work....

Lockout,

With the modules everything does work, just a little differently. Now I just want to know if I can get OnStar back working through the stereo speakers.

Grizz, get a different module. The peripheral one we use retains pretty much full on-star functionality through the oem speakers. I say pretty much as some vehicles have a lowered volume level, but the sound comes through the speakers and is adjustable via the steering wheel controls. The exact part # depends upon whether or not you have the bose amp or regular amp. Now if you had a factory amp and removed it or reiwred the speakers you would need a slightly different part. Do you still have chimes?

Kodiakz,

I have a Kenwood amp installed and they put a module in for the door chimes, but they chime through the module itself. They had bypassed the Bose amp when the Kenwood was installed. Also front speakers have been replaced with Mb Quarts. If you need more info maybe you could PM me with a phone number where I could call and talk with you.

Grizz, as you have repalced the oem amp, you can no longer pipe the onstar through the speakers; this info is fed via the hu to the amp and out to the speakers. I suppose you could build a current sensing switcher that would mute the Kenwood and send the on-star audio to the amp and out to the speakers, but I have never tried this. I will give this some thought if yo truly want to make this feature work.

Kodiakz,
Thanks for the info. I just had the head unit installed today and tried out the OnStar and it is just a lot harder to hear and understand then it was when it went through the stereo speakers. Don't know if maybe there is a way to install a better speaker with the module. Just remember, I am not the wiz for installing.

Make sure you have an enclosed speaker like a hands free speaker(s). If they free aired the speakers then it will sound very bad.
