Question for Muffman;
I intend to go with your recomended Flowmaster system in the near future, and I know that you don't recomend tail pipes out the back. I realize that you are concerned for peoples safety pertaining to c.m. poisoning and this is also a concern of mine in regards to my family and to the next owners when I trade in my Av. My son has just bought an 04 GMC Envoy XUV that has a tailgate and a midgate with power window (come on chevy) and it seems very much alike to the Av. setup. My question is why would GM have the tail pipe coming out the back on this vehicle, if their is a concern for c.m. leakage. I guess i'm from the old school of hot-rodding and dual exhaust and I just like the complete look of the pipes out back. I really only want to do the right thing, and if out the side is it then that is what I will do.

One last question, is there any difference in sound running 3" tips out the back or out each side. Thanks Jim

That tailpipe, like the Trailblazer, exits out the back and turns toward the ground, it does not exit "straight" out. If you were to turn your pipes down toward the ground on the AV, I would see no problem with that either.

However, that doesn't seem to be what most want to do. They want to run them straight out the back, not aiming toward the pavement.

The worst that GM's design in this case could do is whats called "blowback". Noise, predominantly high frequency, that is reflected back to the vehicle from the pavement.

Most vehicles that have rear openings have a warning against driving with the rear open, regardless of where the exhaust exits.

There is a vacuum space behind any moving vehicle (think about NASCAR drafting). If you stick your tailpipe directly into this space you'll have a solid cloud of exhaust stuck to the back of your truck. Blocky vehicles are the worst. A window doesn't have to be open for a little outside air to get drawn in.

Carbon monoxide PERMANENTLY occupies the oxygen carrying places on your blood cells until the blood cell gets replaced by a new one. The blood cells are still alive but they can never carry oxygen again.

You may be getting a little CO everyday on your 1 hour commute, just enough to get a headache. You'd never know the problem was your tailpipes.

Drive all day on the family vacation. Everybody is snapping at each other by the end of the day. Who'd think it was the tailpipes?
