I looked and could not find anything on the OS-1 device for keeping the Onstar system working when you replace the Head unit. The question is how/will the OS-1 device work if you replace the Headunit with one that does not have a built in Amp. The head unit is sending the sound through RCA plugs to the Amp and then from the Amp directly to the speakers. So my question is will this work for my system? I have many times thought of getting rid of the onstar, but do want to know if this is a viable option to having it? I do know that there is another bypass for onstar where you use a small radio shack speaker! I just do not want to go that way!

its a big radio shack speaker and it cost me 25 bucks, A LOT cheaper then that bypass thing. Took me an hour of work to do, pretty simple really. No cutting of any type required to your onstar harness. I'm sure theres a better spot for my speaker, and my only problem with it is that its still pretty quiet. Any way to make it louder?

Heres a pic that is too large, would someone care to explain to me why this is too big? Seems right size for most people.

Your picture wouldn't work for me.

I got a small speaker with my Nokia Hands Free Kit, it was a one piece thing but would split in two after removing a couple of screws.

I cut a hole (about 2" I think, whatever the size of the speaker was) and two more to match the screws that held the speaker together, in the console on the drivers side, next to the cup holder. Had to grind/file off a couple of tabs on the speaker case so it would mount flush, used the same screws and now have a neatly mounted speaker for the phone, it sounds great, (it's not Hi-Fi, but more than adequate.

Same idea could work for the OS.

The cup holder clears the rear of the speaker just fine.

You are talking about a "recommended" Radio Shack speaker, is there something special about it for OS?

The volume may be a case of trying to drive a large speaker with inadequate power. But that's just a guess.

Picture works now. I see what you mean by large.

It looks unmountable without destruction of something.

Look for a 3" box speaker and see if it solves the volume problem.

Then you could mount it as mentioned above. or right where yours is now. I didn't want to pull that console section out (don't know how) or I would have mounted it there myself, I did consider it, but was concerned about kicking it. (probably would never have happened, but I was very easy to convince that I didn't want to pull that console).

is your ampliphied though? I might try some larger wire for the speaker, its an 8 watt speaker, it should be louder than it is.

I also have an un amped speaker from radio shack for my CB in the CD holder, under the open spot for the radio. It squeezes in there, I want something like that for the onstar.
