I did a search and couldn't find any info, I hope this is the right place to post this.

I was wondering if anyone has modified their AV with rack and pinion steering. If you have any info would be great.

TIA,

Mike

The Av HAS R/P steering. (At least the 2wd 1500 does.)

I'm not sure on the two wheel drives, but I know the 4x4 does not, and thats what I would like to mod.

we have recirculating ball I thought (although I really don't know the difference...something else to go learn about :0:)

I have an '02 2WD. I'm not a steering expert, but last time I was under there, it didn't look like rack and pinion to me. Did they start offering this later on the 2WDs?

I know 2002 have power assisted recirculating ball steering....and I bet the other years do as well...

How would you mod a rack & pinion steering anyways?

Maybe it was my Sierra that had the R/P Steering.??
:cautious:

Ok, since nobody asked so I will. I am new at this anyway :2:

What is the difference between rack and pinion and recirculating ball?
And what does one have that the other doesn't? road feel? My av actually has really nice steering I thought. Obviously it can be better? ???

How Car Steering Works

I had to go look this up and learn myself :)

Cool info. I have another question, which the How Stuff Works site didn't address. Is one form of steering better than the other? Why would one want to change av's steering to rack and pinion (assuming that it is better)?

In a recirculating ball type steering, road feel is isolated by multiple joints (more comfortable steering and less feel). Recirculating ball also has more weight and not as much response as rack & pinion! A rack system is more responsive and compact but transfers much more road feel to the steering wheel. A rack system basically has three joints, two tie rods and the connection to the column. A rack system would be a difficult mod. The Furd >:D Expedition has a rack, try to look at one of those.
