I haven't seen this discussed here, but if it has been I apologize.

Second, most folks don't care, cause they rip it out and install a UPD, Volant, etc. in anyway.

But until I do that, what the heck is the silly extension on the intake pipe to the right of the throttle body? If you follow the pipe from the air filter to the throttle body, that would be one thing, but the silly thing keeps goin' haflway to the fuse box! Did GM get an extra deal on plastic? Was the guy making the mold drunk?

My dad first pointed this out 'cause his '01 Silverado with the 5.3 doesn't have this "silly gizmo". His guess was that it was for resonance (to quiet the air down), but wouldn't this extra "dead-end" cause a shockwave back the other direction "confusing" the air and have the effect of a non-free-flow airstream?

Thanks. I don't post here much, but I really like this forum.

Not only does it shoot across to the fuse box but after the filter it has a section that goes straight down. I think that it is for the noise and to kill beautiful HP

That is a dead air space that gets rid of some sound. All 1993-1997 Camaro's and Firebirds with the LT1 have them. On the F-body it points strait down and is round. On the Fbody user groups they called it a donkey di_k. It just makes your vehicle quieter.

Mjmenke is correct. It quiets the intake. Airaid claims that it does not affect intake performance hence their 5.3l intake kit utilizes it.

The "growth" on the stock air tube is a helmholtz resonator. It is there to help deaden noise from the intake.
