Remove Fuse - antitheft measure

Anyone have a suggestion as to which fuse or rely you should pull out as an anti theft measure when leaving your Avalanche for a long period of time in a parking lot? I'd like to pull something that only relates to starting the truck. Any details are appreciated.

Fuel pump relay from under hood. Better solution is to replace a good fuse in ignition or fuel circuits with a bad one ;)

In the old days, people would just remove their coil wire, or put in a bad coil wire. That's even better! >:D Thieves don't have time to troubleshoot. Plus, even if they wanted to, once they opened the hood, a crowd would gather, just to see if they could help.

I know some people would take their battery out altogether, but that was on older non-computerized cars. You don't want to do that on a newer vehicle.

If you think about it a while, there are probably a number of ways to disable a vehicle for thieves. The trouble is, when they arrive with a flatbed. We've all seen the repo guy in action on those documentaries. Those guys are lightening quick! I've seen them in action a couple of times locally too. So, the thieves probably have that one down to a science too. And don't think parking it a special way will help too much. I saw one repo guy drag a car out sideways, screaching tires and all.

I park the truck for a number of days in a remote location with a trailer attached. 'm not to concerned about being floated away as the trailer will make it more difficult. My real concern is someone driving it away. I'd like to find a process that is simple for me, yet might make it harder for a thief. Where I am, the thiefs will not be pros. You can email me privately if you don't want to post publically. Thanks.

Anymore suggestions? Thanks.

If you don't anticipate truly technical thieves, pull the fuel pump relay.

Fuses can be defeated easily, pulling another and jamming it in, rigging a homemade fuse, etc. Relays are tougher. Or just place a blown fuse in place of a critical one, that's MUCH tougher.

You can identify the relays in the engine compartment fuse box. Two control your injectors, one controls the starter, one for the fuel relay, one for the ignition control.

I like these ideas...a lot less money and I think as effective as very high zoot alarms...I especially like the post referring to the placement of "blown fuses"...

Great ideas. I appreciate the input. Nothing worse than coming back to find my AV missing. Thanks gang.

I've heard of the coil wire removal but I think someone already mentioned this. I have to give this some thought because I plan on leaving my AV for about two weeks in a parking garage when I go on vacation. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I know this feeling first hand :6: :6: :6:. It really sucks.

Sometime about 2 months ago, someone posted a similar note about putting a hidden switch under the dash. The switch broke the circuit to the brake pedal switch, which apparently prevents the car from being taken out of park. (I believe you do have to have your foot on the brake to get out of park) You could just as easily put a switch in line with another critical circuit that would keep the car from starting in the first place.

Pull the "ingition 0" fuse from the side of the instrument panel. Disables the PCM and TCM. I too like the idea of replacing it with a blown fuse when leaving unattended for a long time.

FYI: For you 4x4 owners who Flat Tow (a.k.a. Dinghy Towing) behind an RV or bus, this is the same fuse Chevrolet recommends pulling. It prevents the odometer to run up the miles even if the transfer case is in neutral and the engine is off.

That brake switch thing can be? tricked too, if you try with your key you can turn it partly on and take the truck into neutral then start it up there all without touching the brake. And as for pulling fuses and relays, this can lead to problems, they new fuse blocks have very high tension terminals, you notice how hard they are to remove the first time, they have a life span of removing them only 4 times and they lose their clamping force and could start to get loose intermintantly causing you problems, I think you can splice into the fuse pump wiring and go inside the cab with a switch or fuse hiddin inside the console or somewher else, if the theives see a switch or fuseholder they will just think its for aftermarket accessories. This is what I have done in the past anyhow........You can also put your vehicle in 4WD to help prevent someone with a set of wheel snatchers to pick up the back of your truck and drive away with it, they would need to jack it up, put dolllys under the front wheels, then jack the back and tow it that way, it will slow them down anyhow.....

This is an old topic as far as responding to Gibby's post, but for the record:

IGN-0 is ACC Start & RUN and is the common to that "pole" of the ign sw which is wired for that combination. Although it may be a good fuse to fill the theft deterrent need, it's the same result as just having your ign sw in off or lock position for the Dinghy Towing.

Just disconnect the battery if for the towing need.
