over heating

I noticed to today when I was in traffic that my temp started going up. Is there anything I need to check or change before it gets to the over heating range.

What year, if it's a 2005 or newer check to see if the cooling fans are coming on.

Going up from what to what?
I mean from 100F to 220F is OK.

From anything to 250F not OK.

What speed in this traffic?
AC on or not?
Any car in front blocking your air?
What was ambient temp?
What year do you have?

MORE INFO

Yes we need more information. It is normal for stationary vehicles temps to raise a little. Just not a lot. If it goes up a lot then your fan is not working properly.

It's a 2005 1500. The traffic was around ten miles and hour up a hill in CA. It seemed to reach 250 and hoover around that range. I thought I could hear the fans going but I'll check them and the coolant.
Thank you.

Okay, checked the fans and coolant all good. Could it be the water pump or thermostat??

Could be driving up the hill for so long and engine really putting out the HP to get up hill?

Were you heavily loaded or towing?

Completely empty. I drove down to Lucky yesterday, it's only a mile away and it started hitting up again after shopping. I need to take it in but I don't want the mechanic to tell me something that's not wrong and charge me a bunch of money.

The electric fans are going strong and speed up to full power during overheating events? It does seem like a stuck thermostat or underperforming water pump from your description alone.. How many miles/years on current pump?

From his comment from yesterday saying that the overflow tank is empty, I would say there's a leak that needs to be fixed.

Wow. I really need to proof read my posting.
In an early comment they asked if I was hauling anything or had a full bed. I was commenting that I didn't have anything, just a Siberian husky. The overflow wasn't empty and the fans worked.
I bought it five years ago and have only driven it around 10000 miles. Any work done before that I don't know.
Full tune up and flush (of everything) about a year ago.
Thank you

If it overheats while moving 40+ and no loss of coolant or other indicators, I'd change the pump/thermostat. If overheating at a standstill, but not while moving, diagnose fan also.

Any faint hint of coolant smell after driving coming from the motor bay?

Fix it sooner rather than later... Overheating the motor will lead to much more work ($).. Good luck edsigg
