Rear view mirror fell off and to a "chunk" out of my windshield

I have a 2004 Avalanche Z66 with 287000 plus miles. I have always had problems with the rear view mirror falling off. I have had professionals as well as myself glue the mirror back in place. The last time the mirror fell off, it took a piece of glass the size of the mount from the windshield. I used an epoxy to try and glue the mount back on but that only lasted about 2 weeks. Are there any suggestions on how to attach the mirror back in place without replacing the windshield? Is there an after market plate that can be used?

I heva never heard of the windshield failing.. if so call safelite and have them look..

OR just glue it above or below or next to the bad spot...

butI Would be afraid now your windshield is compromised since the inner glass is missing a chunk if a big rock hit the outside could cause sever issues.... and or water leaks?

Yeah.. if the glass is what failed this time and not the glue, id say it's compromised and realistically needs to be replaced. Which, im trying to decide if insurance would cover that. Im sure you could say that you hit a good pot hole and it came loose.. i mean.. they'll cover cracks for that purpose.. but this is a strange issue.

I'm not sure i'd trust a bush fix on this one unless you're using it for a ranch truck or something.No matter what you do, you'd have to fill the void before re mounting and that sounds like a mess and something I cant really recommend.

I suspect the windshield glass itself is defective and is the issue.

When I bought my 2003 Avalanche used last year, the windshield needed to be replaced.

A local glass company came to my house and replaced it for $160.

I just paid cash and did not use my insurance.

Maybe that would be a good option for you, as well.

Yeah, local, smaller glass places do a great job usually and are a fraction of safelite's cost when going out of pocket.

Our local place is called "Kiss my glass" They did a great job replacing our rear glass on the montana and doing a 1" rock chip on my avalanche.

You really should have the windshield replaced. But if you must.....

Get another metal piece to glue on and use the correct adhesive kit from the pasts store (not superglue) to glue it either above or below the original location.
