Painted Engine Covers.

This may be a dumb question but this process seems to take a few days to complete. Do you just drive with the cover off during this time? ???

I can't see any problems with this but I want to make sure.

Thanks,

Joe

AWSSOME, Really AWSSOME a good idea is to present it in different colors so I'LL be visitting you so U can try with a light pewter metalic, it should look as hot as yours. don't worry about the cost I won't charge you a dime I'LL let you do it for free.
Great job.

How about a price of a black cover with an Evil RED mid-evil dragon on it (y)

a couple of answers:

#1 Yes, it took about a week to paint mine (prep, and waiting to dry between coats). ?The engine cover is only there to make the engine area look nicer. ?No real function to it.

battery cover was also off. ?this actually protects the engine fuse box. ?But, since it hasn't rained here since june, I wasn't worried about driving around without it.

#2 ?I don't do airbrushing, so something as complicated as a dragon is way out of the question. ?Although I have done airbrushing in the past, and I am ok at it, I wouldn't trust my talents enough to charge for them(and no I am not doing any for free ?;D)

#3 ?I will seriously have to consider what the painting would cost for me to do it, with time and material involved, maybe work out some schemes with set prices to choose from... ?but, I really don't know about this... ?I don't want all my free time bogged down painting engine covers.

Keep in mind, that if I do offer this up, the items I paint have to be typical pinstriping type patterns of some sort. ?Complicated graphics like animals are out of the question. ?Scenery is possible, but I haven't tried any yet. ?

spork_av how much would you charge to paint my vortec cover LT Pewter with the same color flames I am willing to pay for Fine Art work like that (Leonardo da Vinci's has nothing on you buddy)

thanks, but I still haven't decided if I want to spend my free time painting other people's engine covers. I will decide shortly.

spork,

first great job on the painting. second, i know this is a little off topic, but do i see clear air intake houseing, and tubeing? if so where did you get it? thanks.

thanks alot!

man i cant wait to get started fixing my baby up.... just got it yesterday! thanks again for the help!

I've seen a couple pictures of people who have painted the engine cover and fuse box cover.

What kind of paint should be used?

What preperations did you perform prior to painting?

Thanks....

Hey Avalanche Rookie, I'm moving this thread over into the existing one on this topic... you will find all your questions are answered in there.

Skidd 7;)

You can use Krylon paint which is available at Wal-Mart. You will need 4-7 coats so let it dry at least 2 hours between coats. Last coat should be clear coat. If you take a q-tip and spread vaseline over the name or parts you do not want paint on before spraying, you can just wipe it off when project painting is finished. Paint is less than $3.00 a can and engine heat will not bother it. Just buy high quality paint.

Been seeing a commercial for a new spray paint that forms a molecular bond to the plastic? Anyone work with this stuff yet? Does it really work? They say no sanding though I am sure it is still important to get surface impurities off.

Finally got around to painting mine...

Silver Metallic surrounding a homemade SOM splashed Vortec Logo.

That would be Krylon Fusions. I've painted our plastic (resin) patio furniture and it came out pretty nice. The nozzle has a much wider spray pattern than other rattle can paints. Seems easier to get a smooth coat. It does bond better than the paint on one chair I mistakenly painted with regular Krylon did. These engine parts were done with Fusions.

I want to paint the engine cover on the Av LPM or close to the color, but not silver.

If anyone painted their engine cover ranging from LPM to Silver, please post some pics. :)

Thanks

Full process on the above thread . I love it and was not hard just time consuming . Trying to convince Fox to let me do hers next but she doesnt really care for the painted look . Since she never looks under there !

I did everything at one which made it easy . I also did the fuse center .

I really like that! Looks great.
I may need to try that this weekend. Did you just "tape" off the stripes and "Vortex"?

No the stripes are silver so I think he painted them black.

On mine it was black . I tapped it off then after the primer and white paint I clear coated everything a few times .

Unfortunately (for me anyway) there are no metallic colors in Fusions. The closest to LPM that I've seen so far, at least in the stores, is River Rock. I have one can to try but haven't as of yet.

Here is mine:

Primer

Ridges painted mettalic grey and taped (also had "vortec" painted and covered but I didnt like the solid grey so i retaped later over just the "vortec" logo)

Finished cover (finally after about 4 coats of primer, 3 coats of dark grey, and 4 coats of silver, with about 3 coats of clear)
