Pics Of My Smoking Av

Hi. this is my first post,so be kind. My AV used a qt. of oil in 3000 mi. after I bought it. Mine was a dealer demo. I've been fixing cars for most of my life, and have my own shop, the dealer know's this. I told them to replace the valve stem seals . They did this after wittnessing smoke after sitting all night, they also change PCV valve. Since then no smoke, no oil consumption now at 12+ miles. They said they were't having valve stem seal problems, but fixed it anyway. Could be because the knew I had my own shop, and the knowledge to back up my claim ? good luck with your dealers.

As reported by others here, my Av was using oil, especially after sitting overnight after a road trip. I took it to O'Reily Chevrolet here in Tucson and they replaced the valve seals, no questions asked. No "oil consumption test" BS or anything else... just fixed the problem. I'm forced to revise my (previously not very nice) opinion about dealers... they listened to exactly what I said and did exactly what needed to be done... in one day.

Well, I am going to brave my first trek to the dealership for this. I have only seen mine smoke a couple times and have no consumption issues, but I know it shouldn't smoke nor should my new stainless Magnaflow tip be black near the condensation hole. Since I will be taking her straight from Minneapolis to just south of Waco (near Temple) TX around Christmas time, I'd like to know this has been taken care of. The service guy I spoke to wrote down the TSB # quoted from earlier in this post, 01-06-01-029.

Bowtie, I'll let you know how well Grossman handles my first, albeit nervous, service call.

My avalanche was using a quart in less than 1000 mi. Lots of smoke at start-up after a highway drive then a long sit. Dealer started oil consumption test and I was not happy. When I went to pick up my replacement rear window due to a cracked frame, the service manager said, hey guess what, we received a notice on the PCV valve. They replaced it; no more smoke, no more oil use! I was :8: that they were trying to tell me that it may be normal prior to the notice from Detroit. I love the truck but I have been to the dealer 4 times in the first 6 month with it. That is not what I expect with a new unit. But I should have known, I purchased a new S-10 Blazer in 1983, first year model GM....not a trouble free truck. The Av is 1000 times better out of the box than the 2.8 V-6, S-10 was!

Well, I had the PCV valve replaced today. I called them Friday, quoted the TSB # and they said no problem. When talking to the service rep, I paraphrased the TSB and he said no problem. They got to it fairly quickly and within about 45 minutes, I was back to work.

I'll keep an eye on it.

I just found this site! Wish it would have been sooner. I'm sure it would have saved alot of hassel with my dealer. Same problem everyone else has had. Mine went to the point of check oil light lighting up. I went through the same thing you guys have goon through. After 17K they changed the PVC because of the same problem with the 8100. Now after 28K no smoke or oil usage!!!!
During this time I have added K&N filter, ceramic headers, chip and gibson cat-back. The 5.3 needed the extra help! Has anybody done anymore like larger throttle body or cam? Or run straight off the cats only?

After numerous posts they are now starting to reflect
dealers not putting up such a front on the subject.

At first it was all in the owners head. If one still goes
in without a TSB and print out from this site, they will
probably still lie claiming never heard of such a thing.

Its not just GM but Ford and Chrysler too. Guess that's
why you should consider buying a foreign make which
many are manufactured in the US. Saw a post where
about all of our so call domestic line are produced
outside the us and shipped back.

Put about 500 miles on so far and no smoking. The dealer was great on this one. They knew the TSB existed and changed it no questions asked. As mentioned, just be sure to at least be able to rattle off the TSB number. Having the printout certainly can't hurt.

I have an 02 north face and I had the smoke problem here and there upon startup. Now, I had the pcv valve replaced a couple weeks ago, and no problems upon startup that I have noticed. It is cold here in NJ now, so the smoke could be condesation right now.

But, I have noticed large "diesel-like" smoking coming out of my exhaust when I look in my mirros, through my 5% tinted black windows. If I get on the gas really hard from a stop, at the peak of 1st gear, she smokes like an old city bus. Is this normal, and should the pcv valve have fixed this??

FYI- another characetristic of a bad pcv valve is if you get the check engine oil light in the display and the oil level is good, then you know your pcv valve is bad. Ask for the one with the small hole in it. I just don't know about this smoking while under power problem I am seeing---any help??
