I bought these door handles from a member here, and want to paint them a different color to match my truck. I currently have the textured ones, and didn't want to spend time sanding them smooth. Does any one know what kind of prep would be needed to get these ready to paint?

This is probably a question for Blackcomb since he is in the business.

But I would just sand them a bit (not smooth them) to give the primer something to bite into then prime, paint and clear coat. Since it's a part that you are going to handle a lot you may need a lot of clear coats.

I'm curious by the mention of the term Textured. I don't recall having seen door handles described as such in all of my years on this forum.

This is just a few of the many posts on textured door handles.

Thanks for the links. I missed this at the time and can't say I've ever observed then on any vehicles at the GTG's I've attended.

Took one of the handles apart and scuffed it up pretty good with a scuff pad. That took the clear coat shine off of them. Wondering if I could just put a couple coats of paint on them without primer. I guess no one has ever done this before...not many replies.

I would put primer on it.

I would start with lots of paint prep since it probably has years of oils from people putting their hands on it.

Then the high build primer (3 coats) with wet sanding between coats. Paint it then at least 3 heavy coats of clear.

Since it's going to be handled allot it needs a lot of protection.
