Hey guys,

This is for all you guys with painted cladding. How is the paint holding up. Has anyone had any flaking, peeling, cracking, etc... Are you happy it is painted? Inquiring minds want to know.

I saw an Av last week with painted cladding and it looked sharp, so naturally I am considering it. I mean I love the look I have now, I have the Sage Green because I have a North Face, and I love the color, I am not sure how it would look with the Cladding painted.

Thanks
dvc

I had mine painted about 8 weeks ago ,went to a car
wash many times and no problems yet

I've got 3500 miles on my AV. The painted cladding is holding up great. No chips. No cracks. No fading. No peeling or bubbles. As a matter of fact., I have more scratches and chips in standard stock paint on the truck. I examine it very closely every time I wash it looking for such damage. Even in the area of the wheel wells were all the dirt, rocks and crud gets thrown looks good. No regrets so far! ;D

Good Question, i get asked that alot. I have had my painted since last septemeber, over 13,000 miles, been in sand numerous times. I have no chips nor peeling even onthe underside of the wheel trim area. Though i do have one scratch from (a belt buckle probably) from some freakin person trying to get close to my truck and look inside. :8:

Hi,

?When you all go to the paint shop what exactly do you say? ?What paint terminology do you use for them to understand that you want strong enough paint to hold on to the cladding and to have a smooth finish (compared to the rough exterior of the cladding)? ?

One last question, did they have to pull out the cladding to paint it on the sides and top/buttom?

Thanks,
Rolando

I have had my Av since June of 01. I am just now beginning to make some changes. I went to the body shop today to see about having the cladding painted. The guy took one look at it and said "no way, won't stick." I think to myself "I've seen pictures of them done, they paint them on the Caddy EXT (assuming it's the same material), and they make primer for plastics, WHY THE HELL CAN'T THEY PAINT MY FREAKIN CLADDING??!!!?" I didn't show them that I was pissed. I still want to paint it though. I just ordered a set of silver metallic decals for the emblems on the doors.

Anyone know what it takes to paint this stuff? I've seen plastic primer, but will it work? I don't mind keeping the textured surface as long as it doesn't effect the paint sticking. I have the resources to do it myself, but would rather pay a pro.

I posted some info on a product called vinylkote as a reply to another post: "Saw dealer price on painted cladding!!!!" I emailed the company and they are sending some sample product of Bumperkote(they thought it would work better) to test. It's a dye and not a paint. Keeps the original texture and says it will not peel, chip or crack. Can be ordered in any custom color. I will try it out on a piece and let you know how it goes.

The vinylkote sounds like it has real possibilities. How is the coverage and how much $ to dye a full set of cladding?

Supposed to have shipped to me yesterday from Canada. Might take a while if shipped UPS. Is there any truth to what I've heard about the 2003 cladding changing to a dark charcoal color? If so, I might go this way. What do you guys think of painting the flared metal fender area to match the cladding?

Someone posted a photoshop massaged picture of just that idea and it looked good. Here is a real one;

I wondered about a dye process when all the talk was going on about painting the cladding. It seemed odd to put paint on a surface that in theory was to be a protection for the truck in areas that take abuse. Now a dye makes sense...it could be touched up without much trouble. It would seem to be limited in colors though. I am not interested in changing it now but in a few years it might be nice to change the look. Man...this sight is crammed full of good ideas!

If we're talking about dyes and custom colors, we could do like the high-schoolers did a while back with their hair dye -- use Jello.

Get all the colors of the rainbow, washes out in a few days. :0:

For those of you inquiring about the painting of the cladding on the Av. I saw a white one at a dealership near me, the salesman directed me to Mariah Conversions close by. I paid them a visit and the explained the process involved and quoted me a price of $1500. The informed me that they worked closely with DuPont Paint supplier to come up with a special urethane based primer to stick to the cladding after the texture was been sanded smooth. THey said for them to do it it would take about two weeks. I used to have a bdy shope and will tackle this task on my own, but I plan to remove the clad pieces off one at a time including the brush guard and prepare and paint them off the truck.

Hi, Offer what I can on this topic
I had most of the cladding painted. I left the read bumper and the very center of the front bumper without paint. In about 2 months I will be putting a 3M clear coat product on the front end that will protect from paint chips.
THe cost for mine as about 1800 USD. They did a very nice job.
Took some pieces off and left some on. Need to have replacement clips on hand to get the pieces back on.
In my case thet sanded lightly (prevent burring) primed, sanded, primed, sanded, light prime and then painted.

I hope to post a picture somewhere, somehow on the weekend.

Hey , everyone i use the ppg product and the stuff you want to use is K36 with K201 and i put some DX814 flex and it works great on my sunset orange two tone body color.
