Out The Side? Or Out The Back?

I just read that the longer the tip the throatier the sound. Wouldn't it be best to go out the back to get a longer tip installed?

Also, for the overall look, who prefers out the back and who prefers out the side? and why?

Is there any performance or hazard reasons to use one over the other? (think offroading ;D)

There was an earlier consensus back on another thread that if you tow frequently, side exit is the way to go.

Beyond the TBS sittin' on the shelf in the garage, I think my next mod will be a magnaflow muffler, with dual 2.5" (or 2.25") exits out the passengers side. A guy that I work with is in a large GTO club and most everyone he has talked to has recommended the same custom shop. I also talked to a neighbor, who is in a Mopar club, and they also recommend the same place, so I figure I can't go wrong there. Anyways, my personal opinion, is that I don't like the duals out the back, and I wanted something a little different than the typical 3.5" out the pass. side.

Any other opinions out there (pros or cons)?

If you tow definitely go out the side. The other thing to consider is the backpressure issue, the dual 2.5" may cause you to lose low end torque.

I think you will be happy with the Magnaflow, have heard good things about them. ;D

Why not comprise and try a "Y" configuration. Someone at this site posted a picture of it.

It all comes down to personal preference with me...I don't care to much for the rear exit systems, only because it reminds me of the F series stuff by Ford...my landlord has a F-150 and he had dual rear exit....

I like the side exit look...and you could always dress it up any way you like....simply tip it!! ;D

jasgot, I agree with everyone here. It's your pref. Best thing you can do is look at other rides or better yet, go to a shop that has all the different tips your looking at and have some one hold them in the different places you would want to run them. Then walk around your Av and take in every angle. The greater the bend at the exit the shorter the tip you can run. Check everyones sig's for their rig's

I would like my exhaust out the back. Let me ask you guys something. I noticed that there appears to be two exhaust manifolds on the Avy. Does the exhaust go from two pipes into one. If there are two manifolds it would have to right? What I am trying to get at is how hard would it be to have a true dual exhaust installed on the Avy? I was thinking of Borla or the like. I would think that the 5.3 could create a nice sound given a good exhaust!

Throw it up in the air. ?Each side of the engine has an exhaust manifold. ?After each side is fed through it's own cat, it dumps into one 3" collector for the muffler. ?You can see the rest for yourself. Sure you can have a true dual, but considering that your never going to be doing 140mph your better off with the low end torque and sticking with something that leaves you a little back pressure.

One brief comment on this issue. Was cleaning up the Av today and noticed a considerable amount of dings on the bottom and front side of the the exhaust tip. It's a 4" chrome beveled tip in about the stock position (side mount). Also have the molded mud guards front and back (for added protection ???). Of course, I have a 700' gravel uphill driveway to negotiate a couple times a day which doesn't help matters either. Just thought I'd throw this in. While I prefer the side exhaust, it does put the tip more in harms way, IMHO. ;D ;D

As a response to the out the side or back question, You definitely want to go out the side on an Avalanche.

Why you ask ?
The Avy has a midgate. With rear exiting exhaust there is a wonderful tendency for the exhaust/Carbon Monoxide to swirl back up and enter into the cargo bed if the Tailgate is down or the panels are off. Even worse is if the gate is down and the panels are on and the mid gate is down.

It is a safety issue if nothing else.... Go off the side..

Everything that Xrover said + if you ever trailer you don't want the exhaust blasting into the trailer. ;D

The exhaust fumes may come into play but haven't had a problem yet. I put mine more to the back mainly to keep the noise down in the cab. But that doesn't mean that everyone else shouldn't enjoy it, right? ;D

This may be the dumbest question I ask yet...but does the exit style of an exhaust affect emissions at all?

Or am I assuming that as long as you leave the catalytic converter alone you should be fine... ???

You could put turn downs on the cats and the emmisions would be the same. All the tail pipe and muffler do is redirect the sound with baffles so the cops aren't pulling all of us over.

Thats what electrically controlled cutouts are for. ;D

The exhaust issue with regards to entering back into the vehicle mainly is concerned with Carbon Monoxide which is odorless and colorless.

You might want to get a battery operated Carbon Monoxide detector and just stick it under the back seat just in case.

Just being a concerned friend ;)

sadurbin,

I have the JBA Evol system on my truck, but when they sent me the system they sent a magnaflow instead of the K&N muffler. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it when I opened the box but once I installed the system I was very happy I didn't send it back. The magnaflow is pretty quite at first (cruising speed) until you put your foot into it, that is when she comes alive. I had Flowmaster 40's on my Dodge Ram (dueled and exiting the rear) and they were loud all the time. With the magnaflow it's only loud when you want it. I went with the single out the side because I tow a lot and I didn't want to scarifice any low end.

I hope this helps. :D

Thanks for the info Rad Tech.

This is what I wanted to know about the Magnaflow, which is now what I am going to go with. The guy at the shop said that the flow offered by two 2 1/4" pipes is the same as a single 3" pipe. Hopefully, I can get this done tomorrow.

Thanks

I'm not a pro in air flow, but I can say that from all the Hot Rod, Car Craft, Truckin', Chevy High Perfomance magazines I've ever read, they always say that a single 3" will out flow a dual 2 1/2". So it would probably out flow the 2 1/4" also. But you have to remember that we are making 300 HP not 600. By opening up to a 3" it will flow better but then that soccer mom in the Excursion full of kids would probably make it off the line quicker than you.
I went with 2 1/4" to my torque numbers up.

If I am understanding the discussion, I went with a y config behind the rear wheels. I had to fabricate a hanger for the driver side, but used the OEM for the passenger. I was not sure if I would be happy with the look, but now I am glad I went this route. my $0.02 One, caution, if interior resonance is an issue for you, the side config. will be louder to the occupants. ( At least in my application.) :B:

I have just put the smaller (noisier) Magnaflow stainless on and outside the vehicle it sounds great. Quiet at idle and cruise (mostly) and deep when you stuff your foot to the floorboards. However, under partial or light loads, between 1600 and 2000 rpm there is a substantial in cab resonance. If you were accelerating slowly or going up a slight grade you hear it loudly droning away. With my 3.73 gears it occurs between 65 to 75 mph. I drive a many long days to go fishing ( Seattle to Missoula, 7 hours non-stop ) and I am afraid that it will drive me nuts. I am going to the muffler shop tomorrow to see if the larger (quieter) muffler would cure this. I hate giving up the great tone of the muffler. I suppose I could turn the radio way up!

Well, I went and changed to the larger, quieter Magnaflow to lessen the resonance I was getting between 1600-2000 rpm. The droning has lessened, but so has the wonderful exhaust note. It is not anemic like the stock muffler was but lacks the authority of its louder sibling. I am told by the shop that flow is still very good, its just quieter due to the larger size. I guess you cant' have everything!
