Privacy Glass (or Lack There Of...)

GUEST
I am about to be the proud owner of a Z71 and had a question. The AV that I am buying (used) does not have the privacy glass in the 2nd set of doors. I noticed on this site's FAQ that this did occur on a limited number of early production units.
My question is: Has anyone tried to get GM to swap out the non-privacy glass with privacy glass under the original mfg's warranty since it is stated as standard equipment? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. ???

Thanks,
Burt

My guess is you'll have trouble with this, especially since you are not the original owner. I can see them claiming it is a manufacturing substitution or parts availability problem, and not a defect in materials or workmanship.

Now, if the rear glass had the broken frame, or the side glass had real warranty issues, you might have some luck trying to get the darker glass in the deal, but I wouldn't count on it.

Of course, there's really no harm in asking, is there? However, my guess is that this isn't the situation where you start yelling and screaming and threatening legal action.

Just my opinion...

blbright,

This probably isn't much help, but since my Av came with the 3 rear windows deep-tinted, I don't have the problem. 3 Suggestions come to mind:

1) A reliable glass/body shop (that you trust) could do the swapout for you....

2) If you're $$$down, try a Mylar tint kit and DIY - it should make an interesting and easy-to-do mod.

3) Try clicking on one of our sponsor's sites at the top of the page. Get a quote and decide which way is the best for you.

Congrats on your new vehicle - enjoy it!

I think if you have "problems" with the windows and have a good relationship with the dealer, they would have to replace them under warranty. >:D

other option is get them tinted by a good reputable shop. should run you about $60 for both windows. Make sure they use quality tint.

I agree with this...get them tinted if they won't replace them. Find a shop that uses LLumar Film. It has a lifetime warranty. Also, get them to tint them to 25%. If you can, get the front done, too. In this state you can only go 35% on the front (legally) but it looks good with the back. Shouldn't cost over $100 to get all 5 windows tinted.

I'd push heavily on the dealer to get them to do the swap, or pay a tint shop to do them. Then I would fork up the extra $ and get the front ones to match. I love having the privacy of limo tint. >:D

It is not a warranty issue, if the vehicle came without the deep tint (like mine) the window had a credit (about $150) for not having the tint. I can't believe that you will talk your dealer into replacing the door glass. Check the rear window frame for splitting, if it is split (like mine was) you should get the window replaced for free, and the dealer should be able to give you tinted in stead of the no tint (or light tint). I prefer the no tint rear window, the drivers side auto diming mirror works well. With the tinted rear the center mirror gets less light, and then the drivers side doesn't dim as much as it should.

At the dealership where I work, people order their trucks missing some standard equipment on purpose-maybe they didn't need carpet (called a carpet delete group), or privacy glass would impair visibility-like a construction worker who already has to look through a cab protector behind the window. Whatever reason the dealership made to order the vehicle that way, they won't replace the windows, but they might pay to have them tinted for you. Tinting can run anywhere between $100-250, depending on the shop doing the work. Tinted windows do still count as privacy glass as an add when you trade in the vehicle (or maybe you won't), so that's a bonus!

If your original invoice states it is supposed to come with privacy glass than I would push to make sure it did. For me, it would be the same as buying a Z71 that is supposed to come with 17s (written on the invoice) and you see some stock rubber and 16s on it.

Either they put it back the way it was supposed to be or cut me a deal on the price to compensate me.

I have to agree with half-breed. My AV also did not have the rear side windows tinted and I was given a $150 credit on my window sticker (the used AV you're looking at was probably the same).

I took it to a shop and had them limo-tinted... they are now much darker than the factory tint and it only cost about $70.

Plus, I like it because it gives me the option of using other speciality tints and/or special colors in the future should I want to change the look.

Folks,

Thanks for all the info. I have the invoice and there is no indication that a $150 credit was ever applied to the price. In speaking with the previous owner, he had no idea that the AV even came with privacy glass until I pointed it out to him.

Anyway, I may pursue it with my local dealership or I may just get them tinted...that way if I change my mind about the degree of tinting I have an option.

Have a great week.....

Best Regards,
Burt
