Are the power outlets on the dash always hot? Garmin cam plugged into one. Cam turns off as expected when engine turned off, But I’m having battery drain.

2008 LX.
thanks

Yes, I believe both outlets are hot on my 2010. Do you have a voltmeter? it would be a quick test.

Strange that the cam would know to turn off though, perhaps it senses the voltage change?

my phone won’t charge when the engine is off, so I assumed the Garmin cam would shut down which it appears it does. I’m not driving the Avalanche every day. So I replaced an old battery and the new one went dead. The only change has been adding the cam. I still need to pull out the volt meter

Maybe something else is draining battery?

Yea, just not sure. Need to get it in and sort it out. The cam doesn’t make sense. I can’t charge a phone from the same outlet I use the cam in.

Most cameras have a low voltage cut off to save the battery.. Does the Garmin??

The camera will shut down is a few minutes if the car is shut off. But if you use the hard wire kit to the fuse box or battery the camera will come in if it senses movement or contact on the car. Normally if you power through a cigarette lighter the Garmin will shut down completely and you won’t have the contact sensor option, which I don’t need or want.

if the car is shut down and I plug in the cam it will power up. So I’m guessing they run hot.. So if your an avalanche owner I guess you don’t need the hard wire kit. I’m still looking to see if it’s something else.

I hard wired mine but it will stop recording if the battery voltage drops below a set level. I don't remember exactly but somewhere around 11.8 volts I think...

I also have aux/dual batteries and can start with the aux battery if the main battery is low, saved me a few times..

Sorry it’s been awhile. We could not figure what the or where the draw was coming from. Added second battery, no issues so far. We’ll see how that goes

Hey,

Old thread but yes the outlets are always hot. You can use the AUX power box and a jump cable to move them to ignition only if you wanted. (I did that as my Garmin Cam kept draining my 08 AV)
