Remote Trans Filter??

My AV is planned as a "keeper", meaning I plan on keeping it till the wheels fall off, then puttiing them back on again. It is an awesome truck/family hauler! :)

With this in mind, I will be disapointed if any mechinical device fails before 150K (my ole trusty Swedes lasted this long w/o any major servicing). To me, the trans seem to be a major component which usually gets neglected and thus fails (on any vehicle).

I plan to do any mod to improve reliability. I was looking thru JEGS and saw where they offer a remote trans filter about the size of a PH-1 (engine oil type). To me, this along with an additional trans cooler should eliminate trans problems since servicing the filter could now be an easy task, say every 3 - 7 K miles. Change the trans external filter every engine oil change or two. Additionally, flushing would be a snap too, just screw on an adaptor to the filter housing.

Anyone try these before or have one now?

Anyone know of a deep trans pan which is finned and has a drain plug? The extra oil capacity and cooling would be nice. A drain would make servicing a easy task too when changing the internal filter/screen.

Are these trans the same as the old 7004R's, but now computer controled?

Do the plug in trans modules work well too? These I see usually have a normal, towing, street, strip modes which change with a flip of a switch.

Anyother thoughts on increasing trans life?

Thanks and I am adicted to this site - all the excellent mods!!!!!

I installed one on my 56 chevy, and it really wasn't worth it. It always leaked and running the trans lines was a pain. I rebuild transmissions for a living and personally don't like to see anything installed in the cooling lines that can cause a restriction, as this fluid is used to lubricate the planetaries and clutches. A aux cooler will help. I think it is more important to change the filter in the pan on a regular basis. The only thing a remote filter will do is filter the oil coming out of the converter which was just filtered before entering the pump. Debris from the converter is not a problem on these units as it uses a extremly durable friction material.
These transmissions already have deep pan on them with a drain plug. They are about an inch deeper than pre-98 transmissions. The drain plug can be very difficult to get loose, I see a ton of these with the head of the bolt rounded off.
I plan on servicing my transmission every 20-25 thousand and use a bottle of Lubegard. This is the ONLY additive I would recommend.
Yes these trans are a fully computer controlled version of the 700r4.
I don't have any experience with the trans modules, but think all they do is raise line pressure.

Thank you Mike56BA!! (y)

Where is LUBEGARD avial? What does it do? I have always shy'd away from additives, especially in autotrans as to me these decrease friction and thus would cause the clutches and bands to glaze over.

Do you recommend flushing in your noted servicing or just renew the filter and replace the drained sump fluid?

Again, thankyou for the information.

Here's a link to the web pagehttp://www.lubegard.com/automotive/trans_atf.html I believe its available to the general public through NAPA auto parts stores. There are a lot of additives that can do some nasty things to a trans, from rusting all the metal parts to swollen seals and even melted plastic.
There has been some debate over a full flush or just changing the fluid in the pan. I've seen many complaints of tranny problems after they have been flushed. But this maybe because they waited to long to service it, or they thought a service would correct an already existing problem. I'am going to just do a pan drop and filter.
