Rear Door Speaker Upgrade Question...

I searched for this topic but I could not find any threads containing my question; So here goes...

I have the premium delco cd/radio in my 02 and I really like the sound. I realize that there are may better systems out there , but I am content with stock item.
I just wish the rear door speakers had more bass/ depth to the sound they reproduce.

What recommendations would anyone like to offer in regards to replacing the current rear door speakers with better ones, without using amps or other periphirals.

Any assistance will greatly be appreciated.

Thank you, Phil

The rear spkrs can easily be upgraded with 6.5's only
BUT
The factory amp reduces the output to the rear to inhance front fill
So unless you are going to do the amp bypass or replace the HU+BP
a top quality speaker will still not have a great improvement

Hi, I'm a bit of a :2: in this area, but I'll tell you what I was told this weekend. The advice given me by a shop who upgraded my factory unit was:
a) but in an amp. Nothing too serious
b) upgrade the front speakers using the single round units, not the two piece combs or the oval shape as the round gives a better quality sound
c) don't bother with the rear speakers, or do them last as the front speakers are setup/designed to be the main sound source. He suggested just leaving the stocks in place

I must agree with the "nothing too extreme" philosophy. There are a lot of threads here that get into some extreme upgrades to the stock audio systems. I think they're great...but just not for my taste and my budget.

The list of my updates:

I've upgraded my front speakers and found that to be a significant improvement. Better sound quality. I did go with seperate components as with originals, but i think a coaxial design would work well. I just like having the tweeter higher in the truck.

Second was the replacement of the factory stereo. I did it for the features, not so much for the sound quality. I wanted a CD player with MP3 capabilties and also an "AUX" input that wouldn't cost me additional dollars for adaptors (standard RCA was all I wanted).
I found this to be a slight improvement on sound quality, but once motor and road noise are introduced, it's difficult to differentiate between old and new. I love having MP3 compatability. A lot less CD's in the truck.

Next was the AMP Bypass as detailed in this section. That was easy and made a substantial improvement to the overall volume.

The last update was a Bazooka self-powered sub-woofer tube. An 8" 100 Watt tube does everything I need it to do and them some. It's easy, sounds great, and is completely non disruptive to the interior of the truck. If it's in the way when folding down the mid-gate, it unplugs and unstraps temporarily.

The most important thing to me is that, besides the head unit, the other changes are invisible. And the head unit upgrade can be easily revered as well.

Great subject to discuss....many possibilities....I've gained valuable knowledge from this forum.

Oh....and I forgot an important detail regarding my list of upgrades. Everthing combined was just over $500.00. Of course, the Bazooka was purchased off of E-BAY

I recently placed and Sirius FM Mod unit on my Factory HU- Stack system in the 2002 AV.
I hated the cheap rear speakers,
Replaced tham (took off door panels), bought a 2.00 adapter for 2 whosi whats its toplug NEW speakers and CHEVY wire harness into one another-
15 minuts to do both side-
100% improvement.
NOW it aitn a high end super stero systerm, it is CLEANER, a little LOUDER and over all woth the 75 buck for 2 new speakers.
DO IT.
I am going to do the fronts soon as well-
actually I was worried about the factory amp thingy- but it did not affect anything-

SOUNDS 100% better.
Later,

I am new here I wanted to upgrade my speakers because they were always distorted I read for days at all the posting and got infinity's.Put 605cs component speakers in the front and 652I 2-ways in the rear doors oh my god what a great sound it has now!!! I kept the OEM head unit bought speaker adapters to plug into the harness. I can her things in songs i didnt know were there they are super clear. The only thing I want to do is add a infinity Basslink for a little more bass.I am so happy with infinitys. :B:

Hey BIGDOG,

I am probably gonna do the same thing with the same speakers as you this week ( and an AMP as well). Wherevdid you get the brackets to fit the component speakers and the wiring harness adapters from? Do you have an amp?

Hey BigDog.....Keep us posted regarding the "Base-Link". I've been curiour about those too.

For Snake-Eater....I have a similar setup with regards to the components in the front. I avtually used Kickers. They sound great. As far as adapters and such, Crutchfield gives you everything you need to retro-fit without hacking. Always a nice fit.

Sorry i didnt get back to you sooner the back doors screw into the same holes very easy to replace the front set get a little tougher but not bad the 6.5 speaker in the front door needs holes drilled in the inner door very easy 1/8" drill bit i just held the speaker in the door marked it with a scriber and drill it.The tweeter was the most difficult Infinitys come with 2 style mounting brackets i used the straight mount i scraped my old tweeter and drilled out a hole to fit new bracket in it was really easy.I bought all my adaptors at circuit city it was $21.00 for 6 of them.I dont have a amp I didnt use infinitys crossover I tried just pluging the speakers in to see how they sounded they sound good a sub will help.

oh ya sorry make sure you tape the lose wires to the harness very good the first time i rolled down my window it unpluged my speaker. good thing i was testing it before i put it all back together. :)

Has anyone found a mounting location in their AV for an Infinity Basslink?? I have the Bose system and am much happier with it after I cranked up the bass almost all the way to the right and lowered the treble a few notches left of center. I would really like to add a Basslink or other powered subwoofer.

Will it mount under the rear passenger seat - behind the rear seats?

Any other powered solution input would be appreciated - Bazzoka - Kenwood

Strealthbox is not really an option as the rear Audio controls and vents must be maintained (as well as the central storage)

quick question, I see that you have an 8" bazooka tube in your av. Where did you put it, did you have to cut anything?? My rear seats won't latch. Where did you tie into the existing factory speaker wires at and what colors are which??? Thank you Jason

I upgraded my factory speakers to Kicker 6.5.2 components in front and 6.5 2-ways in the rear doors. JL Audio 300/2 bridged running all four from an Alpine CD7998 head unit. Also have a JL 10W6 sub running on a JL 500/1 amp but sounds like you're more concerned with the door speakers. The only complaint I had with this setup was too much high end response and the "staging" was off (high's are directional and having them come from the front and rear in equal, or near equal, proportions actually makes the sound less clear and sound distorted). My local stereo shop recommended the same thing mentioned earlier in this thread: either go with 6.5 only in the rear (no tweeter) or drop them altogether but I ignored that advice. As a compromise, I decided to keep the 6.5 2-way in the rear door, but put Stinger coils on them to cut out the high-end response; the result is great. High's are still LOUD but much more clear because the staging on guitar/cymbals now comes from the front as it should, but have fair mid-bass in the rear doors as a little bonus. But if I had it to do over again I would go with the best components I could afford up front and either put 6.5 with no tweeter, or eliminate the rear door speakers altogether and put the money into a small sub back there. Not sure if others have experienced this but it's my $.02 for what it's worth. Good luck.
