I have been reading the postings here for the last few weeks and this is a terrific site and community. I've learned a lot and am ready to take the plunge into an Avalanche. I now have a few dealers quoting me and I have been using the prices paid from this site as my guide to compare against.

My target car is a green or blue Z71 with Sunroof and leather/convenience package. Cars list from $38,500 to $39,500. I live in Northern NJ.

The quotes I am getting from the dealers (before $2500 rebate) are in the high $34,800 range. From what I can see on this site people are saying I should be driving the prices to $33,000 and below - before the rebate.

What I am hoping you all can help with is this - given my region can I really gets this car for below $33,000? If I can get it to $34,000 should I jump on it?

From what I have seen, you should be about $1000-$2000 below invoice before rebate. If there are multiple dealers in the area with what you want then you should have no problem getting them to play ball.

Tell them you will not pay more than 33,000....and see how much they want to sell....you never know

As the godfatjer said " Make em Offer they can't refuse" >:D

Whoa guys - wait a minute. Look at what he wants. He's looking for the Z-71, by far the top choice. He wants blue, the number one color or green, one of the rarest colors. And he wants it basically decked out. They aren't building 2002 anymore so the availability is limited.

If it were me, at this stage of the game I'd push for $2K under invoice, but I wouldn't burn bridges. If no dice than I suck it up, take a deep breath, and wait six more weeks for a 2003. Then I take the offer of $34.5 to $35.0 before any rebates or incentives on a brandy new one. You'll get so screwed over on equity is you buy a 2002 this late in the game - the problem you're facing is you're looking for a VERY popular or very rare animal, depending on your color choice. If you're looking for a neutral interior to boot - even rarer...

yea, Tell them you won't pay more than 33,000 out the door. the rebate and such should cover your tax and license.

I live in the glorious state of Texas. I purchased my Z-66 AV three weeks ago. The sticker on it was 32.5k. I paid 26,100. I'm not sure how that rates elsewheres, but I feel I got a good deal. From what I have seen the Z-71 run about 3k more than 2wd. I took a newspaper with me and had all of the ads circled. The ads were all base models, but I told them I would pay for my options if they met that base price.

Thanks folks, especially Chief for the info on the rarity of the vehicle and the difference there. You know I am not 100% sold on any of the colors - my preference is the darker over the lighter ones.

A dealer last night showed me his supposed invoice and it was $35,000. I told him he was too high and was about to leave so he said he'll match the other dealer at $34,800. So he is saying he'll go a few hundred below invoice. But the gang seems to think I should be a few thousand by now especially given Chief's point about 2003 almost here. I mention this to the dealer and get a blank look of course.

I am very tempted to throw the $33,000 at all these guys and just say take it or leave it. However, I don't want to be unreasonable.

Hurry and buy it and become an AVY OWNER  :B:

The lighter colors look cleaner longer than the dark FWIW.

Good Luck and do tell us the outcome!

Update on Search -

Visited another dealer and here's what I was offered.

$35,500 for a Blue Z71 loaded with the Leather, Steps, sunroof, etc...

Told him I had other dealers in the $34s but he didn't want to budge.

I like the blue but I need the dealer to go lower. We'll see....

Shop the around. We even checked out www.costcoauto.com <-- it is Costco's bulk auto sales. You can get a deal there. ?

We went with a dealer though. One with an internet salesperson.

Knowing exactly what you want helps a great deal. ?They can pull the AV off of other dealers lots so don't go with a dealer you don't like just because they have what you want. Our dealer did a 300 mile search found what we wanted (Z71 w/ bench seat and a 4.10 rear) priced it out at $100 over invoice. Ended up paying $33k - not including the $2,500 rebate! ?

Most of the dealing was over the phone. Took just over an hour from walking in the door to evaling our trade-in, signing the papers and driving off in our new AV. ?Best sales experience yet.

We looked over the various colors on the lots and decided we liked the Pewter the best. ?It matched the cladding the closest.

Thanks man! Do you recall the list price? I am finding that the cars listing for $39K+ are being quoted to me as a $35K invoice.

Just joined this board today - and pick up my new AV tomorrow (Tuesday). I, too, got an internet deal at a local dealer with excellent stock (about 15-20). List on my green with Z71 and most options was 38.7 and got it for 31.5 including the rebate. Felt like it was a very good/fair deal and the dealership was very upfront and direct on the price.

Looking forward to some experiences to share. Enjoying the board so far.

Just spoke with my original dealer today. He says that GM is financing for 5yrs at 0%. So the deal is to take the rebate or 0% for 5years. What a deal!

This dealer is also offering me a black Z71 loaded with sunroof and the 4:10 trans for $35,300. He is also taking a trade-in from me as well. This is still far from the prices you guys say I should get - but I think I will take it.

Why? It's brand new to them so it still has wrapper on seat and tape on car. So its never been used by anyone. I also think the dealer is straight-up.

Any last minute warnings before I take the plunge?

DanTheMan, it appears you should take the 0% for 5 years over the $2,500 rebate.
example:
Amount financed w/rebate $30,000
Assumed interest rate of 7%
Payment for 60 months $594.04

Amount finanaced (no Rebate) $32,500
Interest Rate of 0%
Payment for 60 months $541.67

You would have to get the rebate of $2,500 AND an interest rate of about 3.2% for 60 months to equal the 0% deal. 0% for 60 months is too sweet to pass up. Good Luck and welcome to the club.

I stopped by the dealership where we leased ours in Feb. 02. I was hoping to see some early "03's", when i saw a similarly equipped model to mine. The base price for the same 2wd is about a grand higher, before options. I've sold Chevy's in the past can't remember too many times when GM jacked the price on existing production. Made me glad I hadn't waited.

I just bought mine yesterday, so I have recently gone through some serious investigation and negotiation on this truck.

I found two "Standard Vehicle Price" (Base sticker price). One was $30,465 and the other was $31,215. These are both for a 2002 Avalanche 1500 2WD. Option prices are identical and no "standard" features are different. It does appear that Chevy changed prices some time in the model year.

I bought a Victory Red Z66 with 6-way leather, Convenience Package, and roof rack. Sticker was $34,283 but dealer added 20" chrome wheels to make the price $39,278

After having them put the original 17" back on (I think they look great) and add some tubular step bars, the selling price was low $29's. I took the 60 month 0% as being too good to pass up.

This truck is great. I actually regretted not having to go to work today because I didn't get to drive it.

Ya GM did have about 3 price markups throughout the 2002 model line up. I think the last was around March, and another in late 2001. Therefore, even though the rebates got better the base price also increased so the deals today are close to the same as those at the beginning of the year.

I got mine just about 2weeks ago. I had to wait since I was trading in and would take to big of a loss at the beginning of the year.

The dealers are probably a little more motivated so it shouldnt be much of a problem getting the AV for invoice now plus the rebates.

I wish I could have gotten mine earlier but I am happy I finally have an AV. No complains here plus mine has a born on date of 6/02 so hopefully all the little bugs have been worked out even though only a small percentage seems to have problems.

Enjoy your AV, my wife and I have certainly enjoyed ours.

I bought a pewter 2002 Z71 with heated leather and convenience package (sticker price $36,900) for $32,000 without the rebate. ?I bought it via the internet, and it was the most pleasant car-buying experience of my life.

My only complaint is that I wanted a red one, but my wife wanted pewter, so now I'm really enjoying my pewter AV.

By the way, my base sticker price was $33, 245.

i got lucky but..... i have the same truck you are looking for only in red and with out sunroof.... i got headed seats the works... leather. it's a top of the line av... sticker was 40-42

i walked out the door at 28,800 with tax and all.

make sure you look around first... cause i almost got a blue one for 35,500! i saved well more then enough to pay for a cool paint job.
just keep your eye out for that one time deal... that chevy makes a mistake on. ;)

Are you sure about those prices Bigred? It doesn't make sense. That's a huge gap between sticker and what you paid, and that sticker is way overpriced.

My Z-71 with power buckets & the $1100 sunroof/homelink  stickered at like $37,500. Heated leather seats were only a $700 upgrade, and Onstar would have been like +350. So since you were -sunroof yours should have stickered right around were mine was ???

I got mine in 8/01, but I don't think they could have changed the prices that much.

After GM discount I was around $31,500 total.

I have to agree with zimmmy red z-71 (july 01) stickered at 38 and change loaded, heated leather, sunroof, roof rack, running boards, onstar, homelink the only optio it didn't have was a engine block heater (but this isn't Alaska) can't believethe sticker jumped to the range Big Red is quoting...must be a California thing ;)

I just got my new 2002 last Saturday. It's a Z-71 with nothing real fancy and the sticker was $35K. The dealer knocked off $3500 plus I got 0% financing for 60 months from GMAC.

bought mine two weeks ago completely loaded w/out block heater; sticker @ $38,900. The dealer invoice was at $34,700 and thats what i paid w/ the zero percent. also gave me a good deal on trade

you brought up the mistake chevy made.

it was priced wrong... but it was in a good way. i kept finding out that things like tinted windows were in the price but not on the truck... things like that... and when they sold the truck.. ops they sold it as a unloaded z-71
but then again... the silver av siting next to it was also priced the same.... i do live in city know for money... and not know for avalanches. i'm still trying to find out how my dad knocked the price all the way down to 28.... but he only tells me certain things... that or he bought the truck for a higher price and made me only pay 28? all i know is that i am very lucky.

Big Red there are no 2002 Z71's that have stickers of 40k or more ? ?a z71 fully loaded with EVERYTHING including a sunroof, the highest sticker would have been 39,566.00 if it was built in after april 2002 ? a northface just hits 40K ?so ?your facts about your sticker price have to be wrong. ? ?and unless your state has 2% sales tax I cant see you getting a z71 for that price out the door. ?A friend of mine is sitting next to me that works for GM ( im showing him the site) and he is even saying that is most likely impossible.

I bought my truck August 3rd. My truck had a sticker of 39,166 I paid 33,500 for it without the 2500 rebate because I financed it at 0%. Then came the modding the paint and the wheels and the tax.
