I am in considering lifting my truck and have an opportunity to get a killer deal on a ProComp lift. I was going to shell out the cash on an RCD lift until I had this opportunity come up, soooo........

I wanted to know from those of you who have installed a ProComp lift, what your feedback is on this lift?
Have you had any problems???
Has anyone compared this lift to other brands (rancho, RCD)? What makes it better or worse?

Any feedback that is out there is appreciated.

What do you consider a "killer deal?"

Getting a great deal on a suspension lift that may (or may not) be inferior still only gets you that lift kit.

When I buy critical components like suspension lifts I find out which one is best and then shop for the best deal on it. That's what I'd recommend to you.

So, what's a "killer deal?"

Dan, Thanks for watching out for me.....I understand the concept of getting a not so good lift kit, hence my inquiry. I have done lots of research on lift kits, just not the ProComp kit.

In my opinion, the best kits are (in order); RCD, Rancho, & FabTech. FYI - FabTech being #3, I would not even consider putting their lift on my truck, I think their kits are a POS.

Which one in your opinion is "the best"?

The "killer deal" is getting everything, including tires at cost and installed for free.

#1 is RCD

Nothing else matters. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. (It's based on lots of research, magazine reading, owner reviews and talking to shops).

Oh, please explain your "killer deal." My deal wasn't killer but it was quite good:

Approx. prices based on memory:
RCD 6" suspension lift $1450
Installation under $500
Tires (BFG All Terrain TA KOs - 315s) $200 each
Wheels (Eagles) $100 each
Above includes mounting and balancing tires.

ok, I have to weigh in here and say that this fits squarely within my definition of "Killer Deal"

As for the topic, I think xrover has one, also got a "killer deal" [per the above example] as I recall . . . . .

So did you decide to keep the AV afterall? Anyway, I am pretty sure Xrover has the very first ever ProComp lifted AV and I am sure he could tell you lots about it. He is in SoCal and Cindy can probably get you in contact with him.

AvKing,

I have decided to hold on to the Av as I have not received but one phone call on it. I thought it was priced rather well at $27,000, but maybe not.

Sorry you did not get what you wanted, but it will good to still have you around.

Are you considering the Dinkey or Pismo meets?

Just don't ask Xrover what he paid. Ahh hell, I'll blow it for him so he can't gloat over us.

Xrover got his lift, wheels and tires for free  BTW his rig looks real nice.

I have the Rancho lift on mine and I am quite happy with it. I also got a real good deal as I only paid

$4800 for lift, wheels, tires, exhaust, Chrome Step Bars, and painted cladding >:D

AVKING,

I am not planning on making those cruises as of yet...river season has me taking the boat out almost every weekend. I may hit one more cruise this summer. Does anyone want to go to Arizona for some boating??????

I guess there are not too many takers on the ProComp lift.....

I would be up for a boat trip to Arizona. How hot is it where you go? To hot for camping probably? I could make it a business trip and go to the office in Scottsdale after. Do you do midweek or just weekend? Maybe we could get Ken and Cindy + Brian and Barb interested.

I am surprised I missed this one..

I do have the 6" Pro Comp lift with the MX6 shocks. The Pro Comp kit when first introduced (Mine) had minor control arm bracket angle issues. They were not perfectly angled for the AV. (1500 4x4) They did correct this and did update my truck. The Pro Comp kit keeps the same drop angle of the front axles as stock. This is very important. I have not had any problems with alignment or broken components. It is a solid well designed kit. I do take my truck off road and when doing so I do push the truck to it's limits.

The MX6 shocks are awesome.

I think all the current popular kits will give a good ride. I feel my ride is as comfortable as stock.

The main thing to look for when getting a suspension kit is the quality of the kit for the particular vehicle. Each builder does it differently and the time they spend doing R&D is extremely important.

Eventhough the AV shares many suspension similarities to the Suburban and Tahoe, They are not exactly the same in regards to bracketry angles. Some companies I am sure have taken the Suburban or Tahoe kits and made minor adjustments so they will fit the AV. These kits end up with stressed components and end up cracking or breaking.

I can only speak for what I know to be fact. I do know that the Pro Comp kit. when originally installed on my AV as a prototype was an existing kit from either the Suburban or Tahoe. I don't know for sure. After the kit was installed and the minor differences between vehicles were noticed, the Owner of Pro Comp (a personal friend) told R&D to redesign the components that were not fitting perfectly on the AV. The new components were then installed on my truck.

Call up the manufacturers of the various kits and ask them how there kits were specifically designed for the AV.

As for the killer deal,

Us Guinea Pigs got them ;D

Seriously though.. You might have to settle for a great price for the kit with install from one retailer and get the tires and wheels from another.

Decide which kit you want first. Then shop around for the best price for that kit....

XRover,

Thanks for your feedback, it is appreciated. I think you are one of a handful of people who have the ProComp kit.
I would like to know if you are happy with the kit overall or are there any things that you would do differently now? Looking back, do you wish you went with a different kit? What do you like and dislike about? How does it compare, in your opinion, to the other kits that are out there?

Thanks

Hey Lightning,

I really love the kit..

I know it is late notice but I am actually going to the Pro Comp Factory tomorrow morning (Fri. 5/30/03.) The factory is in Chula Vista.. Right around the corner from you.

I will be there at 8:15 a.m. They are replacing my prototype MX6 shocks with production ones. If you want some good info on the kit and maybe even a special deal you might want to meet me there.

the address is:
2360 Boswell rd.
Chula Vista, Ca 91914

My cell number if you can make it is 310 930-1600

I have no regrets about having the kit. Any questions I have had have alway's been answered just by calling them.

I don't really know how it compares to the other kits because I have not driven other AV's with other kits. I have heard from people here that some of the Fabtech kits have had stress cracks or failures. I did look at one Rancho kit that had extremely angled front axles which would just cause prematue wear.

After I drop my truck off, I am going to Coronado to finish a job then I will pick up the AV in the afternoon.

It would be cool if you could make it.

Lenny

Lenny,

It will be pretty tough to make it down, but I will try to give you a call in the morning. If you have a chance and get this message in time, call me on my cell at 619-246-1897

Thanks,

Ari

We actually talked on the phone but different schedules wouldn't allow it. Anyway, Got new shocks and am testing out new rear control arm drop brackets.

Ari,

Did you ever get your kit? Just to ad more to the mix. The New Trailmaster has a great kit.( I know many eyes are rolling now)I have installed everything, RCD , Fabtech, ProComp and the Trailmaster kit is just as good. All the kits are alike in many ways. I would see which I could get the best deal on. Anyway just my 2 cents.

Matt,

I have not gotten a kit yet. I appreciate your feedback on the Trailmaster, I will definately take a look at it. I have not been a big fan of theirs in the past, but I should look at them also.

Just so you know, I found out a few things about these so called, Rancho, fabtech, RDC blah blah kits... They are the same, just different welding points, as for 5 inch vrs a true 6 inch lifts did anyone notice the spacer included with the kits that give you a true 6 inch lift? All you have to do to the rancho to get 6+ inches is add a spacer to it and crank the nose up. I was hooked on a RDC lift till I got 6 lift kits side by side. I ended up buying a 9 inch lift kit after looking for about 5 hours. I'll be runnin 315/35/16s with it.

BIGRED,

Thanks for your feedback on the lifts. I have to disagree with you about them all being the same though. They all differ somewhat, whether its a two piece cross member or a one piece. Some kits have the torsion bars reinforced, some don't. Some provide more lift without cranking the torsion bars. As far as a 9" kit, these are not going to look similar to the 6" kits because once you go to that much of a lift, you have to be more creative with you engineering.

I saw your post on your lift, I can't wait to see the photos. What shop is installing the kit?

It's a shop called up and down, They do a great job on the trucks I see locally. And yes you have a point on the cross members... I was going more for just about every other part but that one. ;) I get her back tomorrow night!

Not trying to bash any product line, but Pro Comp still has an R&D issue in regards to the rear portion of their lift kit. 4WheelParts in Dallas put their kit on 13 WBH Av's recently for a local conversion company that were returned as unsafe to drive. I'm sure Pro Comp will have the issue fixed immediately being they aren't a company that would leave something like that. Just wanted to fill ya' in on that. Yell at me if you'd like more details and I'll hook you up with the service manager's number....They may have had older kits too prior to the fixes that XRover mentioned.

Good luck with the decision....It's a tough one, but you'll more than likely be happy with any of the lifts. Just hope you're ready to void that suspension warranty!
