P0449 Evap Vent Solenoid

Eventually. Some codes require as many as 50 ignition cycles to clear. Some as few as three. Pulling the cables is a quick easy way to start fresh.

OK. Do I pull the negative or positive or both and for how long?

Thanks in advance.

I pull both so that capacitors in the system can properly discharge. Might be a "voodoo" thing though ;)

I do not have a clue as to what you mean, capacitors? I do know one thing, voodoo is pretty scary and I am not taking any chances. Besides, Murphy's Law has a way of working against me.  :E:  So I will take off both cables for 30 minutes or more.

Thanks Bassbuff and Henry J!  (y)

replaced both the canister and the sensor under the hood, nothing else though. Is the adapter wiring a must? the cables are of right now, waiting to see if it will reset.

Ok, what's the trick to getting the hose off of the solenoid?  I spent 20 minutes the other day trying to get it off, and couldn't see how to work the clip holding it on.

Push on only one side of the white piece of the clip and it move over to release the fitting.

I encountered the same issue with my 07 AV. With the help of the FORUM and some additional research I fixed it with new updated parts. Bought online for total of $60 - both parts including shipping. Took me about 30 minutes. Be sure to drop the spare tire.
To clarify the part numbers you need are: AC DELCO
Vent #20995472 - $33
Harness #19257603 $16

Saved myself quite a bit of money. Guessing the dealer would have nailed me for $150 parts and $150 labor = $300

After reading this thread, I realized that I ordered the wrong part. I got the purge solenoid. I got the P0449 on my '07 yesterday after the truck sat for about 12 days. Weird.

Thanks to those that posted the part numbers. I almost ordered the entire canister w/ vent assembly for $150. Doesn't look like that's necessary?

It looks like the prices Wes posted are gmpartsdirect prices.

I got the P0449 code i have a 2005 Chevy AV 1500 what all do i need to change out and where is it location?

Bogator...

I have the same truck.  The part is just infront of the spare tire.  Call the dealer with your VIN #.

Get the "EVAP VENT SOLINOID"  its about 35 bucks.  They will have plenty on hand.

You DO NOT have to drop the spare tire.  And it will take you longer to jack the truck up then to change the part.  Then get the check engine light turned off and your done.

I just did this on my '07. The '07+ procedure is different than the older trucks and requires the parts listed in the TSB, mainly a new valve and pigtail connector. The parts were ~$71 shipped from gmpartsdirect. The kit comes with a new hose to go to the charcoal canister as well as a revised vent and hose that you install on the fuel filler housing. The TSB instructions were perfect. You have to remove the spare tire in order to do the work.

The only frustrating thing was that GM provides you with zip ties, which is nice but I have thousands of them on-hand. What I don't have, and what they don't provide in the kit, is the stupid little push-pin to secure the vent to the fuel filler housing. I found an old inner fender retainer that worked, but it would be nice if they tossed in that push pin.

Thanks for the info.  Purchased the kit and installed in less then an hour.  Very simple to do.  When you purchase the kit from Chevy have them print out the TSB for you.  It has step by step instructions.  Pull one battery terminal before you start work.  Once connected back after work complete the light goes away.

My check engine light came on with this code whe my vehicle got shipped from Hawaii to Virginia.  It at on the ship for about 2 weeks and the battery went dead.  It is a 2007 Avy LS with only 40000 miles on it.  This went out also when it was under warranty at about 26k miles as well.  I ordered the part Vent #20995472 which came attached with two hose.  I was able to take the old one off to compare with the new one.  They were substantially different from each other, and the new one would not fit properly.  I could not get th new one to fit on the bracket it came with without it rubbing the support beam.  Everyone else seems to be changing this like a peice of cake.  Am I missing something and did anyone else have this issue or did it fit right in?  Please advise I have been driving with this code for the last 3 thousand miles and don't like it.

I am having the same issue. I don't have to take off the spare tire or jack it up. I just can't get the solenoid to come off  ???

My Avy sat for a week in last weeks 0 degree temps and the code came up. I removed the battery cable for 20 minutes and it went away. No guarantees, but worth the time to try it....

It takes a predetermined number of failures and a very specific set of parameters for the test to be performed before Illuminating the Malfunction Indicator lamp.
Keep your fingers crossed, but don't be surprised if it returns.

I heat that. Things that seem to be to good to be true usually are. At least the Remote start is working for the time being...

Needing Help here, after completing this Vent Solenoid and Harness on my 07, I still cannot figure out why when filling up or just putting a few gallons of gas in the tank, the AVY will not start until you try starting after three times, you go to start it and just cranks the engine over even shutting off the key it keeps going then stops, then you turn the key over again the second times it does the same thing, the third time you go to start it cranks then it sounds like it struggling and the it start? Could it be the fuel pump? Just looking for ideals

Quick bump to say THANKS to everyone on this issue.  This thread saved me quite a bit of money.  I have a '05 that threw the p0449 code.  Local dealership charged me $33.00 for a new solenoid (GM part # 25932571) and I had it swapped out in no time at all.

A couple of observations:
1.  The clip holding the hose to solenoid was a somewhat of a challenge.  I figured out I was being too easy with it.  It released when I put a lot more pressure on it.
2.  The CEL light didn't clear immediately even though I disconnected the battery for an hour and a half.  It did clear after 3-4 ignition cycles.  I don't know if it cleared due to a certain number of ignition cycles or after a much longer drive that required the solenoid to actually power on.  Either way, all codes cleared.

Again, THANKS to everyone for the help!

I'm having the same exact issue with my 07 av. Can anybody offer any suggestions as to which part to start with? solenoid? canister?

thanks

Pulling Out,

Mine is finally fixed as far as putting gas in it, I replaced the Vent Solenoid and Harness above the spare tire, still frustrated I ordered this ACDELCO Part # 2142142 Evaporative Emission Canister PURGE SOL $15.75 plus shipping. this is located on the drivers side of the engine, unplug the electrical and then the purge hose, remove and plug new one in. Started it up and drove it to the gas station, put three gallons in it, guess what it started right up could not
believe it, drove it twenty miles then top off the tank full it started right up and has ever since.
This is everything I bought

Amazon
ACDelco 20995472 Evaporative Emission Canister Ventilator Assembly $40.19
ACDelco 19257603 Evaporative Emission Canister Valve Solenoid Jumper Wiring..$15.88
ACDelco GT295 Fuel Tank Cap $16.94

Rock Auto
ACDELCO Part # 2142142 Evaporative Emission Canister PURGE SOL $15.75

I can confirm that AC-Delco part#214-2149, is GM part #25932571(same part that is on 2003-13 Suburbans (I actually bought it at the dealership for $32, but could have bought online for ~$16).  Though this part is listed as not the correct part for my 2007 Avalanche 5.3L It plugged right in with no need for an adapter, and it fits the existing mount.  I erased code P0449 by undoing the battery and it has not returned.  I confirmed that the existing vent solenoid was dead. (Dealership had installed it at 60,000mls, I am now at 120,000 mls)   This new part does not have the long vent tube, and honestly on my vehicle, driven on some muddy roads, the vent up by the gas fill is a terrible spot that gets tons of debris, where as with no vent tube it is hidden up behind the spare which had no mud or debris, and seems like the better location. I cut the tube from the charcoal canister off at the solenoid because it cannot be pulled off. This tube is where you will need (2) hose clamps and 3" of 5/8" tube to attach the new part.  To remove the vent tube from the existing solenoid, squeeze the black tabs with your fingers and pull like hell as you twist. I just left that disconnected vent tube tucked up in the frame.

Dealership wanted $93 for the new assembly (and would only sell the assembly), and I would have still had to buy an adapter from them also!  They claimed to have no idea that someone could simply use the $32 part for a Suburban. This Suburban part will I'm sure work on all Silverado's up through 2013 also.
