Down here in fla 95 degree days are normal, mv av temp gauge is always about 1 notch back from 210 and as i roll off a light the fan noise is louder than the kn fipk it also seems to be on when im in tow haul more of the time. that fan is loud and i feel a power robber.... whats the word on how long and often the fan is needed

My neighbour has a 2500 HD Silverado running a 6L, 4.10

This evening he asked me if I notice a lot of fan noise. He hears this a lot when he is hauling his 5th wheel trailer.

According to him, it is the clutch fan doing its thing. This seems to be a normal thing according to my neighbour.

got_change,

I know what you're talking about. We have that same noise on ours too. It seems to do that when it's real hot outside (90 degrees and up) or when revving it up shortly after a cold start. I really don't think it's a problem necessarily because I hear that on a lot of GM trucks on a hot day as well. And no, the engine temp. is never hot on our truck when it makes that roaring noise. After 5-10 seconds after rolling off from a light it goes away. Does this sound like what happens with you? As far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

This is the way a fan clutch works. When the engine is cold, the lubrication in the clutch is still thick which will cause the fan to engage until the engine warms up a little. During driving and towing. The fan clutch is designed to engage the fan more and more as the temperature heats up.

The more the fan clutch engages the fan, the more the fan turns which of course makes a little more noise. Sounds like a roaring noise, but is completely normal and cools a lot better than typical electric fans. :B: :0:

shafman ! i know you are right on how the viscous fan works it just seems over active.ive never seen 210 deg even if i let it idle for 1/2 hour and sometimes the fan will be on when driving for 10 minutes. I guess the tow/ haul thing with the fan is 100% my imagination.

It is possible to have a bad fan clutch if you really find it running overtime. I'm not so sure I see 210 degrees either. The thermostat should open at that temperature, but the fan may kick in quicker.
