I found a prebuilt Sub box in Austin Tx.
Extreme Sounds sells this box for ~$100
It will accept either two Large 10" or you *can* fit shallow 12" with a little cutting. They are dual isolated chambers at almost exactally 1 cu. ft. each.

I went with two 10" Alchmey sub's they are rated at .67 cu. ft. and I am thinking I need to either block up the inside or go with 12's as they seem to be in TOO MUCH AIR

I used a Kenwood amp because it is low profile, the clearence is TIGHT on top of the center tunnel, I had to remove the "60" side under seat covers.
The amp also is fan cooled so I had to take the under piece that connects the seatback and front and wedge it under the front plate so as to give a little air room.

Also you cannot use all of the tunnel bridge on the box because the braces "sit" on the box, this amp has only milimeters clearence on either side (note proximity to the impresions on the box)

The height is good and there are little kick panels to keep stuff from getting shoved under the seat into the sub area

With the seats in place it is totally stealth :)

Well, there you have it, in answer to everyones first question, NO, you cannot convert the midgate with this in place. One important note, the reason I cannot is the AMP hits, so if you relocated the amp you *might* be able to pull off coverting with the box in place

I have a little two year old girl, so her car seat with the tether is always in the back seat "lashed down" anyway so if I ever need to convert, removing the box will just add one more step to all the other stuff that has to come out before I can convert. (I am looking into quick connects for the wiring, as I think that would make the process a snap).

Well hope this was helpful, let me know if you have any questions :)

P.s. Since I put this in I cannot wipe the grin off my face >:D
P.p.s. And yes, I keep the volume to sensible levels with my daughter is in the truck ;) Actually she likes the thump in her "lilo and stitch" songs (y)
P.p.p.s. Thanks Chris for the install issist, couldn't have done it without ya ;)

Thanks for the info and great pics! (y) One question though, do you know how deep a sub can be mounted?

Thanks,
lanman1

I did not actually measure it but the alchmey 10" are hovering over the bottom (BTW they routered out the bottom inside piece so it is thinner than the rest of the walls by about 1/4" this allows for more mounting depth.
Also I assume you *could* add a "ring" to the top outside to bring the mount up a bit and still not hit the seats on full excursion.
Give Extreme sounds a call I am sure they know the particulars....

Very nice setup and option for those who want "Boom in the room", but don't mind slowing down the conversion process of the midgate. I like the look! Nice install as well.

Hey man! May 10th I will be in Spartanburg for a wedding. Hope to see you!

Back to this box. Does it fit the 2003's?

Wiki

Cool box I saw one similar at a website called subbox, It fired down though and they wanted 150 for it..I may call these guys tomorrow..OOps later today

Well I don't know if it would fit in a 2003, but when I bought it they did not ask the year and I do not believe the "tunnel" or seat height changed.

Hey lanman what "mods" are you having done to that box ? (I am *thinking* about going with 12" and wondered if that was what was changing??)

Well, I have had the box running about 2 weeks now and I can say I am VERY pleased with the THUMP, I find it interesting that back seat passengers claim the bass is much louder than I hear it just a few inches away, it must have something to do with the speakers firing up or possibily I was looking and noticed the headliner is curved nicely right there and may be acting as a *focus* for the bass. Either way I like the box very much and am convinced if the amp were relocated the midgate would convert with the box in place (not an option for me as the power seats ate up ALL the room under the seats :( )
BTW that kenwood 800W drives those 10"'s almost perfectly, it is a slim and powerfull AMP, I recomend it.
Now all I need to do is replace the paper rear door speaker I blew out yesterday :cautious:

There was a post somewhere else in here that mentioned that subbox.net will have the 2003 available soon.

I will be picking up the subbox 2003 version thru in industry insider...the word I got was that Midgate conversion will be possible with the New subbox. I personally am going to mount both of my amps under the front seats...600x4 for the 4 6.5's and 600x2 for the 10" subs...I am going with DiamondAudio.com for speaks, subs and amps...this is my basic shopping list..may change at any time.

I got this from them today:

i have also received another call from one of the guys on the avalanche boards...do yall ever do group buys or anything like that? ive sourced the same box from a different manufacturer (cross town rivals). so sourcing them isnt a problem...however the shipping i pay for just one box kills me big time...if i could get a groupbuy going with 7-10 folks this could happen very easily. think anyone on yalls board is interested?
thanks

Since my subs only need about .68ft3 each, I am planning on chambering off the center of the box and flushing my amps and power distribution into it.

Cool, a friend of mine suggested the same thing (too much work for me ;) we figured that if done right *should* allow conversion with the box in place, let me know if that's the way it works out for you.... :)

OK, so we're up to 2 or 3 now, c'mon, just a few more and we can all be bass happy. ;D ?The price should be about $115(depending on shipping and taxes if applicable).

Maybe I should start a new thread for the GB? ???

In the mean time, anyone interested, send me a PM.

Lanman.. Which box are you talking about...The one from subbox or the one pictured in this post??? Just curious

Yeh. . . what he said.

If subbox had a 210 or 212 solution that allowed the midgate to still function, completely, I might also be interested.

The one pictured in this post. I don't think my subs would fit in the other one.

so does it sound pretty good under the seats it does not rattle alot or anything i am very interested i mught just re do the carpet on mine and shirk it to .75 cubes

The sound is great!
Strangely the sound is not muffled <sp?> at all.
It is very clear and does not rattle anything (except the dash ;) )
I would reposition the AMP if I could have because I believe it was designed to convert in place without the AMP stuck on top of the box where I had to put it, just adds a level of complexity to converting, ( I have to pull the box out to convert).
So in short I am very pleased, but if you go with this be prepared to change out your head and door speakers, as they OEM's cannot keep up and I blew out the rear door speakers trying

Hope that helped, let me know If I can answer anything else....

:B:
Thanks for the info i have already changed the head unit and the door speakers they are all jl audio/alpine so where would you have mounted the amp..? i have a big amp to try and hide and i also iahe a dvd player to try and hide this should be interesting.....?

DVD is a no brainer, center console (hides it and easy access)
The AMP is a larger problem, I have power seats and so ther is NO room under the seats, that's why I put it where I did.
You *could* mount the AMP to the backs of the seats (there is room, but it would prohibit a flat load floor once converted).
There is also *some* room on the floor ahead of the center console but not much, also you want to keep the AMP close to the larger speakers so that idea is not ideal for subs.
For a large AMP you are kind of limited if you have power seats, if not under the seats is a natural choice....

Good luck and let me know what you end up doing :)
