Recalls And Safety Bulletins

Looked more like owner complaints to me...example: Upset because the spare is not the same wheel diameter as the 17" option. (the tire and wheel combo of the spare is the same though)...I don't find that a safety issue, really.
Interesting reading, though. :B:

Nice link - thanks

This was my favorite - sounds like a human vertical height issue :)

NHTSA Consumer Complaints for 2002 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE
OID ID Number: 8004619
Date of Failure:: 20020201
Component:: EMERGENCY PARKING BRAKE
Summary:: THE EMERGENCY BRAKE RELEASE HANDLE IS TOO LOW TO THE POINT WHERE CONSUMER CANNOT REACH BRAKE RELEASE HANDLE, CONSUMER HAS TO RELEASE BRAKE BEFORE GETTING INTO VEHICLE, CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING. *AK *YH

I agree, looks like complaints, not neccesarily safety issues.
Plus, in the safety bulletin, all posts are doubled, so really only 30 different issues.
But, this is my favorite:

NHTSA Safety Bulletin for 2002 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE
Make: CHEVROLET TRUCK Model: AVALANCHE ?Year: 2002
Service Bulletin Number: 300701
Date of Bulletin: ?
Component: STRUCTURE:BODY ROOF
Summary: CONCERNS WITH SCRATCHES ON THE REAR WINDOW LIFT GLASS CAUSED BY THE REAR WIPER.

Darn ?:7: our AV didn't come with that cool rear wiper that the poster's did. Sure would help keep it clean, without having to crawl up onto the hard covers... :rolleyes:

Definately amusing stories though, good for a laugh, if nothing else. :D

This one interested me a bit! :eek:

Component:: BRAKES:HYDRAULIC:ANTI-SKID SYSTEM
Summary:: WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH ON WET PAVEMENT, CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND ABS FAILED TO ACTIVATE WHICH RESULTED IN VEHICLE ROLLING OVER.*AK. CONSUMER STATED AS SOON AS HE APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE WHEELS LOCKED UP AND THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE BROKE LOOSE FROM THE ROAD AND SPUN 90 DEGREES TO THE LEFT, VEHICLE SKIDDED OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THROUGH A FENCE, VEHICLE THEN ROLLED INTO A DITCH, CONSUMER ALSO ADDED THAT THE FRONT AND SIDE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY.*JB

Heck of an "owner complaint"!!

Short arms + big belly = wahhhh :cry: :cry: :cry:

Hmmm. Now I userstand why the NHTSA is requiring sensors on wheels to alert drivers when their tire pressure is low. This will be done through the addition of a new MIL on the instrument panel.

Vehicle technology has improved drastically during the past few decades, but the average driver is an idiot. I guess it's cheaper to make a more complex and expensive vehicle than to educate the driver.
Oh well. Just my 2 cents.

Ugh, you can find these on any vehicle. Some of the claims are pretty silly. Also there are a ton of duplicates. Mister Roll Over accident, who could have a legit gripe is listed three times. Mister Vibrating Steering Wheel and Mirrors is listed twice. Well OK - so now there are really 15 complaints - you get the idea...

1) Air bag didn't deploy in 15 MPH frontal collision.

Good thing it didn't - air bags don't deploy until speeds get over 20 MPH. But hey, if you want an extra $1,000 in repair bills - OK.

2) Water leak in the midgate. UGH! Let us know who this person is, we can set them straight.

3) Spare tire size doesn't match 17" wheel. Well sort of. Do the math -- a 265/75R16 is almost identical in OD to a 265/70R17. Me thinkst this person doesn't like the Firestone spare.

The worst one of all is this one 896983:

This is also the 16" spare issue (again) where a mechanic told the owner it was unsafe. WOW! :eek:

The TSB section is equally not as bad as it appears.

There are ten TSB (18% of all 60 listed) on how to install the roof rack - a non-issue now as most are coming from the factory. There are six about condensation in the fog lamps, two on the rear wiper scratching the back window (ummmm, what rear wiper?). Eight aren't TSB's at all but internal communication between GM and the dealers. Two are general communications on all GM vehicles about blisters on the dashboards and to be on the look out for a bad group that got out (never heard of one on the Av). Four are about the tailgate being hard to close.

Bottom line - both lists are kind of dirty (need to be cleaned up because they are a lot of duplicates and some "as designed" issues). The 18 consumer complaints, at least 1/2 are from people who haven't read their owners manuals or have sucky dealerships. The one with the cracked plastic, hey that's a known issue fixed almost a year ago. When you read it it's pretty clear these folks have not even talked to a dealer about it.

As a matter of fact the only one I read of the 78 combined listed issues that raised my eye brows was the roll over incident - the rest, ugh ain't no big thing...

Hey guys-

As I was looking over this list last night my wife came home and told me of an accident that one of her employee's brother had. It seems he and his Avalanche were hit head on! Now get this.....neither airbags deployed and yet he wasn't hurt! The Avalanche sustained over 18k bucks in repairs.

He considers himself lucky that he didn't get hurt other than just shook up! Hmmm, I would say he's very lucky too! I believe this took place in Bellevue, Washington! Gee, can you spell L-A-W-S-U-I-T?

I wonder if they will be doing a recall on airbags?

Again this was 3rd hand information and I don't know this person myself. If I find anymore out I'll let you know....

Still waiting for my 03 Av....

I have no complaints with the Anti-Lock brakes on my 2500. A moose ran out in front of me while I was going ~70mph. I pushed the brake pedal hard and was able to steer around the moose without letting off of the brakes . I could not believe how well the Avalanche handled and how quick it slowed down. I am sure the moose was happy also :)

My .02 cents
