I think we should put a bug into ONSTARs ear for making mobile to mobile unlimited as part of your calling plan. Since most carries offer it in some form. I would think ONSTAR could, so people would use onstar more and maybe they would keep more customers after the first year. anyone agree.

Yes, that would be a good idea. They need to do something I think. I?ve had my AV with On* for about six weeks and I?ve no idea why I would want this. I would never use it to make personal calls on!!

The technology is great, We used some of the free minutes to get directions. ? Just too expensive for directions or calling when my cell is always right there.

I have made sujestion with onstar today regarding this.

I also sujested and interface for computer and web access.

Any other ideas

Can't see why they would have a problem offering a modem option or retrofit so a laptop/ pda can connect. Maybe a simple USB port for it.

If they want to push their product, that would help!
Maybe CDPD capability?

Edit:
Hmmm,
This is my post # 1000 But it didn't do the five stars!
Bummer... :6:

I would think it would be easy. In my area Onstar uses Verizon as a carrier. I guess it would be just a matter of Onstar and Verizon getting together on it.

That would be exceptional.... I could really use that... having a mobile link to the office would be great.... or download a movie... or the kids play interactive games while traveling.... Could be very cool.... they want to sell minutes right? maybe a bit cheaper rate to encourage more user time. AIR IS CHEAP... Great idea!

here's some

Just think how nice it would be for club GTGs, or regional meets so when you go out for AV runs you can talk to whoever and contact anyone in it who has it. Mobile to mobile I think would be the best thing they could add. familly vacations with 2 or more cars with onstar.. ( hey pull or next outlet for potty break or food.) Hey I problems pull over. wouldnt it be nice to comunicate while on the road in a caravan. Onstar needs to get with the program if they want to be in our lives. When I get a response back from them i will post it.

Direct "Talkaround" communication would have to be a hardware change. The system is set up for duplex operation. Tx & Rx are split by 45 MHz (825 -ish and 870's.
It would need to have a broadband (usually the) transmitter, to spread a 45MHz jump. The duplexer would have to be switched in & out,
or another transmitter/similar means, if you want to use it as a two-way (bypassing the cell-sites completely).
Otherwise, one would have to rely on the system to have the "direct-connect" type operation.

(Let's see, what can be used for a PTT?)

Lastly, a "no minutes charged for subscriber to subscriber calls" (like some other plans). Then just set up a conference call/3+ way calling. As long as you're within the system coverage.

My 1001'st post! The five stars didn't show at 1000 (Whatever five stars do..) Hmmm 6? months... Yeah I blab too much! >:D

*****

OK Sperry, I'll bite - what does the -- --- .-. ... . Code Message say?

>:D The MORSE is "Post number 1001 Finally!" I boo-boo'd and left the --..-- out. So I guess I'll edit it.

It's hard to read it anyway; the spacing's kinda weird when typing it in using proportional fonts. I streched it out a little more, in some places.
The Exclaimation point isn't accepted "officially" (yet), either...

`Kinda threw me at first, I thought it was post # 1000 when the five stars show; It's #1001. ;D

Subscriber to subscriber is mobile to mobile which is what I am talking about. walkie talkie mode is not and does require diffrent hardware. Since onstar is almost a roam type of plan you will be switching system to system and maybe cut off here and there. whats the diffrence handhelds do that all the time.

Would be nice if the did setup ONSTAR like nextel then we would have the best of both worlds..

Would love other options. By, with me as a customer, why should they change. I just bought by my second 1K minute plan @ $338 +/- w/ taxes - ouchhhh!

But, I like the excellent coverage. (Better coverage than my handheld).

big diffrence in wattage tooo.

need to back and ge one of the brick phones or car phones that put out 3 watts.

The current split of 45MHz places the receiver and the transmitter at an offset, through a duplexer. If one transmitted at the same frequency as the receiver, it's energy would be absorbed by that device, as the transmitter's energy is notched out of the receiver's port. The direct walkie-talkie mode "talk-around" cannot be done without a hardware change and/or addition.
You would have to have a bypass antenna relay, and a broadband transmitter to do such.

A "Direct-connect" similar to Nextel's, which requires the system to work, could be more easily configured.

Your are right Steve..

Not talking adout that having it work like walkie talkie mode.

What i am talking about is onstar to onstar in cell mode. You know call some one like you do now and get charged for it. I am say free min charge when you call another onstar subscriber.

mobile to mobile is free on most systems when talking to subscriber on same system. Altel just came out with a phone with walkie talkie mode so they can compet with nextel. And you are right it takes a special phone for that on both ends.

...But it sure would be nice!

At least conference or three-way calling, so one doesn't have to depend on another system or a land-line custom-calling feature on the "other end", just to link up.

I wonder if the system will accept DTMF?
It sure doesn't understand English very well!

I would think they all do, maybe when you conect a not book to a mobile phone and it dials it does something diffrent good ?

I wonder if the system will accept DTMF?

I have wondered about this as well. I would like to be able to call my home and enter my home answering machine PIN number. But, with OnStar you cannot. Perhaps a hand held tone/DTMF generator? Thoughts? Anyone have one to try?

Try this: If I remember, it was pressing the OnStar steering wh control while online and speak the numbers. Kinda like dialing an extension. I hadn't worked with it or had a need to "refine" it however. You may have to say "dial" ..
..I can't get mine to recognize my voice well enough for "direct dialing"; several tries just to store them right.

..Maybe go for a Pipo pad after all.

Just what I was thinking, should work reminds me of how they use to break into payphones and make it drop change. cant rember what the 2 tones were.

should work, might have to hold it next to the mic.
