anyone else have problems with the strength of their parking brakes. i use them all the time when parking and only press them in 1/4 to half ways on flat lands.

on drive ways with inclines or streets with some type of incline, my brakes are almost usless :p. do i need to replace the cable? i took it in to the dealer once, and they said that they adjusted it, but soon after they started to suck again :(.

it is just mine? i heard that the siverado's had adjustable ones, is this true? are ours the same?
??? ??? ???
help!

I don't normally use my parking brake but when I do, the thing goes to the floor. It does not even feel like it is really doing much.

My parking brake works. No issues - holds like a son of a gun. Here is how to test if there is something wrong with your brake. Set it on flat pavement, put it in gear, give it SOME gas (not WOT) if the brake holds it's doing its job. If 25% to 33% throttle gets the truck to move forward - there is something wrong and its time to see the dealer.

This is the test for vehicle inspection when they test your parking brake (that is when you get your inspection sticker). Set brake, give it gas in gear, if it strains to go forward but the brake holds, pass. Lurches forward, fails.

Keep us posted...

I haven't seen parking brakes on any vehicle that weren't adjustable. How do your rear brake pads look? If your pads are good the dealer should be able to adjust the tension on the cable. It's highly unlikely that the cable is bad already. I've changed them before but that's been on vehicles with over a hundred thousand miles on them. I hope you get it fixed. I personally don't like having all the weight of my truck pushing on the transmission if I'm on a hill.

Mine work fine but it is flat land here.

The pedal does feel mushy and has the same force to fully depress it.

One of my first warranty issues was the parking brake. My petal went almost to the floor. The truck came back with it per spec. They tested it in drive and stopped facing downhill. The brake held in both cases. I?m used to the petal going only partway down. Must be a Chevy thing. I'm waiting for the replacement midgate gasket to come in (small leak at the top, passenger side) and I'll check other AV's on the lot.

If I remember correctly, the parking brake adjustment is right under the driver?s seat on the outside of the truck. Standard bolt adjustment.

cool, thanks guys...

i definitely try the test to see where i stand, as well as check my rear pads. i did see the cable adjustment; it runs right along the frame, maybe i try that as well.

i'll post again as soon as i get a chance to check...

;D ;D ;D

Check with the dealer but................

There is a set of shoes inside the rear rotor that is your parking brake. You have to take the rotor off to adjust. Real pain.

Somebody on this board must be a GM certified mechanic. Lend some help......

Trophyman.

Mine also feels mushy and goes to the floor but I park it on a pretty steep driveway and it hold while the truck is in neutral ;)

Well, after pulling up to the post office to drop off some bills in the mail,i tried to apply my parking brake before taking out of gear since I was parked on a steep downhill incline.I did this so I wouldn't get the tranny in a bind when releasing the foot brake after putting in park. To my surprise,I had no parking brake. It just went to the floor without any resistance at all. The brake light in the dash then started to flash. GREAT! No I have to take my 3 week old baby back to the dealer for something that should have been checked out before it left the lot. I thought dealers had a check list that they performed on new arriving vehicles. Guess they missed something.I know it will be taken care of,but it's just a pain to have to schedule an appointment for something that should work in the 1st place. All new owners beware and check their parking brakes for correct operation.Mine has a build date of 5/02. Thats enough ranting for me,just wanted to warn others of this just in case.

Are you sure there really is a problem? Mine goes to the floor but there is a little resistance. I think this is related to having disc brakes in the rear. The blinking light I believe means that the emergency brake is on. It flashes to make sure you see it. I know mine works, I pushed it to the floor then put it in reverse and there was definetly quite a bit of resistance there.

For the first time I tried my parking brake and YEP....it went to the floor. I had resistance, but nothing like my other vehicles. Gonna go see the dealership tommarow and see what they have to say.

I had this problem

The brake will go to the floor without a lot of resistance - the key is to try it on an incline with your truck in neutral.

Mine didn't hold at all - the dealer adjusted it and said it had to come from the factory like this :(

Even after mine was fixed, there is not a lot of resistance.

My Av is like this too. My 99 Sierra was the same way. Both have rear discs. The dealer wanted to charge me for adjusting the brakes. ?On the Sierra the dealer said ?this was not a warranty issue. I was not paying to have them adjusted ,cause I rarely use them. Haven't had time to complain about it on the Av.but I suspect I will get the same story since I have 24K on it.

noticing a possible trend here? Time to start a "things to check before I leave the dealer with new Av" list.

Hey, BLKJACK          !!!!!

It's almost too early to see that. If that happens to be your wife or sister or something, please disregard and accept my sincere apology :-X

Just got back from the dealership and disscussed the parking brake issue.

They said we have the same parking brake setup as the Corvette. It is a secondary small set of pads on our rear disc's. That is the reason for the "no resistance" feel. However, if your vehicle is not being held by the brakes, then they do need adjusting.

RichUF. No appologies necessary. That's Dorothy Straton aka "Star 80"(Mariel Hemingway movie). A lot of dead people have their own web sites but I don't know why ???

I missed this earlier today. I need to start checking the attachments over here more often. Did you need help or something with the PIC BLKJACK? You didn't mention anything about it in your message?

Oh! ?Definitely helpful. ?I just don't understand how they relate to your posts sometimes. ?I am learning and will figure it out eventually ?;D ?

Now, if the babe was leaning on your AV that I would understand >:D

:6:I had the same problem on my 2001 yukon. My emergency brakes would not hold it on an incline. I would push the brake down put it in park and it would still roll back. My mechanic that i use has always been pretty honest and said the pads were so small that if you put it in gear a few times and started to drive off and oh i forgot to release the brake it would wear them down super quick and according to him there was hardly any adjustment if any. and is very costly to replace........more time consuming i think,,,,,labor at 60.00's an hour adds up........My AV is holding up good, but i have been super careful not to put it in gear until i have pressed brakes and put it in gear and then release.....
zeeya .02 worth.........

I got my parking brake fixed today and tested it, it is fixed all-right I could park the Avalanche on a wall well mabe not a wall but a step hill. ;D

My Avalanche's parking brake doesn't seem to work at all and I took it back to the dealership and they said that it was perfectly normal although i still occasionally drive with it on and can't tell at all till it starts chiming at me.

The AVY park brake is funny that it has no feel to the pedal but it does work....I put my brake on and then put the truck in Drive and it did not move....

I guess the design of the brake mechanism is different then older vehicles where they used a cable attached to rear brake drums so you could feel resistance in the pedal....
