Just bought my 2nd AV 3 weeks ago. Red Z71 03. My first was a blue 02. I started a post about 6 months ago about a problem with the pass seatbelt locking. I just got done reading all the post. I am having this problem with the new AV. I know that is it is what the belt is desinged to do. I was just wondering if anyone had anyting to add to this. The new AV has airbag sensing for the front passanger, but this only dissables the airbag not the belt locking "saftey feature". At least it does not in mine. Maybe it should??? I still would like to deactive this if anyone can help!!! :E:

locking as in pulling back? I dont think they use "gears" any more... you have a sensing air bag? Im failing to see why you need to turn the 'locking' thing off...

Sorry AV_2500 I guess I knew what I ment but did not explain what I ment very well. When you sit in the pass seat in the winter with your coat on the belt locks like you had just hit the brakes. Then it will not let go w/o fully retracting. This is by design when the belt is fully extended. Like I said this happens a lot with your coat on in the winter unless you weight 120 lbs. This is very annoying!!! I hope I explained it better. I just want it to stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The key word was, "when you sit in with your coat on". I've had many different people in my passenger seat and it only happens with larger people. My 2000 Silverado did the same thing. It happens to me everynow and then when I have my coat on. But when there is a large person in the passenger seat, whether they have a coat on or not, it happens. But it doesn't happen in the drivers seat. I don't know why this happens, but I just know it does.

The front passenger seat is designed to do that to provide an anchor for a child saftey seat. As sparky stated, this system gets activated when you extend the seat belt all the way out.

I guess its possible to have a defective retractor. I would try to be real careful to not extend it all the way if possible. I'm a large fellow myself so I know what you mean about the annoyance. I do believe GM will offer you a free seatbelt extender if it is nessessary.

The drivers side is not designed as such 'cause there is no need for a child restraint in that position. (unless you live in Newfoundland, sorry Yak. >:D)

thanks everyone for the responce. I know that it is designed to do this. But it sill is very anoying. We are very carefull putting it on and we do not extend it all the way. It ususally happens when you lean forward to reach for someting. I have it happen when i reach for the radio. My wife has it happen when she reaches for her purse. I wonder why this is not deactivated when the airbag is deactivated?? It knows that an adult is in the front seat and you sure dont need this feature then!! I guess we will be going to the dealer to get the belt extender...

It does not have to be quite all the way out to cause this safety feature to engage. It has to be close, but not quite all the way extended before you buckle it. My soulation was to go to the dealer parts dept and request a seat belt extender. They come in 9" and 13" and are free! I liked it so well I also put one on the drivers side. It makes the shoulder strap ride just a little lower across your shoulder and was more comfortable for me.
