OnStar is now GONEstar ! bluetooth integration

How detailed are the instruction with this thing.  Thanks

not very; but little is needed.  The supplied harness that integrates with the radio is easy to install.  Pull out the radio enough to get to the rear connectors; unlug the factory connectors, then plug-in the harness connectors into the radio (they are an exact fit); then the loose factory connectors get pulgged into the mating connectors on the harness.  It's kind of a "Y" arrangement.

On this same harness is a connector that plugs into the Bluetooth car kit - where the kits external controller would of normally connected.

From there you mate-up the loose wires I listed at the bottom of my first post - and you're done.

Guess that's a no...

BTW - pics are no longer showing on the first page... :E:

I think if I do this I'm going to put the microphone somewhere else and not mess with the on* console.

The pics are now working again.

There's no reason it wouldn't work ... UNLESS Apple decided to not follow the bluetooth standard that the rest of they mfgrs elected to.    Bluetooth... should be Bluetooth... (should be) :)

Sweet!  Thank you!  I'm going to watch FleaBay for these items and try to get it as cheaply as possible! :D

I think I'll mount my mic on my steering column instead of taking the header out and going that route though...would be much easier!

Mike,

Does you Av have remote start?

Installed BLU 29 with a Parrot ck 3000 and the SW controls are not working.  PAC suggested maybe cause my 08 has remote start.

Mike,

yes; but it is the simple model remote start.  My 2008 was dealer upgraded to remote start before I took delivery.  It wasn't ordered with it and they added it later... but it's not aftermarket - it's the GM remote start.

Update:

Switched the Parrot out with the EGO talk and all is well.

older thread, but thought others might not of ever  know about it.

BTW... just for fun, I switched the language of the unit from "U.S." to "Hong Kong".  I lost all bluetooth functionality... couldn't make or receive a call.  But, everytime I pressed a button... an asian sounding female would say

"love you... long time"

:D

I would be afraid I could not read the language to change it back to English.

I just bought an 08 Avy LTZ, i was dismayed to find out there is no bluetooth handsfree.  Mike, your post with full explainations and photos is great.  I have a question, since On* requires a subscription for any functionality, why did you want to retain it?  I called On* to verify this while waiting for the Admin to approve me on the fourm.

My only reason for not disabling OnStar completetly - was to not hurt the resale value of the vehcle down the road.  I tend to only keep a daily-driver for 3-4 years; and prefer to sell it privately (other than just trading the vehicle in).

:)

Good to see you are still around, Mike! I don't see you on Corvette Forum - I assume you are still on C5? I moved over to the C6 section a little over a year ago, when I bought an 07 3LT Coupe.

I don't visit CF all that often; instead I visit www.thevettebarn.com.   I mainly post in their OffTopic section.

I'm going to sell my 2002.  I already have the day off work next January - to be at the Detroit NAIAS show to see the unveiling of the 2014 C7. If I like it, I will order one on May 1 (assuming the ordering process is the same as in the past).

If I don't like the C7, I plan on purchasing a restored  1970's Corvette.  Either way - my 2002 is to be sold.

But, with Yvonne's 2003 AE vert - which she'll keep forever - we will  still have a C5 in the family:

Another old thread i've jumped in on, my Av has Onstar and i really want to connect a handsfree phone kit leaving the Onstar intact.
Is this still considered to be the best route?
I would usually dial out from the phones keypad, but, being able to see a contact list onscreen somewhere (Nav screen) would be my preferred option

Best ???  I don't know about that; it's just one method of many out there.

My 2008 does not have the factory nav system.  My aftermarket  bluetooth dialing is by voice; either speaking the name tag associated with a contact list entry... or speaking the phone numer itself.
If I want to call the wifes cell - I speak "Yvonne's Cell" - and it goes from there.

When a call is received, either the contact list name "Call from Yvonne's Cell" is spoken - or if the number is not in the contact list it says: "call from _______________" and it speaks the actual telephone number.

There are no numbers displayed on the DIC; and I don't know how it might behave differently - if your AV has the factory nav system.

It's kinda interesting your reply today.  I was just thinking earlier this morning  how well this system has worked.  It's been 3 years since installation - and I have changed cell phones once (and had to re-pair the new phone).

Fingers crossed for continued luck !

Cheers Mike, i'll check some online stuff and do a bit more research, i want to be able to see a phone number, i dont want voice activation.
Kinda ties in with your idea that not everyone wants the same thing

Mike, how exactly did you route the long cable from the bluetooth mic?  I don't want to destroy my interior in the process.  Thanks!

It's been a few years, but it seemed to go easily. From the overhead console, using my fingertips I was able to push the microphone cable between where the windshield and headliner meet... all the way over to the drivers side windshield pillar trim.

I pulled off the drivers-side inside window pillar trim... after removing one screw-or-nut (underneath an oval cover)  and then fed it through the inside cavity  of the IP - over to the center floor console area.

That's about all I can remember.

OK, that's great, I think I can replicate that.  No need to pull the dashboard cover as long as the cord can be pushed through the headliner. Once you get to that side support and under the IP it's simple.  Thanks.  BTW I have a 2013 Tahoe but the interior is very similar.

For anyone looking to do this install here is the issues I have had so far.

Goal was for complete integration just as Mike has done. Since our 2008 Avalanche is my wife's main vehicle we carry a subscription for Onstar which she has used a couple of time. So disabling it was not an option.  I am sure that there are other option now a days that will work just as good but I haven't been able to find one as documented as Mike's.

I purchased a PAC BLU-29 and the Motorola IHF1700 (upgraded model of the IHF1000)  Both of these models have now been replaced with the Motorola TK30.  PAC Audio did not have a integration kit for the TK30 that I could find.  I was able to find cables to hook the TK30 into the existing radio but without assurances that it would be 100% hidden integration (i.e. steering wheel control vs. using the provided UIM) I choose not to go with the TK30.  I might switch it out at a later date if I want more of the functions it provides and I can research using the SWC instead of the UIM.

One issue is the PAC Audio BLU-29 only supports the EGO TALK and Parrot CK3000 right now for integration with Steering Wheel Control according to the literature.  THEY NO LONGER PROVIDE THE CABLE FOR THE IHF1000/1700 in the kit.  you can still use the IHF1000 and IHF1700 but without SWC.  Some sites will list the BLU-29 as PnP with the IHF1000/1700 but this is not correct current information.  PAC Audio no longer markets the Motorola products and now is working with the manufacturers of EGO Talk so the cables for the 1000/1700 are no longer provided

I was able to talk with a knowledgeable tech on the phone with PAC Audio and they had some leftover cable for the IHF1000/1700 in the warehouse.  He is shipping me one to help me get the integration I want.  I am pretty sure that they won't hold onto them for long so if you plan to get the Motorola route the IHF1000 and IHF1700 can still be found on ebay and other places but the new BLU-29 kit (rev1.1.4) does not have the Motorola cable included.  Older BLU-29 kits will have them but I am not sure when they moved to the new rev.  You might luck out and get PAC to send you an older cable also but don't count on that.

After reading and talking to the techs I suggest that anyone wanting to do the install, like Mike documented, go with the EGO Talk option as it seems to be the most painless right now.

The place I ordered my BLU-29 from listed that it was compatible with the IHF1700. which in itself is not wrong, they just failed to mention that the new BLU-29's do not have the required Motorola cable for true PnP integration.

I am going to document the install and also diagram the Motorola wiring harness so that if any one else wants to use these products there is a chance of hard wiring the SWC to the BLU-29.

If anyone wants pics of any part on my install please let me know and I will snap them during the installation.

Lesson learned here for me is to go the extra step in researching the products.  Although everything I read pointed to a smooth install I somehow overlooked the upgrade of the PAC BLU-29 and that the kit now longer contained the right cables. I probably would have bought the EGO Talk instead of the IHF1700 had i picked up on that fact.  I was going to return the IHF1700 and get the EGO talk until the tech said he would ship me the cable.

My cable came this morning and it worked great.  Only issue I am having is whining noise when in BT mode.  I believe this is a grounding issue and will be working with support to figure it out.

The cable I received has connectors for all the connectors on the IHF1700.  Because I didn't have to hard wire power and ground i believe this is creating a ground loop and the result is noise in the system since everything is using the ground for the radio.  I also having a little issue getting the initial volume set but part of that is the whining is so bad that.

Nothing in the instructions talked about grounding issues.  I will see tomorrow when I call PAC audio.

Splycer, did you ended up taking pictures of your installation. If so, i'll appreciated if you can share them.

-thanks

I did and I will see if I can get them uploaded over the next few weeks.  Been busy with work and vacations.  Also I had to pull the system out this week.  I am now trying to research a different system.

Long story short  IHF 1700 caused a ground loop issue that I couldn't get rid of.  i worked with PAC and tried a few different things but the whine was still there when a call was made and a popping sound when completed.  On top of that the volume was so low that we could not hear the caller, I believe this was part of the GF issue. On top of that the system was knocking out the TMS for the tires suspect radio interference between the TMS and the BT

Needless to say I am back at square one.
