Parking park Brake problems no hold slip etc

Somehow I missed your post when I started my search. ?I just got a call from my dealer and he told me the same thing as your post. ?He also told me the charge was 124 bucks!! ?To adjust a freakin' parking brake? ?According to him you have to pull both rear wheels off to accomplish this apparent monumental service. ?They're going to do this one for free this time, knowing I'll give them a great evaluation on their survey.

Does this sound right to you?

The dealer thinks pulling a couple of wheels is a big thing? Many chain-stores will pull all four to give you a free brake inspection. What are they going to do after the wheels are pulled?

Beats me. But I can forsee an Av service manual in my future. Need to learn about any other little "improvements" GM made. Not to mention I'd really like to see a schematic of this parking brake setup. I'm gonna crawl under my beast later this afternoon just to snoop around.

I just got my AV back from the dealer, fixed. They replaced the rear parking break assembly unit. Take it in...GM has a fix.

Same here. Took mine in yesterday and picked up today. They told me I had a leaking axle seal. He is what the put on the ticket.

"Shoes worn/axle seal leaking. Left rear axle seal leaking. Replace axle seal and worn pads and revised clips."

These new clips should keep the shoes straight and get better wear on the shoes.

Here is the part # for the spring kit/clip 88982879

Hope this helps everyone :B:

Are we talking about the 1500's exclusive on this? My 2500 seems to have a pretty solid E-Brake, but if there is a problem, rather get it fixed now than when it becomes problematic..

openminds-

My service guy told me that it was for both the 1500 Z66 and the Z71. It wouldn?t hurt to check it out.

I had to have my parking brake pads replaced at 30K miles. (warranty under the 30K service). The dealer tried to tell me that I also drove with the brake engaged. I told him what he could do with it! I do most of my driving at night and #1 the headlights dont work if the parking brake is engaged and #2 I would notice the red light on the dash. I won that argument. maybe I should print out this thread and give it to him. I have never owned a vehicle where the front pads outlasted the rear pads and I have owned three cars with rear disc brakes.

When I was putting my new radio in today - I had to move the Shifter from park to neutral to get the radio in. To my surprise my truck started rolling backwards down the drive way!!! As I tried to press the parking break I was more startled to discover that it was already all the way down!

Yes... I got the truck stopped before I hit something! But this sounds like it should be a factory recall!!!! Rather than a take it to your dealer and hope he knows about the fix and won't charge you thing.

OK guys,
Here is what I got from my dealer yesterday:
My brake shoes were worn out and replaced, and have had my cable adjusted twice. The reason the shoes wore out was that if you take off the wheel, removed the caliper, pull off the drum, you will see that the shoes tilt forward at about a 15 degree angle. As the cable stretches over time, the shoes loosen up and have a tendacy to lean forward, thereby rubbing while normal driving. To fix this, it is advise that you adjust the shoes by turning a star shaped knob so that the shoes sit correctly with the brake released.

This looks like the fix for rear drum brakes. What about those of us that have rear discs?

Jimmy, F.Y.I all AV's have combination rear disc/drum brakes. The drum part is the parking brake and the disc is for stopping. It is a similar design used on the corvette for years.
According to my dealer the parking brake should be inspected and adjusted every 15,000 miles to get optimum performance and wear.

Dave, thanks for the clarification.

I guess I will be pulling the back wheels off this weekend to have a look ;D

I took my wife's '01 Tahoe in today for a few minor warranty items and one happened to be the dreaded "no parking brake". The service dept. called and told me it would cost me $150.00 to have the parking brake adjusted. :8: I told them to forget it. :9: I'd figure out how to do it myself. I was extremely pissed since, in the past year and a half, I bought over $80K worth of new trucks from this dealer ('01Tahoe & '02 AV) :p

When they called to tell me to pick up the truck, the service advisor said they looked at my records and realized I'm a pretty valuable customer. :-* (5 vehicles in 7 years) So, they adjusted the parking brake for a one time good will token. ;D He further explained that they can only be adjusted under normal warranty under 10K miles. We've got 16K on the Tahoe. I haven't noticed my AV parking brake failing yet. I wonder if I'll get a one time freebee when it's time for an adjustment? ???

Truckman :B:

I haven't used the parking brake but a couple of times myself, but it seemed to work fine......then again I never park on steep inclines or anything.....hope it doesn't happen to me, I am SICK of any kind of auto shops anymore

Not sure if it's a 1500 series thing, but my 2500 Series Avalanche's parking brake is ROCK SOLID! Can't drive away with this baby set!

Anyone else with a 2500 series besides "openminds" and myself can confirm or deny the power of the 2500's parking brake?

My '02 2500 will not budge with the parking brake on. ;) ?I was quite surprised the first time I tried to drive off with the P-brake engaged.

The problems back! ? ?:8:

I had it fixed a while ago (17200 miles) and now it is doing the same thing?..only 9000 added, and the brake will not hold on a hill?

...and today the ?:7: darn thing stuck and would not release until I gave it some gas?

The shop had it all day and came up blank. ?I have to take it back in on Monday so the can do more troubleshooting.

I stepped on my parking brake last week and it went to the floor. I put my AV in drive and it started to move just like when the parking brake was off :8: I took it to the dealer today and they put new 'parking brake shoes' and the new GM brake clips. Cost was covered under warranty since I just turned 20,000 miles. Dealer stated the brakes should last longer now with the new clips. ;D 2002 AV Z71 1500

My pedal also has little resistance and I had never thought much about it.
:)After reading all these posts, I went out to my AV and started it up. Left the parking brake on and put it in drive. My driveway is on a hill. It held. I gave it some gas, the parking brake held.

just got in from doing my own test of this system after
my wife went to have it inspected today and it failed. due to the parking brake not holding under acellarator pressure. it does hold on an incline and will stop the truck at a 20 mph roll . how mutch does it need to pass ?
the pedal does go to the floor with little resistance I decided to come in to read if any one else had this problem. wow! to my disapointment I will be taking it in for the mod to the clips. I need to reade over thease post more often. thanks to all that post here blackthree4me

I am having the same problems with mine, I will be bringing it into the dealer soon to have it fixed. This morning it went to the floor and then wouldn't release.
