Ram Air Hoods... For Av.

WVbubba, where did the air scoop reside, I know that it attaches to the bottom of the box, but I want to know if it had easy access to incoming air. The only problem that I can forsee is that it may suck up water or mud or snow, and cause the engine to suffocate, which would inturn kill it. It could get damaged during ofroad.

If you have any picks of location that would be great.

Thanks, James R.

Yes the scoop goes straight down from the bottom hole and the scoop is kind of aimed behind the tow hook opening, it is made of the same kind of plastic as the upper tube to the throttle body.....it has to opening one staight forward and the other pointing towards the ground (drainage???) as for sucking up water and suffocating the engine, you forget that the airbox also has the fender openings as well so even if tube is fully block air has an alternate route (path of least resistance) damage off roading purhaps but not any lower than the skid plate over the transfer case

i just wanted to bring this back to the top. I was wondering if you got this installed yet?

If you look at that scoop it looks like it mounts down and faces the front of the vehicle. Consider that the coolest (most dense) air is going to be heavy and low, this scoop should pick it up.

Has anyone installed one yet?

Yup. WVBubba put one on. His remarks are in two different posts earlier on this very page.

:cautious:Maybe I'm being silly, but instead of going down all the way to the snatch hook, can't we just go out through the fender well and get a good straight shot. Hey, I know 'wheel turbulance, and 'denser air toward the ground' but we ain't shavin' thousanths of a second to win the NHRA.... I haven't looked to see what's in the way, but is it a straight shot [3inches?] to cool air? It's not gonna make a lick of difference to me most months of the year, and I'm not sure it'll make a measurable difference anyway except on a dyno, but it'll be a cool almost free mod.

Not thinking of racing machines, but trying to figure out their motivation (sorry, I'm an engineer ... read: nerd).

Either they have chosen the easiest, most flexible way out of the engine compartment and/or are seeking cooler air. There have been many comments about why the Av's stock air system pulls air from the fender --> because it's cooler air. There have even been posts where people have even chimed in about the advantages.

Another thought as to the "downward" direction could be ensuring that water is fully drained out of the airway.

Since I do not know many details about ram air hoods apart from very basic information, does anyone know if a ram air hood would pose a problem in the winter with the snow? Obviously, I would brush off as much as I can, but what if snow gets inside? I imagine once it melts, it would just drip down into the FIPK box, which might not cause problems on its own, but is there anything else that might pose a risk?

it would be pretty hard for it to drop on the FIPK box but if you wanted to stop that you could drill holes in the back to have the water drip down. I know I want one of these I just would like to get the contact info so I can buy one.

I love these and am very interested in getting one. However, if these are functional I have two concerns:

1. What is the chance of getting dirt/debris/water, etc. into the engine compartment when off-roading?

2. Do these cause any noticeable drop in mpg due to increased resistence?

Wow, I like it. it would look sweet in black

>:D
Yup, Yup, Yup. It is going to be too cool. I might even have to delay some items to move this puppy to the top of the line. 'cuse me, comin through, make a hole, cuse me' (y)

Paint one pewter and have it in south Dakota , late july ;) ;) ;)

One question though, If the ram air dumps down in to the air box, won't that have to be reworked. The snorkel comes off the top side the box. Old air way is up from the bottom  Sucking unfiltered air, well, sucks :cautious:

I like the way this looks. I already have my old hood sold, so bring it on.

That does look good. Wonder how well it would work with the K&N FIPK. Now its time to start saving my pennies.................

aww man i so did not need to see this..... I MUST HAVE ONE ;D finaly there is a good looking functional hood.... i cant wait!

Why is it that every time I read about one of these mods my wallet gets lighter? ;D

I may have missed it, but is there a price listed yet?

While You Are Distracted Reading About These Mods I Take You Wallet And Take Out All The Money Out Of There And Add It To My Mod Budget >:D

Would a bug deflector interfere with the function of this hood?

A bug deflector would probably look stupid on this hood, so maybe it doesn't matter.
