I have some pinging and have a UPD with K&N filter as well as the Corsa Exhaust...is this normal...I don't recall ever hearing this before on my '02 (have had it since June/'02) and I hear it under part throttle with a slight load on the trans gearwise (not pulling a load)
Has the UPD leaned out the mixture to give me ping???
Has the "less expensive" gas I have been buying a Sam's Club over the last couple of months given me the ping?
I see some black soot on the tailpipes of my Corsa Exhaust but this has been the case for the few months I have had the exhaust on.
I currently have under 8 thousand miles on my Avy and no other performance options.
Thanks,
Bill

I did a search and fopund a lot on "pinging" but nothing I could find answered this for me.

I think Pinging is not related.....as the engine uses the cpomputer to adjust timing and stuff.....

Maybe reset the ECM by disconnecting the battery for 5-15 mins....and then driving as normal.....

This way it relearns what the engine needs per your driving.....

Now I am really confused...I disconnected the battery and checked all the connections...I have had the UPD on since the summer of '02 but never really noticed this pinging and it was only sometimes and usually only under part throttle with a load on the engine...
Today, I noticed the seal for the aircleaner base into the fender was open to the outside air... :0: ahhhhh...could this be it???
I secured it down...reconnected the battery and went for a ride!
 now it pings under part throttle AND away from stop signs and stop lights... I have never heard it ping this much but just for a bit and then it stops!
Drove for about 20 minutes getting it warmed up and up to speed...still pinging...moreso than before!
Next I came back home and took the UPD off and replaced the original aircleaner but I used the K&N filter...
I immedietly noticed a little loss in SOTP power :C: :8: but...NO PINGING...
I dorve around for another 20 minutes and goosed the engine and tried to make it ping...did it just ping??? I don't think I was able to get it to ping...WHAT's GOING ON HERE???
Saddened because I paid a lot for the UPD...sad becasue I lost some "sound" putting the "regular" stock air cleaner on (kept the K&N for now) and some SOTP power...it seemed to kick down harder with the UPD...it seemed to pull harder with the UPD but it also pinged with the UPD...now it doesn't seem to ping but I have lost the "advantages" of my intake.
Please help!
Bill

I had had some pinging once in a while after a used my Hypertech programer on my 03 2500 & on the 02 1500 I had before.

I will agree with the timing issue too.

Terry

I am gonna move this to performance as it kinda relates more to the UPD then normal stuff.....

So do I eat the cost of the UPD and forget the power increase etc by leaving on the "stock?"
Do I just live live the pinging???
Thanks,
Bill

Wait for REDSHIFT to chime in.....or send him PM

Hi Silversport,

It seems like you have a lot of things going on and a few possible causes.

Have you had a "service engine soon" light come on?? If not, the engine in not running TOO far outside design limits. On Star can tell you what is causing the light if you do trip one.

If there was an intake leak that was causing the problem I would expect it to be between the MAF sensor and the throttle body. I don't think the loose connection in the filter area is the culprit. Check carefully between the MAF and throttle body. This would be air that is getting to the engine without being measured by the MAF.

I had a left open a quarter sized hole in my intake without tripping an SES light.

With the pinging coming and going with the install of filter assemblies, I suspect the intake leak situation.

The other possibility is that it was always there and you weren't hearing it with the stock intake or you were always close to pinging and the mods pushed it over the edge. To check out this possibility I would burn up the 87 octane while running the stock intake. Fill it up with 93 or the best available, Put the UPD back in and leave the computer disconnected overnight. If this works, try 89 to see if the engine can handle that.

Most late model vehicles are tuned for minimum emissions which is on the edge of pinging. My wifes Axiom pings on 87, not on 89. Putting in the UPD and Corsa may have pushed the engine a little closer to the edge.

The soot you see isn't a problem. I see it all the time from mine. I think it's another case of it always being there, just not seen. The free flow exhaust is letting more of it out. You don't want to stand around my tailpipe with white pants when I start up!!

I'm betting on the 89 octane, Just be sure to test first with 90+.

Redshift:
That's why you are the man...I believe this may be the culprit as well...On the way to work today I got...some ping from the stock air cleaner box...
Tomorrow, the UPD goes back on AND I fill up with 93 octane...one of the other changes I had made lately was to the gasoline itself going with the Sam's Club bargain brand...maybe not bad gas but perhaps I need 89 octane or at least a better quality gasoline.
Thanks and I will let you know!
No service Engine light has ever come on that I am aware of...Thanks, again!

*****UPDATE*****

Today, after work, I disconnected the negative terminal and then removed the "stock" airbox again.
I re-installed the UPD...hmmm...it seems to be a better installation the second time...anyway...then off to the gas station...I tried to make it "ping"...it didn't...to be fair, I was not able to recreate everything just so to "make" it ping due to traffic but...so far, no ping.
At the gas station, 93 Octane SuperDuperUnleaded...On the way home...did everything I could to make it ping...it didn't...so far.

Redshift, ygmn, everyone...THANKS for the help and support!!! Maybe now the problem is solved, I can enjoy my UPD intake and Corsa exhaust and get on to more modding!

I will keep you all posted on this as it developes.

Bill ;) :D ;D  :p >:D :B:

Glad it is not pinging...keep us informed...

Today I took the Av to its favorite spot for pinging...I did not hear the ping...perhaps it was the better install of the UPD (I think not) or the added Super Unleaded gas 93 Octane over 87 Octane (possible) but I don't believe I have heard any ping.
I will keep you all posted on this...I posted a much more detailed description of what I did and my findings but it somehow disappeared...
Thanks for all the help and support! :B: (y)

Good job Silversport!

I'm glad you are back running.

It was 19 degrees this morning, the truck loves that cool air!

Well, it's still early but...60 miles and no pinging...
Bill

I saw this thread pop back to the top and I thought 'uh-oh, pinging is back'. I'm glad things are still working.
