Question? What unit is right behind the Grill?

Thanks!

I was tightening up my billet grill. a Cab pulled up behind me aAnd honked his horn scared the poop out of me the next thing I see is that the screw driver has impailed that unit and it was hissing at me. F*CK :E: :E: :E: :8: :8: :8: :8: :8: :8:

Can I run the Truck with it like that until the spring?

Do you know how much they cost?

can it be repaired?

I wouldn't wait; If you replace it in time, you can pump down the system after you seal it (or bypass it) and save your receiver-dryer. Then recharge it later. Don't leave your A/C system open!!!
I hadn't looked at the Av's compressor, but other's compressor's (clutch) disconnect right behind their clutch - remove that connection to avoid any activation meanwhile.

I feel your pain.... :8:

If you pump & recharge yourself, remember the PAG oil!! (I guess we're using R-134) :D:
I hope you didn't breathe it! It caused testicular cancer in lab rats!!

Since it was hissing, :C: it would be you lost your R134a freon.... You have now added about 2 lbs to the atmosphere for green house gases! But your not really harming the ozone!
You should get it fixed, because your A/C system is used during the winter, every time you call for front windshield defrost, unless you pull the fuse for the A/C pump. But you should also keep in mind that you now have the atmosphere exposed to the inner system, and with winter and salt coming, your going to contaminate the inner piping, possible pump with excess moisture and salt. Definitely not good for long term reliability of your A/C system if you do wait until the spring to have it fixed. So if you want to wait, you will pay for it later, and thats in continuous problems down the road!
My last truck lost the freon when the stone went through it, it was claimed through insurance, and if I remember correctly it was about $850.00 for the repair.. New condenser, freon and labour.
Just call it a Christmas gift for your mechanic. You've drummed up some more business for him! >:D

All in all, its still a bummer! :6:

Take care

Chris

Well I can't do antything with it till Monday at the very earliest .

Can I use it until then?

Maybe i'll just get the condenser replaced but want get it pumped until spring or should i just bite the big one and get it fixed?

I sware If I find that Cab Driver I'm going to make him replace the unit with his teeth!

Do you have the automatic temp control or the manual heater controls? If its automatic better turn it off ASAP because it automatically uses the A/C.

Of course most A/C systems have a pressure sensor that will disable it if the pressure gets too low, so it probably doesn't matter.

Now that its open they'll have to replace the dryer and flush the system. The longer you leave it open the more contaminated it will become.

Too bad, its going to be an expensive repair unless you can get a replacement at the junk yard.

If you have to wait until Monday, at all costs, disable the HVAC operation! At least the A/C clutch.(It shouldn't operate anyway.) Plug the hole (whatever you use, don't let part of it inside the system, even a fragment!) If you pump it down with the hole (duh) you'll let the outside contaminants in. Get some R-134a hoses/guage and a can of R-134 at a Pep-Boys or equiv. and temporary "pressurize" the system enough to push out any air that migrated into it. (engine off/ A/C off in this case) Can rt side up & slow in this case, until after the hiss for a short while, then plug it if you can. DON'T BREATHE IT!! Otherwise, prepare for a receiver/dryer as well as your condenser, at least. Simplly put the Rec/dr. sucks moisture. You'll have to have a good vac on it for a while to boil any out.
Any other takes on this?

well, it happened a few hours ago so i'm sure it's completely drained. I can get away without driving it. So i'll just let it sit since there is nothing else I can do.

Man, what a bummer. What did that #%@ cab do, come right up behind you ??? :E:

I've had a stone through a compressor years ago, and they are not cheap to repair/replace. :6: Good luck. Sure hope you sell those tires real soon to ease some of the cost.

I wonder if they can solder it up like they do radiators. Either way you're going to have to get the A/C service done. Driers don't generally cost much. Of course you never know with the Avalanche. The condenser will probably run as much as a radiator, $200.

I quoted the Rad a few months ago just out of curiosity and it was $700 for the 2500 just if you wanted to know I spoke to my Mechanic and he said the condenser wopuld probably be about half that price and the dryer is about $100.

He said I could drive the truck until I get it because ther was nothing that could be done. I'll probably have the proble4m addressed on Monday.

Yes, Fred I would agree selling those tires would be helpfull now!

It just pissed me off because It was something I noticed and thought I should take care of that pulled out the first scre driver I saw which was a little too long and then HONK!!!

Oh Well note much i can do I guess these things happen.

Too bad the screwdriver didn't fly the other way and into his rad/condenser!

You can pull the connector off the A/C clutch or you can pull the fuse..or relay...

I'd give you the description of the fuse, relay locations but my book is for the 03...

Fuse # 47 or A/C COMP is about 10amps, you could just pull it out for now..

Good luck with the costs...
If you have to get the condenser core from the GM dealer and you can't get a good cost on it, let me know, and we'll get for employee cost then..
